This study aimed to explore sustainable agricultural land management for Boro rice production through bio-slurry practice inBangladesh. Face to face interviews were used on bio-slurry user and non-user farmers in the selected areas of Mymensingh district. The nutritional values (Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) of the slurry and non-slurry based soil were analyzed in the Department of Soil Science laboratory, BAU. Descriptive statistics were used to estimate the benefit and cost of boro rice production based on slurry and non-slurry practice. Likert Score scaling and Fishbein model were used to evaluate social acceptability and perception of slurry practices. Two-t sample test also applied for significance the difference of N,P, K on slurry based and non-slurry based soil.. Sixty households were purposively selected and the data were covered on socioeconomic characteristics, consumer attitude, income, cost, returns of bio-slurry and non-slurry based crop. The cost of N, P, K was reduced due to slurry practices instead of chemical fertilizer practices. The total production cost of boro rice per acre for slurry and non-slurry practices were BDT 31,064 and BDT 34,877 respectively, The per acre net return of bio-slurry and non-slurry based rice production were BDT 6056 and BDT 425 respectively and BCR were 1.19 and 1.01, respectively. The bio-slurry practice is much convenient for sustainable land management because it is economic viable, socially accepted and finally, slurry based soil contains significantly better Phosphorus and Potassium compared to non-slurry based soil.

The North-West (NW) region of Bangladesh is pivotal for the country’s agricultural development, mainly in producing irrigated Boro rice. However, increasing cost of irrigation water, fertilizers, labour and other inputs, and the spatio-temporal variation in actual yield, market price and profitability of rice, have added uncertainty to the sustainability of Boro rice cultivation. In this study, we evaluated the productivity, profitability, and prospect of Boro rice production using comprehensive field data collected directly from 420 farmers’ fields over two consecutive seasons (2015–16 and 2016–17), across seven geographically distributed locations in the NW region. We also analyzed the risk and return trade of popular Boro rice cultivars using Monte-Carlo simulation. The results show that there were significant (p≤0.05) variations in rice yield between sites, irrigation pump-types, and rice varieties, with Hybrid rice and BRRI dhan29 producing highest yields (6.0–7.5 t/ha). Due to different pricing systems, the cost of irrigation water varied from site to site and from year to year, but always comprised the highest input cost (20–25% of total production). The total paid-out cost, gross benefit, and gross income of rice significantly (p≤0.05) differed between sites, type of irrigation pumps, rice varieties, transplanting dates, and two cropping years. The variations in observed yield and profitability reveal considerable scope to improve rice production systems. Market variation in the price of rice affected overall profitability significantly. Probability and risk analysis results show that Minikit and BRRI dhan29 are the most stable varieties for yield and profitability. Hybrid rice, which has the maximum attainable yield among the cultivated rice varieties, also has the risk of negative net income. Based on the analysis, we discussed ways to improve yield and profitability and the prospect of Boro rice cultivation in the region. The study provides valuable information for policy-makers to sustain irrigated rice cultivation in both the NW region and nationally.

The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant has raised questions about the accumulation of radionuclides in soils, the transfer in the foodchain and the possibility of continued restricted future land use. This paper summarizes what is generally understood about the application of agricultural countermeasures as a land management option to reduce the radionuclides transfer in the food chain and to facilitate the return of potentially affected soils to agricultural practices in areas impacted by a nuclear accident.

