As an advanced heat exchanger for aero-turbine applications, a tubular-type heat exchanger was developed. To ensure the optimum performance of the heat exchanger, it is necessary to assess the structural integrity of the tubes, considering the assembly processes such as brazing. In this study, fatigue tests at room temperature and 1000 K were performed for 0.135 mm-thick alloy 625 tubes (outer diameter of 1.5 mm), which were brazed to the grip of the fatigue specimen. The variability in fatigue life was investigated by analyzing the locations of the fatigue failure, fracture surfaces, and microstructures of the brazed joint and tube. At room temperature, the specimens failed near the brazed joint for high σmax values, while both brazed joint failure and tube side failure were observed for low σmax values. The largest variability in fatigue life under the same test conditions was found when one specimen failed in the brazed joint, while the other specimen failed in the middle of the tube. The specimen with brazed joint failure showed multiple crack initiations circumferentially near the surface of the filler metal layer and growth of cracks in the tube, resulting in a short fatigue life. At 1000 K, all the specimens exhibited failure in the middle of the tube. In this case, the short-life specimen showed crack initiation and growth along the grains with large through thickness in addition to multiple crack initiations at the carbides inside the tube. The results suggest that the variability in the fatigue life of the alloy 625 thin-tube brazed specimen is affected by the presence of the brazed joint, as well as the spatial distribution of the grain size and carbides.

In this paper, the stresses of plate-fin structures at the different operation parameters were analyzed in actual operation process of LNG plate-fin heat exchanger based on finite element method and thermal elastic theory. Stress characteristics of plate-fin structures were investigated at the different operation parameters of that. The results show that the structural failure of plate-fin structures is mainly induced by the maximum shear stress at the brazing filler metal layer between plate and fin while by the maximum normal stress in the region of brazed joint near the fin side. And a crack would initiate in brazed joint near the fin side. The maximum normal stress is also main factor to result in the structural failure of plate-fin structures at the different temperature difference (between Natural Gas (NG) and Mixture Refrigerant (MR)), MR temperature and NG pressure of LNG heat exchanger. At the same time, the peak stresses obviously increase as the temperature difference, MR temperature and NG pressure increase. These results will provide some constructive instructions in the safe operation of LNG plate-fin heat exchanger in a large-scale LNG cold-box.

Liquids pipelines undergo pressure cycling as part of normal operations. The source of these fluctuations can be complex, but can include line start-stop during normal pipeline operations, batch pigs by-passing pump stations, product injection or delivery, and unexpected line shut-down events. One of the factors that govern potential growth of flaws by pressure cycle induced fatigue is operational pressure cycles. The severity of these pressure cycles can affect both the need and timing for an integrity assessment. A Pressure Cycling Monitoring (PCM) program was initiated at Enbridge Pipelines Inc. (Enbridge) to monitor the Pressure Cycling Severity (PCS) change with time during line operations. The PCM program has many purposes, but primary focus is to ensure the continued validity of the integrity assessment interval and for early identification of notable changes in operations resulting in fatigue damage. In conducting the PCM program, an estimated fatigue life based on one month or one quarter period of operations is plotted on the PCM graph. The estimated fatigue life is obtained by conducting fatigue analysis using Paris Law equation, a flaw with dimensions proportional to the pipe wall thickness and the outer diameter, and the operating pressure data queried from Enbridge SCADA system. This standardized estimated fatigue life calculation is a measure of the PCS. Trends in PCS overtime can potentially indicate the crack threat susceptibility the integrity assessment interval should be updated. Two examples observed on pipeline segments within Enbridge pipeline system are provided that show the PCS change over time. Conclusions are drawn for the PCM program thereafter.

The most part of energy losses in power system such as fuel cells is due to the heat released by the exhaust gas to atmosphere. The exhaust gas consists of non-condensable gas and steam with sensible and latent heat. As a lot of latent heat is included in the exhaust gas, its recovery is very important to improve the power system efficiency. Based on the previous basic studies, a thermal hydraulic prediction method for latent heat recovery exchangers was proposed. For the condensation of steam on heat transfer tubes, the modified Sherwood number taking account of the mass absorption effect on the wall was used. Two kinds of compact heat exchanger with staggered banks of bare tubes of 10.5 or 4mm in outer diameter was designed with the prediction method. The more compactness was obtained with the smaller tubes at a designed heat recovery. The thermal hydraulic behavior in the compact heat exchangers was experimentally studied with air-steam mixture gas. In the parametric experiments varying the steam mass concentration, the temperature distributions of cooling water and mixture gas were measured. The experimental results agreed well with the prediction proposed in this study and the more compactness with the smaller tubes was proved.

