A specific multi-tiered community-based system within urban Los Angeles can be used to create a particular cross cultural collaboration and leadership model. This chapter focuses on a case study where cross cultural aspects of collaboration and leadership exist and work together within a particular community. By analyzing the historical to present-day context of this community-based system, this chapter reveals a strong correlation with relevant theoretical framework and practice strategies from the interdisciplinary field of Negotiation, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding (NCRP). The system for collaborating across difference presented within this chapter alludes to the capacity of effectively creating optimal solutions for educational and other organizational community development. It makes a proposal how a combination of certain collaborative dynamics and aspects of the field of NCRP have the capacity to create effective means of support for students in the public school system

E-governance practices are going through a transitional phase in developing societies like India. However, several impediments restrict them from becoming an effective means of interaction between government and citizens. The present study is an attempt to comprehend the citizens’ attitude and their level of readiness to accept the e-governance practices in online service delivery in the state of Punjab in India. It is based on the field survey of various SUWIDHA Kendras (now called Sewa Kendras Type I) in Punjab, where a sample of 240 users was covered with the help of interview schedule and observations. One district from each of the three regions of Punjab was selected randomly: Tarn Taran of Majha, Sangrur of Malwa and Hoshiarpur of Doaba. The results of this study show that the usage of e-governance practices as a popular medium is seriously limited by the public attitude. The main reasons are deficient e-governance infrastructure and apathetic public due to lack of computer literacy/e-readiness. The study establishes that, in order to implement e-governance successfully, not only a developed infrastructure but also behavioural changes in citizenry are required in developing societies.

Abstract: When boarding schools are faced with community service, some of them are not willing to accept it. Survey of BPPM Maslakul Huda Islamic School, in collaboration with the P3M Jakarta concluded that three (25%) of the 12 pesantrens in Central Java do not receive community service. It is an irony, because pesantren was born and raised from the public. One of pesantrens that was born from community service is PP DawarBoyolali. PP Dawar proved that pesantren had a great contribution to the community. This study wanted to uncover the devotion PP Dawar to community, both in religious and economic empowerment, as well as the main reason of PP Dawar in performing community service. The method used in this study was a qualitative research method using case study design. Based on the research, it was found that PP Dawar was a community-based boarding school which had done community services by performing routine religious activities such as routine verses recitation, recitals of Qur’an for the orphans, and also serving  the demand of societies that need Islamic teachers and religion teachers graduating from PP. DawarBoyolali. PP Dawar also helped the economy of the surrounding communities, by providing cheap labors, helping traditional broom and cracker home industry, and organizing donations to 500 orphans. The ideas or thoughts underlying PP Dawar’sdevotion are a sense of sincerity, an implementation on the religious science, a spirit of self-reliance, and a promotion for PP Dawar Boyolali itself.

Considering the role of communication for the effectiveness of selective waste collection programs (SCP), the research aimed to analyze the communication process used among the actors involved in waste SCP. In order to achieve the objective, a county located in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, was used as the case study. In the research, diagrams of information transmission were created, based on the Shannon Weaver model and adapted by DeFleur, so that communication gaps in the explored SCP and possibilities for improvement were identified. Among the results obtained in the study, it was observed that there is a distance between population and the cooperative that impairs the interactivity between these actors; the current information is insufficient to reinforce behavior in the population, since they don’t take into account environmental, social and economic factors as a form of mobilization; and the most effective means of communication to the public (speakers on the trucks) is no longer used to publicize the program. Thus, the communication in the analyzed SCP still lacks improvements, since the study identified noises in the communication that lead to failures in the selective collection of the county in question.

Chapter 4 focuses on the 1948 International Dance Festival and the New York Golden Jubilee Celebration to investigate the cultural paradoxes surrounding international dance performance in the early Cold War years. Promotion of cross-cultural exchange and openness to difference took a nationalistic turn if the public reception and critical discourse surrounding the festival are any indication. The chapter reveals through this case study that by the late 1940s the promise of American globalism imagined at the conclusion of World War II had diminished under the strain of containment of communism, signaling a growing public anxiety about the threat of cultural outsiders and outside influences. The 1948 International Dance Festival highlights the shifting attitudes to American globalism and the redirection of national ideals regarding cultural pluralism, within the culture of containment.

Sustainability transition projects (STPs) employ specialist knowledge and learning to lever changes for the communities with which they engage. Research into these forms of organizations often focuses on engagement practices and their relative success or failure to facilitate local transitions toward sustainability. What has attracted comparatively less attention, however, is how STPs develop their own sense of expertise in this role as a broker of Mode-2 knowledge or their own understanding about what it is that they are doing in facilitating community-scale changes. Privileging an emphasis on language-in-use research in organizational theory, this study analyzed the transcriptions of facilitated action research (AR) meetings of a case study STP by applying text mining methods in conjunction with a thematic analysis, the latter exploring insights gained across themes of governance, delivery, networks, challenges, and learning. The findings from these analyses are discussed with reference to how the case study STP staff group construes their work in the domain of sustainability and the generation and acquisition of relevant knowledge and learning in this specialized subsector of community development.

This article examines the perceptions of local people concerning the potential of tourism to alleviate poverty and bring about community development in the Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe. In-depth interviews, direct observations, and informal conversations were used to collect data in the four districts of Manicaland where there were functional community-based tourism (CBT) projects. After establishing a poverty criterion, data were collected from 43 local poor people in the four districts of the case study area. The results show that tourism development in Manicaland brought about community development through social, economic, environmental and cultural benefits. The authors suggest that there are interrelationships between tourism, poverty alleviation and community development. They show these interrelationships through a tourism and community-development framework which they developed based upon the results of the various methods of data collection used in this study.