The problem of limited knowledge of partners about agreements or contracts in general, and in particular regarding the principle of good faith in business activities faced by business actors and company management, which generally consists of millennial youth, which can be said to be still lacking in understanding the principle of commitment well, as a guideline in carrying out the actions of a company, especially companies with legal entities, such as Limited Liability Companies, where PT Sarana PanganMadani, has established many partnerships, which of course must keep the relationship harmonious, sometimes the relationship is already running, due to limited knowledge, experience, there was a clash that would definitely hinder good relations, both parties, for example, at the beginning of the negotiation there was an agreement, which gave birth to a partnership to distribute the nine staples, but in its implementation, there were obstacles, which caused Due to the difference in prices, even though at the beginning of the negotiation the price was already agreed to, but there was a change, which was due to an increase in market prices or production prices, so that the price that was agreed upon earlier, of course changed, this change is a problem of misunderstanding between the two parties, according to Partners. PT Sarana PanganMadani, the company raised prices unilaterally, while from the PT stated that due to changes in market prices, this is one example which is a significant obstacle, resulting in inconsistencies in the development of partner businesses which are good business groups providing distribution of nine staples daily activities, as well as providing business capital to develop agricultural land, as well as services, ranging from basic materials to packaging ready to be marketed. In this community service program, the priority issue agreed upon by the PKM FH Unilak proposer together with his partner, PT Sarana PanganMadani, to be resolved is to provide understanding through legal counseling about the principles of good faith in cooperating with the business community. Thus, after the program is implemented, it is hoped that partners will gain a correct understanding and have knowledge of agreements or contracts in general, and in particular the principles of good faith in this partnership. The method that will be used in this community service is to use lectures that will be directly at the PT Sarana PanganMadani office.

Quantifying knowledge on agriculture can have many benefits to stakeholders. While many knowledge-based systems exist in modern days for farmers’ decision support, specific models are lacking on how knowledge traits can impact on agricultural production systems. This study employed modelling technique, supported by field data, to provide a clear understanding and quantifying how knowledge management in production practices can contribute to rice productivity in the environmentally stressed southwest Bangladesh. This research accounted for ‘Boro’ rice as the target crop and ‘BRRI dhan28’ as the test variety. The ‘B-M Model’ was developed following the principle and procedure from published literature, ‘brainstorming’ and data from field surveys. Three knowledge management traits (KMT) were defined and quantified as the inputs of the model. Those are: self-experience and observation (SEO), extension advisory services (EAS) and accessed information sources (AIS). The yield influencing process (YIP), the intermediate state variable of the model, was deduced by accounting for the two dominant agronomic practices, seedling age for transplanting and triple superphosphate (TSP) application. ‘Knowledge drives farmers’ practice change which in turn influences yield’ was composed as the theoretical framework of the ‘B-M Model’. The model performed strongly against an independently collected field data set. Across the 180 farmers’ data, the average relative rice yield (RRY) predicted by the model (0.705) and observed in the field (0.716) was close (root mean squared deviation (RMSD) = 0.018). The difference between predicted and observed RRY was not statistically different (LSD = 0.03), indicating the model fully captured the field data. A regression of predicted and observed RRY explained 96% variance in observation, further proving the model’s strength in estimating RRY in a wider range of farmers’ rice yield. In a normative analysis, the practicality and usefulness of the model to stakeholders were simulated for the understanding of how much achievable yield could be expected by changing farmers’ knowledge pool (the sum of three KMT) on rice production practices, and at what combination(s) of KMT to be considered at strategic hierarchy to materialize a targeted achievable yield. To the best of the knowledge, a model quantifying rice yield in relation to knowledge management trait does not exist in literature. Upon successful testing under diverse yield scenarios using multiple and sophisticated statistical tools that enhanced the credibility of the model, it is concluded that the model has the potential to be used for identifying quantitative pathways of farmers’ knowledge acquisition for practice change leading to improved productivity of rice in the southwest region of Bangladesh.

The land is an important factor for people whose lives depend on the agricultural sector. The need for land for various uses has resulted in decreasing agricultural land which could have implications for decreasing food production. Alternative options which are expected to increase the potential for food production are the utilization of marginal land. Farmers with marginal land need to manage their production to meet household needs. So it is important to examine the marketable surplus, the level of commercialization, and the carrying capacity of marginal land. The research area was taken by purposive sampling method in Gunungkidul Yogyakarta. The samples taken were upland rice farmer households with the simple random sampling method. The marketable surplus analysis uses a marketable surplus formula, then the percentage is used to determine the level of farm commercialization. The carrying capacity analysis is carried out using the carrying capacity formula. The results showed that farmer households manage rice production by allocating an average of 59.1% for marketed and 40.9% for household consumption. The allocation of marketable surplus is greater than for household consumption, this shows that gogo rice farming households are towards commercially. The marginal land carrying capacity of 0.641 indicates that the land cannot be developed in an expansive and exploratory manner. The implication is in increasing upland rice production on marginal land, namely by an intensification of farming.
