The Marginalization and Exploitation of Women in Media Industry

The woman in media is still a face that symbolizes the field of popular culture and hypersexualized naked body, and it is most often presented in the media as a victim. In the last decade, the representation of women and the women`s movement in the media has managed to get some progress. In the media, we will not see Roma women, disabled women, we will not see poor women, because they are not topics that manage to sell media content. The only topic that sells newspapers is the topic of violence against women, first of all because it is a type of secondary victimization, where female identity through media content is again represented as ‘another', and through the identity of the victim. The dead or scorched female body and the continuum of violence satisfy the logic of market capital. The main areas that were highlighted in this research paper are the portrayal of women by the media, the marginalization of women in mass media, the image of women in media, the influence of media on the views of the gender, and the stereotypes of girls and women in the media.

This article explores cost-effective mass media technologies. The experience of the use of paid access to the media content of Belarus was studied, the author also made the forecast on its future functioning. The paper provides global media industry trends and focuses on the use of messagers to promote content and increase the target audience of mass media. The research used the methods of content analysis and a written survey. During the study the author revealed that the media economically oriented technologies help to make a profit through distribution of content and formation of a loyal mass media audience.

The news media are the most influential sources of information, ideas and opinion for most people around the world. Who appears in the news and who is left out, what is covered and what is not and how people and events are portrayed matter. Research has consistently shown that women are underrepresented in the news and that gender stereotypes are reinforced in and through the media. The 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action recognised the relationship between women and media as a major area of concern in achieving gender equality in contemporary societies. This article presents Nordic findings from the 2015 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), which is the largest and longest-running study on gender in the world’s media. The findings show that women account for only 1 in 5 of the people interviewed or reported on by Icelandic news media and that women’s overall presence in the news has declined compared to the last GMMP study in 2010. The proportion of women as news subjects is also considerably lower than in other Nordic countries. We argue that the number of women who are journalists, managers in the media industry and decision makers in society has increased, but this shift has not automatically changed the representation of women in the news, either in numbers or in their portrayal. This discrepancy indicates that the relationship between gender and the news media is complicated and needs to be approached from different perspectives.

This paper offers a film and cultural studies analysis of the Indonesian religious film Ayat-ayat Cinta. It examines the way in which the film represents Islam in the context of the globalisation of the media industry, the wider cultural transformation and religious context in Indonesia. This paper argues that the film Ayat-ayat Cinta represents “popular Islam”, which resulted from the interaction between the santri religious variants and the film industry, capitalism, market forces and popular culture in Indonesia. Santri religious variants in this film are rooted in traditionalist, fundamentalist, modernist, and liberal Islam in Indonesia, and those Islamic groups which have undergone a process of conformity with capitalism and popular culture. As a result, the representation of Islam in this film is pluralist, tolerant, and fashionable.

ABSTRACT – This article investigates the innovation in sports content production by ESPN Brasil over the last decade as it makes changes to its media ecosystem. Qualitative research is the chosen methodology for this paper. Three criteria were established based on theoretical-conceptual perspectives on innovation in journalism: contextualization, engagement, and digital technologies. The data was collected from semi-structured interviews with professionals related to the case under study. It appears that experiments in content production are not separate from other issues in the media industry, such as the crisis in business models and the need for strategic leadership for innovation. The uncontainable pursuit of innovation is just as risky as remaining stagnant, and innovation must be in line with the media company’s main goal. RESUMO – Este artigo investiga a implementação de inovações na produção de conteúdo esportivo feitas pela ESPN do Brasil, durante a última década, realizadas como reflexo das mudanças em seu ecossistema midiático. A abordagem metodológica é qualitativa e, com base em perspectivas teórico-conceituais sobre inovação no jornalismo, foram estabelecidos três critérios de análise: contextualização, engajamento e tecnologias digitais. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com profissionais relacionados ao caso estudado. Constata-se que as experimentações na produção de conteúdo não se isolam de outras questões da indústria de mídia, como a crise nos modelos de negócios e a necessidade de uma liderança estratégica para a inovação. A busca desenfreada pela inovação é tão arriscada quanto se manter estagnado e a inovação tem de ser conectada com o propósito da empresa de mídia. RESUMEN – Este artículo investiga la implementación de innovaciones en la producción de contenido deportivo realizadas por ESPN do Brasil, durante la última década. El enfoque metodológico es cualitativo y, basado en perspectivas teóricas y conceptuales sobre la innovación en el periodismo, se establecieron tres criterios de análisis: contextualización, engagement y tecnologías digitales. Los datos fueron recolectados a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas con profesionales relacionados con el caso estudiado. Parece que los experimentos en la producción de contenidos no están aislados de otros temas de la industria de los medios, como la crisis de los modelos de negocio y la necesidad de liderazgo estratégico para la innovación. La principal conclusión es que la búsqueda desesperada de innovación es a menudo tan arriesgada como permanecer estancada y que la innovación tiene que estar conectada con el propósito de los medios de comunicación.

