The article presents materials of a comparative study between index estimates of the physical development of students between two ethnic groups. Physical development is one of the most important indicators of the health not only for the young generation, but also for the whole population. The indices of physical development represent the ratios of individual anthropometric characteristics, which allows them to be used for a rough assessment of physical development in the course of mass surveys of the population, as well as for analyzing the influence of various environmental factors on the body. The study involved 336 girls aged 17 to 20 years studying at Kostanay State Pedagogical University. The studies were conducted in accordance with bioethical rules. All studies were conducted in inter-sessional period, in the first half of the day. Depending on nationality, the respondents were divided into two groups: the first group — students of Kazakh nationality, the second group — students of Slavic nationalities. The studied groups identified the main anthropometric (heihth, body weight, chest circumference), physiometric parameters (vital capacity of the lungs, hand strength, blood pressure), anthropometric (Quetelet, Pigne, Manouvrier) and functional indices (Robinson, Skibinsky, life and dynamometric indices). In the studied groups, significant differences were revealed in the main anthropometric indicators, the characteristics of the Manouvrier index, and the index of life. The revealed excess of the average group indicators of the girl students of the second group is due to the genetic predisposition of the morphological and functional characteristics of the organism.

The change in living conditions and the intensity of the educational process affect the health of students, so it is required that the standards and standards of physical development should be regularly updated. 2439 students including 1107 boys and 1432 girls from four Universities of Ufa were involved in the survey. It is provided a representative sample of the volume using the correlation method and it is allowed developing table-standards for assessing the physical development of students. The correlation dependence of the average degree between body length and body weight was established (the value of the correlation coefficient varies from 0.32 to 0.59 among boys and from 0.3 to 0.51 among girls). The correlation mainly averages between height and chest circumference among boys aged 18 years (r =0.52), 20 years (r =0.45); and among girls - at the age of 17 (r =0.32), 22 (r =0.32). Out of the total number of tested cases, average physical development of male students was 68.45% and 68.82% in female students; 13.33% of male students and 13.13% of female students showed this index below average; 14.85% of male students and 13.29% of female students had this index above average; low physical development was observed in 1.85% of male students and 3.3% of female students; high physical development could be found among 1.52% of male students and 1.46% of female students. Analysis of the body mass index of the tested students indicates 76.0% of boys and 68.84% of girls to be characterized as having a physiologically normal state, excess body weight is observed in 10.5% of boys and 4.82% of girls (p<0.05). Regional approaches to the study of physical development are justified from the standpoint of expanding the all-Russian system of monitoring the state of physical development of students, planning recreational activities in the activities of higher education institutions, regional and municipal health systems and education; individualization of the process of physical education; construction of state programs in the field of youth political and sports.

Full-fledged balanced nutrition is the main factor in the formation of children's health, when the processes of growth and development are most intense in the body, many organs and systems are formed and mature, and their functions are improved. The article presents the main research areas of foreign and domestic scientists on the treatment of genetic diseases, such as phenylketonuria. One of the priority areas in the field of healthy nutrition of the Russian population in accordance with the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation until 2030 is the development of the production of food products enriched with essential ingredients, specialized children's food products, functional products, dietary food products and biologically active additives. According to WHO, the health and physical development of children and adolescents depends on the nutritional structure by 70%. Phenylketonuria (PKN) - an inherited disease that causes impaired metabolism of the amino acid phenylalanine in a child - is one of the first recommended by WHO for early diagnosis in newborns. Lack of treatment causes serious damage to the central nervous system, a lag in mental and physical development. A feature of the modern stage of development of dietary therapy for children suffering from various diseases, including hereditary ones, is the development of quality functional food products that contribute to the preservation and improvement of the health of the child, due to the regulatory and normalizing effect on the body, taking into account its physiological state and age. These products can be widely used in the practice of therapeutic nutrition not only in the sastava of the hypophenylalanine diet, but also for any diseases requiring its observance. Currently, the only method of treating PKN is diet therapy, organized from the first days of life using specialized mixtures without phenylalanine. High-protein products of vegetable and animal origin are excluded from nutrition. The goal of the therapeutic effect of the diet on the child is to maintain the concentration of phenylalanine (FA) in the blood in the range of 2-12 mg per 100 ml, depending on the age of the child.

