The current study aimed to screen the preliminary phytochemicals in the leaf extract of the medicinal plant Simarouba glauca and to analyze its potential antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer properties. The phytochemical profile of the methanol extract was analyzed, and bioactive compounds were identified using chromatography, FTIR and GCMS. Antimicrobial activity and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) were determined against 14 bacterial and 6 fungal strains. Moreover, the synergistic effect of a plant extract with commercially available antibiotics was also evaluated using the checkerboard method. The ethanolic and methanolic extracts showed exclusive activity against S. aureus and profound activity against E. coli and S. marcescens. Upon comparing breakpoints, methanolic extract demonstrated higher antimicrobial activity with a MIC value of 3.2 mg/mL against the test pathogens. Furthermore, the extracts demonstrated potential antioxidant activity; methanol extract had higher antioxidant potential compared to the ethanol extract. The major proactive bioactive compound with maximum antioxidant capacity was observed to be terpenoids. The methanol extract of S. glauca showed significant cytotoxicity against the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line with an IC50 value of 16.12 µg/mL. The overall results of our work provide significant evidence for the usage of methanolic extract of S. glauca as an efficient ethnomedicinal agent and a potential candidate for relieving many human ailments.

The complete halt in the synthesis of new effective antimicrobial compounds is a global concern. Pathogenic microorganisms' virulence mechanisms seem to have a significant impact on their pathogenesis. The purpose of this study was to examine the antimicrobial activity of the ethanol and methanol fractions of Pechuel-Loeschea leubnitziae leaf extract, as well as its effect on the expression level of virulence-associated genes.The extract's fractions were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Klebsiella pneumoniae (clinical), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans ATCC 90029. The test organism's antibiogram pattern was determined. The extracts' attenuation effect on the target genes of the susceptible organisms was investigated employing relative quantification using RT-qPCR. The test organism's antibiogram pattern revealed that it was drug-resistant, intermediate, and sensitive. The extracts tested positive for antimicrobial activity against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans ATCC 90029, with zones of inhibition varying from 20.33 to 29 mm. The lowest recorded MIC value was 4.688 mg/ml, while the highest was 37.5 mg/ml. In contrast to the methanol extract, the ethanol extract had a cidal action at a lower dose. The ethanol extract's Sub-MIC (18.25 mg/ml) merely reduced the expression of the hly gene in MRSA. The MRSA virulence genes were not suppressed by the sub-MIC of methanol extract (18.25 mg/ml). Notably, the expression of als1, pbl1, and sap1 in Candida albicans ATCC 90029 was significantly attenuated when exposed to sub-MICs of ethanol extract (2,344 mg/ml) and methanol extract (9.375 mg/ml). Per the findings of this research, the leaves of P. leubnitziae could be a source of an effective antimicrobial agent in the therapy of MRSA/Candida-related disorders.

<p><em>Bauhinia variegata</em> L (Synonyms: <em>Phanera variegata</em> Benth), commonly known as orchid tree or Kachnar belongs to the family of Leguminosae and found throughout India. All parts of the plants are used in the treatment of many ailments such as obesity, dyspepsia, bronchitis, leprosy, ulcer <em>etc.</em> The objective of the present study was to assess the i<em>n- vitro</em> antioxidant and anti-obesity properties of different solvent (hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, acetone, methanol and distilled water) extracts of <em>Bauhinia variegata</em>leaves. All the solvent extracts were found to contain different phytochemicals with bioactive properties at varying concentrations.The results of extraction showed that methanol was the suitable solvent for extraction of phytochemical as it recorded highest yield of 6.80%. The phytochemical assay results showed the highest polyphenol content in methanol extract (243 μg GAE/mg) and flavonoids content in chloroform extract (1.87 μg CE/g).The <em>in-vitro</em> antioxidant and anti obesity property was observed more in methanolic extract than the other extracts. The overall study suggests that <em>Bauhinia variegata</em>leaf extract could be a potential ingredient for the preparation of nutraceuticals to treat obesity and oxidative stress related complications. </p>