In 1975, Fairfax News commemorated International Women’s Year by appointing Lorrie Graham as its first female cadet photographer. Women only joined the photographic staff of newspapers in significant numbers from the 1980s and were more likely to be employed on regional newspapers than the metropolitan dailies. This article draws on interviews with male and female press photographers collected for the National Library of Australia’s oral history programme. It provides an overview of the history of women press photographers in Australia, situating their working lives within an overtly masculine newspaper culture where gender inequity was entrenched. It also examines the gendered and evolving photographic representations of women in the Australian press, including those of women in positions of social and political leadership. Although women press photographers have achieved greater recognition in the 2000s, the transformation of the media industry has impacted the working practices and employment of press photographers.

Summary: The body of evidence suggests that there is a causal association between nonfictional media reporting of suicide (in newspapers, on television, and in books) and actual suicide, and that there may be one between fictional media portrayal (in film and television, in music, and in plays) and actual suicide. This finding has been explained by social learning theory. The majority of studies upon which this finding is based fall into the media “effects tradition,” which has been criticized for its positivist-like approach that fails to take into account of media content or the capacity of audiences to make meaning out of messages. A cultural studies approach that relies on discourse and frame analyses to explore meanings, and that qualitatively examines the multiple meanings that audiences give to media messages, could complement the effects tradition. Together, these approaches have the potential to clarify the notion of what constitutes responsible reporting of suicide, and to broaden the framework for evaluating media performance.

Media content as a didactic unit of educational process stipulates the necessity to develop additional abilities, media literacy, in particular. Media literacy is the basis of media competence. The specificity of the training course defines the choice of approaches to training: research training and electronic training.

<p>This paper aimed to discusses the activity of preaching (dakwah) as being part of the imaging world. The phenomenon is about dai as the advertisement representative from moslem fashion in media. The existence of media behind preaching makes it as a part of media industry. Therefore, consumerism appears as the excesses of capitalism intangible in a spectacle which no longer serves as a guide. This paper employs hyperreality theory of Jean Baudrillard to examine media constructions of reality beyond media. Media act as the bridge of communication in viewing the reality to bring the popular culture, consumerism, and consider it as significant image. We also compare the movement of preaching in media from uswah hasanah concept. However, the activity of preaching in the advancement of technology always faced with challenges, so its movement would be changing and should be adjusted without separated from the Islamic dakwah ethics. Therefore, dai as an actor in preaching does not be predominance by advertisement. Beside that, the important thing, that be supposed to give attention from dai and mad’u, is Islamic substantial not Islamic symbol.</p><p align="center"><strong>***</strong></p><p>Tulisan ini membahas tentang aktivitas dakwah yang menjadi bagian dari dunia pencitraan. Yakni tentang keberadaan dai sebagai agen atau bintang iklan sebuah busana muslim. Dengan adanya media yang berada di balik layar dakwah menjadikan dakwah bagian dari industri media. Sehingga tampak konsumerisme sebagai ekses kapitalisme yang berwujud pada tontonan yang tak lagi menjadi tuntunan. Teori hyperrealitas Jean Baudrillard digunakan untuk membaca konstruksi media terhadap realitas di luar media. Media mempunyai peran sebagai jembatan komunikasi dalam melihat realitas, sehingga mampu memunculkan budaya populer, sikap konsumerisme, dan menganggap penting citra. Di sini juga digunakan konsep uswah hasanah sebagai salah satu cara pandang terhadap fenomena dai media. Sebab bagaimanapun, aktivitas dakwah pada perkembangan teknologi sekarang ini selalu dihadapkan dengan berbagai perubahan, namun perubahan tersebut harus tetap disesuaikan dengan etika dakwah. Oleh karena itu, dai sebagai ujung tombak aktifitas dakwah jangan sampai didominasi oleh iklan. Selain itu juga diperlukan kesadaran baik dari dai ataupun mad’u agar tidak hanya mementingkan simbol Islam seperti formalisasi jilbab, tetapi juga memperhatikan substansi dari ajaran Islam. </p>

This chapter examines the effect of TV debates on political knowledge conditioned by the media context. We argue that TV debates take place in a wider media context and the extent of citizens’ learning processes about issue positions depends also on the informational context in general. We test four hypotheses: while the first three hypotheses concern the conditional impact of media issue coverage and debate content, the last hypothesis addresses the differences between incumbent and challenger. Using media content analyses and panel survey data, our results confirm the hypotheses that (1) when an issue is addressed in a TV debate, viewers tend to develop a perception of the parties’ positions on this issue, but (2) only if this issue has not been addressed extensively in the media beforehand. This learning effect about parties’ positions is bigger for the opposition party.

It is widely believed that the news media have a strong influence on defining what are the most important problems facing the country during election campaigns. Yet, recent research has pointed to several factors that may limit the mass media’s agenda-setting power. Linking news media content to rolling cross-section survey data, the chapter examines the role of three such limiting factors in the context of the 2009 and the 2013 German federal elections: (1) rapid memory decay on the part of voters, (2) advertising by the political parties, and (3) the fragmentation of the media landscape. The results show that the mass media may serve as a powerful agenda setter, but also demonstrate that the media’s influence is strictly limited by voters’ cognitive capacities and the structure of the campaign information environment.
