Aluminum-coated magnesiumcomposite plates were fabricated by clad-rolling, then diffusion annealingtreated at 200°C, 250°C, 300°C, 350°C for 1h . The mechanicalperformance of aluminum-coated magnesium composite plates was investigated bythe test of tensile behavior. The best tensile strength and elongation wasfound at 250°C, 148.3Mpa and 6.48%.The changesof microstructure were investigated by metallographic microscope and scanningelectronic microscope. It was found that theinterface intermetallic compounds generated great influence to the interface bondingperformance because of its brittleness andthickness.

In the past decade, natural fibre composites with thermoplastic matrices had attracted many composites manufactures for the superiority of lightweight and low-cost. A major challenge for natural fibre composites was to achieve high mechanical performance at a competitive price. Composites constructed from yarn and fabric structure preforms were better than composites made from random nonwoven mats. However, the twist structure of conventional ring spun yarns prevented the full utilization of fibre mechanical properties in the final composites. In this paper, the wrapped yarns were produced by wrap spun method with flax and polypropylene (PP), in which all flax fibres were twistless, then woven to be fabric preforms. The PP fibres served as a carrier for flax fibres during processing and became the polymer matrix in the final composites. The homogenous distribution of fibre and thermoplastic matrix in preforms could be achieved before hot pressing, so that not lead to impregnate difficultly, and prevented damage to the reinforced nature fibres during processing. Composites made from the wrapped yarn demonstrated significant tensile and peeling properties. The fabric structures (include plain, twill, and basket weave) and yarn tensile orientation (in 0°, 90°, 45°), had great influence on tensile strength and elongation of preforms. The cavity thickness of hot pressing mould had different influence on the tensile strength and peeling strength of thermoplastic composites, and the mechanical properties were superior when the thickness was 0.8-1.2 mm. The microstructure of thermoplastic composites showed uniform infiltration between layers, and had good bonding interface between flax fibre and PP matrix in composites.

Three dimensional (3D) warp interlock fabric becomes a promising structure due to its good mechanical performances. However, its complex manufacturing process can cause severe yarn damage and affects its overall final performances. The current study addressed the effects weaving process and warp yarn ratios on the multi-filaments yarn degradations and its mechanical performances while 3D warp interlock fabric manufacturing. Four different 3D warp interlock variants having similar fabric architecture, and yarn densities but different warp yarns interchange ratios were manufactured using 930dTex high-performance multi-filament (Twaron® f1000). The multi-filaments yarns at different weaving processes were tested for their tensile properties. The results show that the average tensile strength of twisted yarns show a decrement of 5.68% as compared to the bobbin yarns. Meanwhile, warping process also showed a 16.11% maximum breaking load reduction as compared to the bobbin yarn. Besides, the tensile strength of binding yarn after weaving process for samples 3D-8/0, 3D-8/4, and 3D-8/8 was reduced by 12.79%, 5.22%, and 14.22% respectively as compared to the yarn after warping process. In conclusion, yarn degradation inside the 3D woven structure was affected not only by the various process parameters but also by the type of fabric architecture made with different warp yarn ratios. These phenomena ultimately bring a great influence both on the yarn and overall mechanical performance of the final products. For this, further studies are planned to investigate the multi-filaments yarn degradation effect on the ballistic performances fibrous material as it is directly linked to the yarn performance.

Poly (lactic acid) or PLA was reinforced by nanocellulose and polyethylene glycol (PEG), which were introduced into PLA matrix from 0 to 3 wt.% to enhance compatibility and strength of the PLA. The nanocellulose was prepared by TEMPO-mediated oxidation from microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) powder and characterized by TEM, AFM, and XRD to reveal rod-like shaped nanocellulose with nanosized dimensions, high aspect ratio and high crystallinity. Films of nanocellulose/PEG/PLA nanocomposites were prepared by solvent casting method to evaluate the mechanical performance. It was found that the addition of PEG in nanocellulose-containing PLA films resulted in an increase in tensile modulus with only 1 wt% of PEG, where higher PEG concentrations negatively impacted the tensile strength. Furthermore, the tensile strength and modulus of nanocellulose/PEG/PLA nanocomposites were higher than the PLA/PEG composites due to the existence of nanocellulose chains. Visual traces of crazing were detailed to describe the deformation mechanism.

Abstract To avoid the formation of Ti-Ni intermetallics in a joint, three laser welding processes for Ti alloy–NiTi alloy joints were introduced. Sample A was formed while a laser acted at the Ti alloy–NiTi alloy interface, and the joint fractured along the weld centre line immediately after welding without filler metal. Sample B was formed while the laser acted on a Cu interlayer. The average tensile strength of sample B was 216 MPa. Sample C was formed while the laser acted 1.2 mm on the Ti alloy side. The one-pass welding process involved the creation of a joint with one fusion weld and one diffusion weld separated by the remaining unmelted Ti alloy. The mechanical performance of sample C was determined by the diffusion weld formed at the Ti alloy–NiTi alloy interface with a tensile strength of 256 MPa.

The functionalization of graphene has been reported widely, showing special physical and chemical properties. However, due to the lack of surface functional groups, the poor dispersibility of graphene in solvents strongly limits its engineering applications. This paper develops a novel green “in-situ titania intercalation” method to prepare a highly dispersed graphene, which is enabled by the generation of the titania precursor between the layer of graphene at room temperature to yield titania-graphene nanocomposites (TiO2-RGO). The precursor of titania will produce amounts of nano titania between the graphene interlayers, which can effectively resist the interfacial van der Waals force of the interlamination in graphene for improved dispersion state. Such highly dispersed TiO2-RGO nanocomposites were used to modify epoxy resin. Surprisingly, significant enhancement of the mechanical performance of epoxy resin was observed when incorporating the titania-graphene nanocomposites, especially the improvements in tensile strength and elongation at break, with 75.54% and 176.61% increases at optimal usage compared to the pure epoxy, respectively. The approach presented herein is easy and economical for industry production, which can be potentially applied to the research of high mechanical property graphene/epoxy composite system.