This paper presents the results of tests conducted on the HR6W (23Cr-45Ni-6W-Nb-Ti-B) alloy under low-cycle fatigue at room temperature and at 650 °C. Fatigue tests were carried out at constant values of the total strain ranges. The alloy under low-cycle fatigue showed cyclic strengthening both at room temperature and at 650 °C. The degree of HR6W strengthening described by coefficient n’ was higher at higher temperatures. At the same time, its fatigue life Nf at room temperature was, depending on the range of total strain adopted in the tests, several times higher than observed at 650 °C.

A comprehensive comparison between electroslag surfacing (ESS) and submerged arc surfacing (SAS) using 30-mm-wide (1.2 in.) χ 0.5-mm-thick (0.020 in.) nickel alloy 625 strip was conducted in both the as-deposited and stress relieved (at 650°C [1200°F]) conditions. In most cases, exactly duplicate cladding conditions were used to best compare ESS with SAS. Nickel alloy 625 strip was deposited on 10-cm-thick (4 in.) flat plates and 64-cm-diameter (25 in.) shafting (both MIL-S-23284 Class 1 steel) using optimized ESS and SAS processes. Tension and face and side bend tests were performed on as-welded and stress-relieved cladding at room temperature. Microstructural analyses of the clad specimens were performed using optical and electron microscopy. Cladding parameters were found to affect the dilution, deposition rate, and penetration. Although ESS and SAS cladding possessed similar strength levels, the cladding deposited by ESS was shown to have greater ductility than that by SAS. Also, the resistance to solidification cracking of cladding by ESS was superior to SAS because of the reduced silicon, carbon, oxygen, and impurity levels which promote interdendritic Laves phase, niobium-rich MC carbides and inclusions. Compared with SAS, the ESS method proved to be not only more metallurgically favorable but also cost-effective.

A high pressure material testing system (max. pressure: 140 MPa, temperature range: −80 ∼ 90 °C) was developed to investigate the testing method of material compatibility for high pressure gaseous hydrogen. In this study, SSRT and fatigue life test of JIS SUS304 and SUS316 austenitic stainless steel were performed in high pressure gaseous hydrogen at room temperature, −45, and −80 °C. These testing results were compared with those in laboratory air atmosphere at the same test temperature range. The SSRT tests were performed at a strain rate of 5 × 10−5 s−1 in 105 MPa hydrogen gas, and nominal stress-strain curves were obtained. The 0.2% offset yield strength (Ys) did not show remarkable difference between in hydrogen gas and in laboratory air atmosphere for SUS304 and SUS316. Total elongation after fracture (El) in hydrogen gas at −45 and −80 °C were approximately 15 % for SUS304 and 20% for SUS316. In the case of fatigue life tests, a smooth surface round bar test specimen with a diameter of 7 mm was used at a frequency of 1, 0.1, and 0.01 Hz under stress rate of R = −1 (tension-compression) in 100 MPa hydrogen gas. It can be seen that the fatigue life test results of SUS304 and SUS316 showed same tendency. The fatigue limit at room temperature in 100 MPa hydrogen gas was comparable with that in laboratory air. The room temperature fatigue life in high pressure hydrogen gas appeared to be the more severe condition compared to the fatigue life at low temperature. The normalized stress amplitude (σa / Ts) at the fatigue limit was 0.37 to 0.39 for SUS304 and SUS316 austenitic stainless steels, respectively.

Fatigue life equations for carbon & low-alloy steels and also austenitic stainless steels are proposed as a function of their tensile strength based on large number of fatigue data tested in air at RT to high temperature. The proposed equations give a very good estimation of fatigue life for the steels of varying tensile strength. These results indicate that the current design fatigue curves may be overly conservative at the tensile strength level of 550 MPa for carbon & low-alloy steels. As for austenitic stainless steels, the proposed fatigue life equation is applicable at room temperature to 430 °C and gives more accurate prediction compared to the previously proposed equation which is not function of temperature and tensile strength.