The health of students and their physical fitness are among the most important and urgent problems. Health depends to a large extent on the way of life, covering the entire complex of life processes and the entire area of human interaction with the environment. When studying the functional state of the body, the most important are the indicators of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, the assessment of the level of physical development, fitness, functional capabilities and deviations in health. Motor activity increases the adaptation of the human body to changing environmental conditions and improves all adaptive mechanisms. Decreased physical activity contributes to an increase in the number of disorders in the body, which entails the risk of mental and physical discomfort in students.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to establish the place of the printed book in the era of technological advancement with the assumption that the print media is facing imminent death in the face of readily available and convenient online information. Also the paper aims to assess how the development of new technologies have affected the production, circulation and readership of the printed book, especially among the young generation. Design/methodology/approach Explanatory study was used with closed-ended approach to collect data from 50 students of the Technical University of Kenya and 5 key informant interviews with selected book publishers in Nairobi. The uses and gratification theory was used to explore the knowledge-seeking behavior among the respondents. Findings Findings showed that more than 80% of the respondents preferred the internet to the printed book, which, according to them, has no future in the face of technological advancement. Book publishers, on the other hand, felt that the printed book has a bright future among specific audiences who are committed to it, and especially those in the rural areas who have no access to the internet. While they agreed that the internet has posed a major challenge to the sales and readership of the printed book significantly, it is helping in marketing the printed book as opposed to killing it. New bookshops in Nairobi and modern libraries in high schools, tertiary institutions and universities demonstrate that the printed book is not dying soon. Research limitations/implications The researcher experienced challenges in data collection as the respondents were busy preparing for final examinations and hence many of them were not willing to spare time to fill the questionnaire. To solve this, the researcher had to spend more time to collect data as opposed to if the students were free and ready to participate in the study without any pressure. Practical implications The findings can be used as a basis for further research to widen the scope that can help bring a wider perspective to the topic. The results can also inform policy guidelines on the topic and also contribute to the body of knowledge. Social implications The topic touches on social phenomena that are affecting a number of young people and their information-seeking habits in the era of digital revolution. The way the young generation seek and use information should be of interest not only to academic staff but also to policymakers. Originality/value The paper is original based on primary data that was collected by the researcher from the respondents. It is backed by secondary data to bridge the gap between theory and practice.

Introduction. The proposed publication consists of an introduction, texts of two biographical interviews and comments thereon. Both the conversations took place in Elista (2004, 2017) as part of the research project ‘Everyone Has One’s Own Siberia’ dedicated to the important period in the history of Kalmykia though not yet sufficiently explored by anthropologists and sociologists — the deportation of Kalmyks to Siberia (1943–1956) and related memories. Goals. The project seeks to show the daily survival practices of Kalmyks in Siberia. In the spontaneous biographical interviews focusing on the years of Kalmyk deportation, not only the facts cited are important — of which we would otherwise stay unaware but from the oral narratives — but also the introduced stories of inner life: feelings and thoughts of growing girls. Methods. The paper involves the use of textual analysis and the method of text deconstruction. Results. The transcribed texts show survival and adaptation strategies employed by the young generation of ‘special settlers’ in places of forced residence. For many Kalmyks of that generation, high school was a ‘glass ceiling’, a limitation in life choices. In the narrative of R. Ts. Azydova, we face a today unthinkable social package for KUTV students with children — this illustrates how the korenization policy for indigenous populations in the USSR worked, and provides insight into daily practices of pre-war Elista. The story of T. S. Kachanova especially clearly manifests the ‘language of trauma’, first of all, through the memory of the body, vocabulary of death and displays of laughter. The texts of the interviews shall be interesting to all researchers of Kalmyk deportation and the memory of that period.