Purpose Vibratory weld conditioning parameters have a great influence on the improvement of mechanical properties of weld connections. The purpose of this paper is to understand the influence of vibratory weld conditioning on the mechanical and microstructural characterization of aluminum 5052 alloy weldments. An attempt is made to understand the effect of the vibratory tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process parameters on the hardness, ultimate tensile strength and microstructure of Al 5052-H32 alloy weldments. Design/methodology/approach Aluminum 5052 H32 specimens are welded at different combinations of vibromotor voltage inputs and time of vibrations. Voltage input is varied from 50 to 230 V at an interval of 10 V. At each voltage input to the vibromotor, there are three levels of time of vibration, i.e. 80, 90 and 100 s. The vibratory TIG-welded specimens are tested for their mechanical and microstructural properties. Findings The results indicate that the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy weld connections improved by increasing voltage input up to 160 V. Also, it has been observed that by increasing vibromotor voltage input beyond 160 V, mechanical properties were reduced significantly. It is also found that vibration time has less influence on the mechanical properties of weld connections. Improvement in hardness and ultimate tensile strength of vibratory welded joints is 16 and 14%, respectively, when compared without vibration, i.e. normal weld conditions. Average grain size is measured as per ASTM E 112–96. Average grain size is in the case of 0, 120, 160 and 230 is 20.709, 17.99, 16.57 and 20.8086 µm, respectively. Originality/value Novel vibratory TIG welded joints are prepared. Mechanical and micro-structural properties are tested.

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) is a recently developed polymeric powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing technique that has received considerable attention in the industrial and scientific community due to its ability to fabricate functional and complex polymeric parts efficiently. In this work, a systematic characterization of the physicochemical properties of MJF-certified polyamide 11 (PA11) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) powder was conducted. The mechanical performance and print quality of the specimens printed using both powders were then evaluated. Both PA11 and TPU powders showed irregular morphology with sharp features and had broad particle size distribution, but such features did not impair their printability significantly. According to the DSC scans, the PA11 specimen exhibited two endothermic peaks, while the TPU specimen exhibited a broad endothermic peak (116–150 °C). The PA11 specimens possessed the highest tensile strength in the Z orientation, as opposed to the TPU specimens which possessed the lowest tensile strength along the same orientation. The flexural properties of the PA11 and TPU specimens displayed a similar anisotropy where the flexural strength was highest in the Z orientation and lowest in the X orientation. The porosity values of both the PA11 and the TPU specimens were observed to be the lowest in the Z orientation and highest in the X orientation, which was the opposite of the trend observed for the flexural strength of the specimens. The PA11 specimen possessed a low coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.13 and wear rate of 8.68 × 10−5 mm3/Nm as compared to the TPU specimen, which had a COF of 0.55 and wear rate of 0.012 mm3/Nm. The PA11 specimens generally had lower roughness values on their surfaces (Ra < 25 μm), while the TPU specimens had much rougher surfaces (Ra > 40 μm). This investigation aims to uncover and explain phenomena that are unique to the MJF process of PA11 and TPU while also serving as a benchmark against similar polymeric parts printed using other PBF processes.

In view of the special requirements of rails to ensure the safe and stable operation of Railways in China, the formation characteristics of austenite grains in high carbon rail are revealed through industrial exploration, the process of industrial rail heating and rolling is simulated, innovative experimental research methods such as different heating and heat treatment are carried out on the actual rails in the laboratory. Transfer characteristics of austenite grain size, microstructures and key properties of high carbon rail during the process are also revealed. The results show that the austenite grain size of industrial produced U75V rail is about 9.0 grade. When the holding temperature is increased from 800 C to 1300 C, the austenite grain size of high carbon rail steel decreases, the austenite grain are gradually coarsened, and the tensile strength increases slightly. The tensile strength is affected by the heating temperature. With the increase of heating temperature, the elongation and impact toughness of high carbon rail decrease. The heating temperature of high carbon rail combined with austenite grain size shows that the heating temperature has a great influence on austenite grain size, and has the most obvious influence on the toughness of high carbon rail.

Friction stir welding (FSW) process is a solid state welding process in which the material being welded does not melt or recast. This process uses a non-consumable tool to generate frictional heat in the abutting surfaces. The welding parameters and tool pin profile play major roles in deciding the weld quality. In this investigation, an attempt has been made to understand effects of process parameters include rotation speeds, welding speeds, and pin diameters on al.uminum weldment using double shoulder tools. Thermal and tensile behavior responses were examined. In this direction temperatures distribution across the friction stir aluminum weldment were measured, besides tensile strength and ductility were recorded and evaluated compared with both single shoulder and aluminum base metal.

Abstract Typical sulfur-cured vulcanizates of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and natural rubber (NR) were prepared, and subjected to air-oven aging at 100 °C. Gum specimens exhibited an initial aging period in which stiffness was unchanged, while tensile strength and strain-to-break were significantly reduced. In contrast, black-filled vulcanizates stiffened during early aging. After intermediate aging times, NR specimens softened, while SBR stiffened. With prolonged aging, all compositions became hard and inextensible.
