This study aims to assess the comparative effects of vitamin C supplementation on lipid profiles in male and female human subjects. A total of 60 healthy individuals (male and female) were selected randomly, instructed and given the understanding of the purpose of study. The test group comprising 30 individuals were given 500mg vitamin C tablets one daily for 30 days and control group of 30 individuals were given placebo capsules(glucose 500mg) one daily for 30 days. Fasting blood samples were collected in the morning for estimation of cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C and VLDL-C on first day of the commencement of the study and second blood samples were taken after thirty days of supplementation and same estimations were carried out. Vitamin C caused reduction in serum total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol significantly but it did not have any statistically significant effect on HDL-C, VLDL-C and triglycerides. As far as gender is concerned the effect of vitamin C on lipid profile in males was not significantly different from those in females.© 2012 JSR Publications. This study was designed to investigate the effect of vitamin C inalleviating the changes in lipid profile and the atherosclerotic lesions inducedexperimentally by (0.5%) H2O2 in drinking water. Twenty four adult malesrabbits were divided randomly into four equal (a control and 3 treated "T")groups for 19 weeks: 1- The Control group: Which was given normal drinkingwater. 2- Group (T1): was given 0.5% H 2O2 in drinking water. 3- Group(T2): which was handled as T1, in addition to vitamin C (100 mg /kg/day) alongthe experiment. 4- Group (T3): was treated as T1 till the atherosclerotic lesionswere established at the week 13, then the animals received 100 mg/kg of vitaminC daily for 6 weeks. Blood samples were taken at the weeks 5, 13, 16 and 19 ofthe experimental period to measure the levels of total cholesterol (TC),triglycerid (TG), HDL-C, LDL-C and VLDL-C in plasma. Samples of aortictissue were taken to study the histopatholpgical changes. The results showed thatH2O2 caused an increase in TC, TG, LDL, VLDL-C and a decrease in HDL-Cconcentration in plasma. The histopathological sections showed lesions ofatherosclerosis in the aorta as fatty streaks and foam cells. Moreover, resultsshowed that treatment with vitamin C caused a dereased in the VLDL-C, LDLC,TG and TC levels and an increase in the HDL-C concentration in plasma. andregression of atherosclerotic lesions. Results of the present study suggest that theoxidative stress (produced by 0.5% H2O2) has an important role in pathogenesisof atherosclerosis in the rabbits and vitamin C has an important effect inreducing and preventing some of the oxidative stress changes in lipid profile andatherosclerotic lesions of the aorta. It is worthed to report that this is the firststudy undertaken in using vitamin C as an antioxidant to minimize the oxidativestress effects of H2O2 in rabbits as a model for atherosclerosis in mammals.

The adipocyte‐derived hormones leptin is known to increase in obesity and related disease. Thirty two non‐trained males (39±4.32 years, 176.5 – 6.5 ± 6.42 cm, and 31 ± 3.14 body fat %) were matched according to physical fitness enrolled in this study and divided to exercise and control group by accidentally. The participants of exercise group were completed an aerobic exercise program for 3 months (3 days/weekly) and control group were barred of exercise in this period. Anthropometrical measurements and fasting blood samples were obtained before and after interventions in two groups. Blood samples were collected in order to measuring serum leptin, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL). Pre‐ and post exercise independent variables were compared using a paired‐samples t‐test. Compared to pre‐training, the leptin levels decreased significantly (P<0.01) after aerobic exercise program in exercise group but not in the control subjects. Triglyceride concentration was decreased with exercise training whereas concentrations of LDL cholesterol did not change in exercise group (p≥0.05). Exercise training resulted in significant decrease in anthropometrical indexes (p Ë‚ 0.05) and a borderline significant increase in HDL (p=0.052). TG/HDL ratio were significantly decreased in exercise group by exercise training (p=0.028). All variable in control group remained no change in control group (p ≥ 0.05). These data suggest, despite lack significant changes in some lipid profile markers, aerobic exercise program can be improve systemic inflammation and TG/HDL ratio as a cardiovascular risk factor in obese subjects.

