Academic motivation can work both ways. It inspires students as well as instructors at all levels of learning. However, this study gears toward motivation at the college level. When instructors cannot accomplish learning outcomes and observe students dropping the course, come late, miss lectures. and even scheduled tests or exams, these reveal serious problems or challenges. These challenges as well lead to undesired consequences. If this recurs very often, it becomes a phenomenon that needs immediate remedies or solutions. Previous research has focused on many aspects of motivation, theories, definition. Research has reached empirical results that serve all levels of education at elementary, junior, high schools, or colleges. No doubt research in motivation produces answers to questions raised by researches or institutions that look forward to improving the academic environment for students so that students’ goals will achieve the intended outcomes. Therefore, if students’ motivation to learn is enacted, the whole teaching environment will go smoothly. However, when a lack of motivation ends up in failures no matter how teaching methods are easy to apply, the whole academic institution falls apart. Ultimately, students’ main concern becomes focused on getting grades but not on the love of the subject they study. Here motivation plays an important role in the academic life of students when they know why they join college. Unless they have a clear set of goals, and their study does not satisfy their goals, challenges start to appear for instructors teaching them. I keep telling my students, “There is no point in teaching you if you are not willing to learn. Neither can I pour knowledge into your brains.” Speaking of which I remind them of the English proverb: “you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.” This study provides remedies for students’ lack of motivation at our college. The results of the study were obtained via interviewing students, and observation of their behavior during classes.

New advanced technologies and subjects related to high level research in engineering are expected to be bridged to undergraduate teaching at various levels. Hence, innovative teaching is required to address new challenges. A rapid overview of current teaching methods is presented in this paper highlighting related issues. Problem based learning and enquiry based learning are still under investigations to be adapted to most engineering courses. It is expected that students would be able to take control of their own learning with a certain freedom, or, given the opportunity to solve engineering problems without prior knowledge of the subject. Innovative teaching methods have to be designed and established to enable clear knowledge transfer to students with continuous assessment of the learning outcomes over regular periods of teaching (e.g. every semester). This paper discusses, also, a number of challenges encountered in teaching engineering with an example.

BACKGROUND University teaching methods are changing, and in response to a classical teacher-centered approach, new methods continue to strengthen knowledge acquisition by involving students more actively in their learning, thus achieving greater motivation and commitment. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to analyze the degree of satisfaction of physiotherapy students who used a board game–based approach, as well as to compare the difference between traditional and gamification teaching methods and their influence on the final evaluation of these students. METHODS A comparative study was conducted. Participants were physiotherapy students who were enrolled in the subject of “physiotherapy in geriatric and adult psychomotricity” (n=59). They were divided into two groups (experimental [n=29] and control [n=30] groups) through convenience sampling. The experimental group received gamification lessons, where the students performed different tests adapted from Party&amp;Co, and the control group received traditional lessons. A total of 16 theoretical lessons were received in both groups. RESULTS The scores in the final examination of the subject were higher in the experimental group (mean 7.53, SD 0.95) than in the control group (mean 6.24, SD 1.34), showing a statistically significant difference between the two groups (<i>P</i>=.001). CONCLUSIONS Overall, the “Physiotherapy Party” game not only stimulated learning and motivated students, but also improved learning outcomes among participants, and the improvements were greater than those among students who received traditional teaching.