Bambusa arundinacea is a common bamboo species found in Andaman and Nicobar islands. There are over 1200 species of bamboo belonging to 75 genera which has been documented worldwide. Bamboo plants especially the leaves and shoots are known to have cyanogenic glycosides like taxiphyllin and amygdalin apart from vitamin C and other components. Immature bamboo shoots are consumed as vegetable in several asian countries. In the present study the crude extract of Bambusa arundinacea in various solvents was performed. Further preliminary phytochemical screening of the extract was done. Based the results of phytochemical screening, methanol extract was selected for further study. HPLC analysis was done confirm the presence of Amygdalin. GC-MS Analysis of methanol extract of B.arundinacea shows the presence of 40 compounds. The major compounds found in the methanol extracts based on the retension time were beta.-Sitosterol; 2-Methyl-7-phenylindole, 1-(Methylamino)anthraquinone, (R)-(-)-14-Methyl-8-hexadecyn-1-ol and 2-Ethylbutyric acid, nonadecyl ester. Antimicrobial activity of the extracts were tested using two Gram positive bacteria namely S. aureus and pneumonia and two Gram negative bacteria viz. Escherichia coli and Streptococcus mutant. The zone of inhibition was maximum in acetone and ethylacetate extracts while it was minimum for methanol extract. This might be due to the presence of taxiphyllin in the acetone and ethylacetate extract which are relatively non-polar as compared to methanol. To determine whether the inhibition of cell proliferation by methanolic extract from bamboo shoot was due to the induction of apoptosis, PC3 cell exposed to methanol extract were stained with acridine orange/ethidium bromide. The results show that at dose of 150 μg/mL, methanolic extract showed increased percentages of early apoptotic cells. Based on the results of the study, methanol extract of Bambusa arundinacea is a rich source of secondary metabolites, with presence of high levels of flavanoids and tannins. Presence of amygdalin in methanol extract is confirmed by HPLC analysis. Though the extract has a comparatively low antimicrobial activity yet the high anti-apoptotic activity of the extract coupled with a rich antioxidant ativity makes it an ideal candidate as a source of drug for cancer therapy.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the in vitro xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibiting activity of the methanolic leaf extract of the Rhusmysorensis.Methods: Uric acid is synthesized in the presence of XO which is an essential enzyme. Various concentrations of the leaf extract were taken. XO inhibiting activity was spectrophotometrically assayed. By increasing absorbance at 295 nm, the degree of enzyme spontaneity was determined.Results: Inhibition concentration 50 (IC50) of the methanolic extract of R. mysorensis leaves was 45.24±0.34 μg/ml, compared with IC50 value of the standard allopurinol of 7.8±1.28 μg/ml.Conclusion: Methanol extract of R. mysorensis can be used to treat hyperuricemia and gout after proper preclinical and clinical studies.

Multidrug resistance has increased globally in the communities. Bacterial infections associated with health care have weakened the existing antimicrobial therapy and demand the search for alternative therapies. In the present investigation, the medicinal plant Pulicaria gnaphalodes from Quetta, Pakistan, has been screened for antimicrobial potential. In vitro antimicrobial efficacy of P gnaphalodes extracts (methanol and ethanol) was quantitatively evaluated on the basis of zone of inhibition against different bacteria and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). In vivo, antihypercholesterolemic activity is determined in different rat groups. The results of the study indicated that the ethanol extract of P gnaphalodes showed maximum zone of inhibition for Bacillus subtilis of 12.1 ± 1.1 mm from all others. The methanol extract showed maximum zone of inhibition for Staphylococcus aureus of 11.9 ± 1.0 mm and rifampicin showed maximum zone of inhibition of 23.1 ± 0.9 mm. The results of ethanol and methanol extract of P gnaphalodes against different bacteria revealed that this plant has greater antimicrobial activity. However, the plant extract shows nonsignificant antihypercholesterolemic activity. The extract of this plant can be utilized as medicine to inhibit several infections caused by some bacterial pathogens found in human body.

Over the years, World Health Organization has recommended traditional medicines as safe remedies for ailments of both microbial and non-microbial origins. The use of herbals has increased worldwide in recent years, as they are believed to be safer than modern medicines with lesser or no side effects. The present study has been designed to determine the role of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis leaves extract in-vitro antifungal activities against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Candida glabrata species. The leaves of H. rosa-sinensis were soaked in methanol and ethanol for solvent extraction. The extraction yield was diluted in DMSO to obtain 6 different concentrations, and was then impregnated on blank discs. The disc diffusion method was used to test against 3 different candida species for sensitivity test. Basic phytochemical constituent’s detection on phenol, carbohydrate, tannins and saponins were done on H. rosa-sinensis. The extract that shows largest zone of inhibition of candida species is the leaf extract with ethanol. 1000mg/ml of the leaf extract shows the highest inhibition zone against C. albicans, C. tropicalis and C. glabrata which are 9mm, 8mm and 9mm respectively. Carbohydates test showed both extractions highly positive and ethanol extract exhibited the highest saponin compared with methanol extract. It was found that ethanol extract of H. rosa- sinensis showed more potent anti candidiasis compared with methanol extract.