The present study was designed to investigate the effects of VêO® premium and vitamin C (Vit. C) supplementation on lipid profile before and during pregnancy in local Iraqi ewes during heat stress. The study was conducted in a private field in Fallujah city, west Iraq, during the period from 6/8/2019 to 8/2/2020. Twenty local Iraqi ewes were divided randomly into four equal groups (5 for each group) The first group (T1) was given VêO® premium (4 g/ ewe/ day), the second group (T2) was given VêO® premium (2 g/ ewe/ day), and the third group (T3) was given Vit. C (40 mg/ ewe/ day), and the fourth group (T4) was left without treatment, as a control group. After 14 days of treatment, vaginal sponges were inserted for 14 days and, after their withdrawal, the rams were introduced for 6 days. Blood samples were collected from the jugular vein into vacutainer tubes (10 ml) at 4 periods (periods 1 and 2 before pregnancy; periods 3 and 4 during pregnancy). Lipid profile parameters were also estimated, which includes cholesterol, triglyceride, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and malondialdehyde (MDA). There were no significant difference in the serum levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, and LDL among the various treatments before and during pregnancy. The level of VLDL was significantly higher in T2 group as compared to the other treatments (P≤0.05) at the fourth periods. There was a significant difference in the level of MDA (P≤0.05) in treatment T3 in the first period compared with the treatments T1, T2, and T4, whereas treatment T4 showed significantly higher level (P≤0.05) in the second, third, and fourth periods as compared to treatments T1, T2, and T3. In conclusion, different effects of VêO® premium and Vitamin C supplementation were noticed on the lipid profile before and during pregnancy in local Iraqi ewes during heat stress.

Introduction: The role of virgin coconut oil in the treatment of allergic rhinitis is controversial. Thus, the aim of the present study is to determine the effects of virgin coconut oil ingestion, in addition to standard medications, on allergic rhinitis. We also studied the side effects of consumption of virgin coconut oil. Methods: Fifty two subjects were equally divided into test and control groups. All subjects received a daily dose of 10mg of loratadine for 28 days. The test group was given 10ml of virgin coconut oil three times a day in addition to loratadine. The symptoms of allergic rhinitis were scored at the beginning and end of the study. Results:, the symptom score were divided into nasal and non-nasal symptom scores. Sneezing score showed a significant difference, however the score was more in control group than test group, indicating that improvement in symptom was more in control group. The rest of the nasal symptom and non-nasal symptom score showed no significant difference between test and control groups. Approximately 58% of the test subjects developed side effects from consumption of virgin coconut oil, mainly gastrointestinal side effects. Conclusion: In the present study, ingestion of virgin coconut oil does not improve the overall and individual symptoms of allergic rhinitis, furthermore it has side effects.

Since the occurrence of swine salmonellosis has increased over time and control strategies other than biosecurity are highly recommended, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of vaccination with Salmonella Choleraesuis and Salmonella Typhimurium bacterins in pigs. Two experimental groups were formed: G1, animals immunized with two doses of a commercial vaccine (n = 20); G2, control group (n = 20). After vaccination, all pigs were orally challenged (D0) with 108 CFU of Salmonella Typhimurium and evaluated for 40 days. Every 10 days after D0, five piglets from each experimental group were euthanized and submitted to the necroscopic examination, when organ samples were collected. Blood samples and rectal swabs were collected before the first dose of the vaccine (D−42), before the second dose (D−21), before the challenge (D0), and thereafter, every three days until D39. Blood count, serum IgG measurement by ELISA, and the excretion of Salmonella Typhimurium in feces were evaluated. While the results from blood count and serum IgG concentration did not differ, the detection and excretion of Salmonella between G1 and G2 differed (p < 0.05). Therefore, it was observed that this vaccine partially protected the animals against experimental infection with Salmonella Typhimurium, reducing the excretion of bacteria in feces.

