The case of the Central Art Library in the Cape Town City Libraries illustrates the role of an art reference collection within a lending library. Such a collection should be wide ranging in scope, catering for the needs of students, professionals, and the general public, and must be built up by means of careful and informed selection, with the needs of the local community in mind. Representation of art worldwide should be complemented with documentation of the arts of the library’s own locality and nation. The Central Art Library’s reference section includes two student collections, and a number of special collections, including a collection devoted to African art, a comics collection, an image bank, and a collection of pamphlets and ephemera. Expanding the reference collection can be an effective strategy for serving the needs of the public despite a standstill or shrinking budget.

The Cserénfa experiment. On the attempt to install computers and Internet in a tiny village in Hungary Authors: György Lengyel, professor of sociology, Corvinus University of Budapest, Department of Sociology and Social Policy, [email protected] Eliza Eranusz, Ph.D. student, Corvinus University of Budapest Department of Sociology and Social Policy Dániel Füleki, junior research fellow, Corvinus University of Budapest Department of eBusiness László Lőrincz, Ph.D. student, Corvinus University of Budapest Department of Sociology and Social Policy Viktória Siklós, Ph.D. student, Corvinus University of Budapest Department of Sociology and Social Policy Abstract The research aimed at studying social impacts of network-based and organized IT-learning in a local community. At the beginning of the project courses were organized, then computers and Internet accesses were made available for families, and we asked them to provide help for others on a voluntary basis. The turnout of the village Telehouse (the public eAccess point) was monitored at the same time. Focus groups, interviews, computer generated documents and diaries of the participants were the major sources of the research. As for the primary impacts, by the end of the experiment IT knowledge and related aspirations increased although side effects, like envy and frustration also did occur. The Internet activity of the participants was predominated by recreation and not by information gathering or resource extension. As far as wider social aspects are concerned, at the beginning of the project villagers thought that people were reserved, mistrustful and unprepared to help, and this mood did not change much to the end. While children learn basic IT skills in the elementary school adults are worse off in this respect. Therefore organizing courses for them was popular and proved to be useful. Another policy result is that outplacing to networks and the Telehouse satisfy more or less the same potential demand thus it is not advisable to apply both of them in a small settlement. The abundant papyrological evidence surviving from late antique Egypt (4–8th c.) includes thousands of documents in Greek and Coptic on village life. These sources shed light on aspects of rural realities barely known from other areas of the ancient Mediterranean. Village administration and government are especially well documented. Late antique villages in Egypt were organised in a fiscal community (koinon) which was collectively liable for the payments of the taxes incumbent on the village and the cultivation of their land. This institution was governed by a body of officials consisting of members of the village elite. This chapter discusses the relationship of the fiscal village community, administration and elite in Byzantine and early Islamic Egypt.

AbstractJournalists and scholars have long observed how Aldeburgh seems to function as a larger stage for Benjamin Britten’s village-themed operas. Not only is it the explicit setting forPeter Grimes, but it also serves as the site for the annual Aldeburgh Festival of Music and the Arts, founded by Britten in 1948. This article examines how the Festival served as a parallel construction of the village life seen in Britten’s early operas, particularlyAlbert Herring(1947) andLittle Sweep(1949). Analysing materials from the initial years of the Festival – including programme books and accounts of exhibitions and performances – I trace how Festival organisers drew upon the rhetoric and modes of behaviour of contemporary tourism in promoting a particular vision of the local community. By blurring the line between the fictional worlds of Britten’s village-themed operas and the site of Aldeburgh, the Festival encouraged the visitors to fabricate the very kind of community that organisers claimed could already be found at Aldeburgh.