The objective of the current study is represented by the determination of silica and a phytochemical screening of phenolic derivates of some Equisetum species. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity for Equisetum pratense Ehrh.,, Equisetum sylvaticum L. and Equisetum telmateia Ehrh. (sin. Equisetum maximum Lam.) were also investigated. The concentration of silicon (Si) in plants was determined by the spectrophotometric method using previous treatment with NaOH 50% both for the stem and the nodal branches [1]. Results obtained varied from 95.12 to 162.10 SiO2 mg/g dry plant which represents 4.44% to 7.58% Si/100g dry sample. Two types of total extracts were obtained using different solvents and were subjected to qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis considering total phenolic content [2]. The highest concentration of investigated compounds was found in the methanolic extract, E. sylvaticum, 196.5mg/g dry sample. Antioxidant activity was monitored spectrophotometrically and expressed in terms of IC50 (�g/mL) [3]. Values gathered ranged from 261.7 to 429.5 �g/mL. The highest capacity to neutralized DPPH radicals was found in E. sylvaticum. In vitro antimicrobial activity was determined using difusimetric method [4]. Testing was performed on four microorganisms: three strains of bacteria and one species of fungi. Different effects were noticed against the bacteria, furthermore the methanol extract appeared to be most efficient. All extracts showed significand antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Candida albicans (ATCC 90028) and weak to no activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922).

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the growth, structure, spectral, solubility and biological activity of sodium cadmium oxalate dehydrate (NaCdOx) and cadmium oxalate trihydrate (CdOx) crystals prepared by a single diffusion method in the silica gel medium.Methods: The present crystals were grown using single diffusion methods and tested for XRD, UV absorption (190 to 1100 mm) and solubility (distilled water at 20-29 °C) studies. The antimicrobial efficacy of the grown samples at various concentrations (25, 50, 75 and 100 μg/ml) was studied against Streptococcus, (G+Ve), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (G-Ve) and Candida albicans (antifungal). The cytotoxicity evolution was carried out against human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) using MTT assays.Results: The existing single crystals were successfully grown by silica gel technique. The solubility of sodium cadmium oxalate dehydrate (NaCdOx) was moderately good in deionized warm water. The FTIR spectral studies confirmed the chelating bands of the present samples and UV spectra showed the better the optical conductivity of as-grown crystals. The complexes showed good antimicrobial activity against all tested microbial strains and they exhibited a decrease in cytotoxicity activity.Conclusion: The gel method was suitable to grow metal complexes of legend crystals. The modification of structural properties of cadmium oxalate trihydrate (CdOx) by sodium doping was much improved the solubility, anticancer, antimicrobial activity and polarization by the high optical conductivity of sodium cadmium oxalate dehydrate (NaCdOx) compound. Hence sodium cadmium oxalate dehydrate (NaCdOx) might be a candidate for biomedical applications.

Objective: The main aim of the study was to screen the isolated compounds of Viburnum Punctatum for its in vitro anticancer activity and its percentage viability against HCT 15 (Human Colon Cancer Cells) Cell lines.Methods: Pet ether, Chloroform, Methanol and Aqueous extracts was prepared and assayed for the presence of phytochemicals. Two compounds were isolated from the methanol extract of Viburnum Punctatum by column chromatography such as ME1 (Quercetin) and ME2 (Kaemferol-3-glycoside) characterised by UV, IR, MS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The above isolated compounds were subjected to in vitro anticancer activity on HCT 15 cell lines was evaluated by Micro culture Tetrazolium (MTT) assay.Results: ME1 showed significant cytotoxic activity than the ME2 on HCT 15 cells with a percentage viability of 54.60 and 67.18 in the concentration of 10µg/ml and 50µg/ml respectively.Conclusion: On the basis of obtained results, ME1 and ME2 isolated from a methanolic extract of Viburnum Punctatum represent a new group of cytotoxic against HCT 15 Cell lines.