Background: Mangosteen and propolis extracts (MAEC) have been potential therapeutic agents known to exhibit powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical and immunological efficacy of MAEC as well as safety and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) on gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. Methods: This study was performed on 104 patients diagnosed with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis. At baseline, the participants were randomly allocated to either the test group, with daily intake of a single capsule containing 194 mg of MAEC for eight weeks, or control group, with placebo. Clinical periodontal evaluation and immunological parameters from saliva and gingival sulcular fluid were assessed at baseline, four, and eight weeks. Individual PROMs were assessed by OHIP-14 questionnaires. Results: There was a significant difference of modified gingival index at four and eight weeks between the test and control groups. In the test group, crevicular interleukin (IL)-6 was reduced, and the salivary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 was increased after eight weeks. PROMs were improved up to four weeks compared to placebo. Conclusion: Oral administration of MAEC would have a potential to reduce gingival inflammation clinically and immunologically in the patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.

Abstract Objectives Kalaf (Melasma) is an acquired facial hypermelanism. It has direct impact on patient’s quality of life and leads to development of various personality disorders. Lack of effective treatment and recurrences have drawn the attention of researcher to find alternative treatment. This study aimed to evaluate safety and efficacy of a topical Unani formulation in the management of melasma. Methods We conducted a prospective randomized controlled clinical study on the participants diagnosed with melasma. The participants (n=72) randomized into test (n=36) and control (n=36) groups. Sixty participants (n=30 in each group) completed the duration of therapy. The participants of the test group were treated with a classical Unani formulation and control group with hydroquinone 4%. The primary end point was change in mean MASI score and secondary end point was improvement in quality of life after eight weeks of treatment. Results The Unani formulation reduced 40.5% mean MASI score (17.31 ± 9.58 to 10.28 ± 5.92) in comparison to 32% reduction in mean MASI score (20.58 ± 9.49 to 13.92 ± 7.38) in the control group after eight weeks of treatment. When comparing with baseline the difference in MASI score was found statistically significant in both groups (p<0.05). On intergroup comparison, the change in MASI score between both groups was not statistically significant (p>0.05). In addition, MQOL and DQLI also improved significantly in both groups. Conclusions This study concluded that the Unani formulation and the control drug were equally effective and safer in the management of melasma.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of placing a resorbable collagen barrier in impeding the extrusion of obturation material in primary molars undergoing resorption. Study design: All the 94 canals in 47 mandibular molars were allocated to 2 groups- Group ‘A’- 47 canals with collagen barrier (Test group) and Group ‘B’- 47 canals without collagen barrier (Control group) based on randomization protocol. Pulpectomy was performed and obturation of both test and control canals were radiographically assessed. Pearson’s chi – square test was applied to analyze the results. The significance level was predetermined at p < 0.05. Results: Among the test group, 93.6% of the canals showed no extrusion while, 6.4% showed visible extrusion of the material outside the apex. In the control group, 83% showed no extrusion whereas 17% of the canals showed visible extrusion outside the apex. But no significant difference was noted (p>0.05). Conclusion: The placement of resorbable collagen barrier in the apical third of the canal prevented the extrusion of obturating material beyond the apex in resorbing primary molars.

Summary Objective: To evaluate the levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients heterozygous for hemoglobin variants and compare the results of this test with those of a control group. Method: This was an experimental study based on the comparison of HbA1c tests in two different populations, with a test group represented by individuals heterozygous for hemoglobin variants (AS and AC) and a control group consisting of people with electrophoretic profile AA. The two populations were required to meet the following inclusion criteria: Normal levels of fasting glucose, hemoglobin, urea and triglycerides, bilirubin > 20 mg/dL and non-use of acetylsalicylic acid. 50 heterozygous subjects and 50 controls were evaluated between August 2013 and May 2014. The comparison of HbA1c levels between heterozygous individuals and control subjects was performed based on standard deviation, mean and G-Test. Results: The study assessed a test group and a control group, both with 39 adults and 11 children. The mean among heterozygous adults for HbA1c was 5.0%, while the control group showed a rate of 5.74%. Heterozygous children presented mean HbA1c at 5.11%, while the controls were at 5.78%. G-Test yielded p=0.93 for children and p=0.89 for adults. Conclusion: Our study evaluated HbA1c using ion exchange chromatography resins, and the patients heterozygous for hemoglobin variants showed no significant difference from the control group.