Hot section components in high performance aircraft and rocket engines are increasingly being made of single crystal nickel superalloys such as PWA1480, PWA1484, CMSX-4 and Rene N-4 as these materials provide superior creep, stress rupture, melt resistance and thermomechanical fatigue capabilities over their polycrystalline counterparts. Fatigue failures in PWA1480 single crystal nickel-base superalloy turbine blades used in the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) fuel turbopump are discussed. During testing many turbine blades experienced Stage II non-crystallographic fatigue cracks with multiple origins at the core leading edge radius and extending down the airfoil span along the core surface. The longer cracks transitioned from stage II fatigue to crystallographic stage I fatigue propagation, on octahedral planes. An investigation of crack depths on the population of blades as a function of secondary crystallographic orientation (β) revealed that for β = 45+/- 15 degrees tip cracks arrested after some growth or did not initiate at all. Finite element analysis of stress response at the blade tip, as a function of primary and secondary crystal orientation, revealed that there are preferential β orientations for which crack growth is minimized at the blade tip. To assess blade fatigue life and durability extensive testing of uniaxial single crystal specimens with different orientations has been tested over a wide temperature range in air and hydrogen. A detailed analysis of the experimentally determined Low Cycle Fatigue (LCF) properties for PWA1480 and SC 7-14-6 single crystal materials as a function of specimen crystallographic orientation is presented at high temperature (75 F – 1800 F) in high-pressure hydrogen and air. Fatigue failure parameters are investigated for LCF data of single crystal material based on the shear stress amplitudes on the 24 octahedral and 6 cube slip systems for FCC single crystals. The max shear stress amplitude [Δτmax] on the slip planes reduces the scatter in the LCF data and is found to be a good fatigue damage parameter, especially at elevated temperatures. The parameter Δτmax did not characterize the room temperature LCF data in high-pressure hydrogen well because of the noncrystallographic eutectic failure mechanism activated by hydrogen at room temperature. Fatigue life equations are developed for various temperature ranges and environmental conditions based on power-law curve fits of the failure parameter with LCF test data. These curve fits can be used for assessing blade fatigue life.

We demonstrated a flash memory device with chemical-vapor-deposited graphene as a charge trapping layer. It was found that the average RMS roughness of block oxide on graphene storage layer can be significantly reduced from 5.9 nm to 0.5 nm by inserting a seed metal layer, which was verified by AFM measurements. The memory window is 5.6 V for a dual sweep of ±12 V at room temperature. Moreover, a reduced hysteresis at the low temperature was observed, indicative of water molecules or −OH groups between graphene and dielectric playing an important role in memory windows.

This study carried out burst tests on steam generator (SG) tube specimens containing multiple axial part-through-wall (PTW) flaws at room temperature (RT). The specimens were machined from SG tube of Alloy 690TT with an outer diameter of 19.05mm and a thickness of 1.067mm. The flaws were made by electro-discharge machining (EDM) method on the outer surface of specimen. In the experiment, six types of multiple PTW flaws with a constant depth of 50% of wall thickness and single flaw with four different lengths were considered. The results showed that the interaction effect for collinear axial PTW flaws diminished with increasing ligament length between flaws. The ligament length had less influence on the interaction effect for longer flaws than shorter flaws. For non-aligned axial PTW flaws, however, the interaction effect was increased and remained with increase in circumferential ligament length. For parallel axial PTW flaws, the positive interaction effect appeared when the ligament between flaws was less than 2mm. However, the failure pressure decreased with increasing circumferential ligament length between flaws and reached the minimum when they were separated by about 90-degree in circumferential direction. Interaction effect was enhanced as number of flaws for collinear and non-aligned axial PTW flaws increased. Regardless of flaw configurations and ligament lengths, multiple PTW flaws of shorter length were failed by rupture at bottom of flaws followed by coalescence and unstable tearing. But, the flaws of length longer than 25.4mm were failed by rupture at bottom of one of multiple axial flaws.
