The study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the effect of egg size (small, medium and large) and lines on egg and hatch weight, fertility, hatchability, embryonic mortality and infertile eggs of broiler breeders under selection. A total of 120 broiler chicks were hatched from three different egg sizes (40 chicks per egg size as indicated) from breeder parents at 40 weeks of age. The broiler breeders were mated in a ratio of 1:6. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance in a complete randomized design. The result showed that significant (p<0.05) egg weight loss in incubator were recorded with the large egg size group having the minimum loss of 10.85%. The hatch weight was significant (p<0.05) and increased from the small to the large (36.24, 36.73 and 40.22g) egg size group. Line had significant effect (p<0.05) only on the medium egg size: egg weight (sire = 57.50g; dam = 55.00g) and hatch weights (sire = 39.71g; dam = 36.10g). The fertility (94.02, 93.01 and 78.01%), hatchability (87.42, 88.20 and 62.41%) and embryonic mortality (6.58, 9.80 and 15.6%) had significant (p<0.05) differences with the small egg size group performing better excluding the average egg weight, which was then followed closely by medium egg size group. It can be concluded that for higher hatch weight target, the large egg size should be selected but for the purpose of better fertility and hatchability, the medium and small egg sizes should be selected.

AbstractThe aim of the study was to analyze eggshell temperature, embryo viability, and hatchability parameters of broiler breeders at different ages (26-30, 31-35, 36-40, 41-45, and 46-64 weeks). A total of 33,150 eggs from Ross 308 broiler breeders collected from commercial flocks were used to analyze the following: egg weight and egg weight loss during 18 days of incubation; eggshell temperature controlled on days 3, 14, and 18 of incubation; number of infertile eggs including eggs with dead embryos at early stages of development, that is, in the oviduct or after oviposition; the total percentage of embryonic mortality and the percentage of embryonic mortality at different times of incubation; unhatched, dead after hatching, and culled chicks as well as hatchability percentage from fertilized eggs. The hatchability results of Ross 308 broiler breeders were high from the beginning of reproductive season till the 40th week. However, the study failed to reveal any relationships between hatchability and the egg weight, average temperature of the shell, and egg weight loss during incubation period. The oldest hens, over 45 weeks of age, had the highest mortality of chicks and the greatest share of unhatched chicks.

A total of three hundred (300) Japanese quail eggs were used to study the effect of oviposition time and egg weight on hatchability and post-hatch performance. The eggs were grouped into two (2) of 150 eggs based on the oviposition time of Morning and Afternoon. The eggs in each group (150) were further sub-grouped based on the egg weights of 8 to10 grams designated as small sized and 10.1 to 12 grams designated as big size in a 2 x 2 factorial design trial of 4 treatments. Each treatment had seventy five (75) eggs each with three replicates. The four treatments groups were; Big Morning, Small Morning, Big Afternoon, Small Afternoon. Each treatment group was replicated three times with each replicates consisting of twenty-five (25) eggs. Hatchability parameters were determined during incubation period of 18 days. The quail chicks were fed ad-libitum and the post- hatch performance was studied for eight (8) weeks. The data generated were subjected to a one-way analysis of variance. Oviposition time and size of the egg significantly (p<0.05) affected the average hatch weight. The effect of interaction of oviposition time and egg size on post-hatch performance did not have any significant (p>0.05) influence. Oviposition time had a positive correlation (p<0.05) with egg weight, egg weight loss, percent egg weight loss and fertility percentage but negatively correlated with average hatch weight and hatchability percentage. Meanwhile egg size had a positive significant (p<0.01) correlation with average hatch weight. It was concluded that eggs ranging between 10.1 to 12 grams will produce higher hatch weight. However, setting of Japanese quail eggs ranging between 8 to 12 grams irrespective of oviposition time could not affect post-hatch performance of the chicks.

ABSTRACT. A study on performance of crossed local cock with Kedu hen on production phase given diet with different level of protein have been conducted at experimental farm of Syiah Kuala University. The objective of the research was to study the production performance of local chiken and crossed local cock with Kedu given different level of protein. There were 24 local chiken and 24 crossed local cock and Kedu hen used in trial. The study was designed in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with factorial pattern 2 x 3 and 4 replications. There were 2 chicks in each replications. First factor was breed of chicken (A); there were local breed of chiken (A1) and crossed breed of chicken (A2). The second factors were the level of protein in the diet e.g. 16% (R1), 18%(R2), and 20%(R3). Parameters studied were feed consumption, hen day production egg weight, feed conversion and egg indext. The data were analyzed by and analysis of variance and as a significant effect was detected, the analysis was breed and crossed breed. However, there were no significant effect on feed consumption, hen day production, egg weight, feed conversion and egg index. Generally, performance of local breed hen which was feed on 20% protein on the diet.

Background: This experiment was performed to investigate the effect of humidity and egg size on the hatchability, embryonic development and chicks yield in ROSS 308 broiler breeder flock. Methodology: The study was conducted in a completely randomized design with a 3×3 factorial arrangement. The treatments involved three levels of wet bulb humidity (°F WB) including 82, 82.5 and 83°F and three different egg sizes including small, medium or large. Results: The main effect of humidity level on the total and fertile hatchability (%) as well as the weight of one-day-old chicks were significant (P<0.05). Treatment with humidity of 82.5°F enhanced total and fertile hatchability, while humidity of 83°F increased one-day-old chick weight (P<0.05).A better total and fertile hatchability (%), fertility (%), chick yield (%) was observed in medium egg size group (P<0.05). However, the chick weight was greater in large egg size group (P<0.05). The lowest embryonic mortality was belong to medium egg size treatment (P<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results, it was concluded that humidity of 82.5°F as well as the medium egg size showed a better impact on the incubation performance.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of supplements probiotic on layer performance (consumption and conversion ration, persentage hen day and egg weight). This research was held on 21 July—24 August 2014 in the CV. Varia Agung Jaya henhouse laying in the District of Seputih Mataram, Center of Lampung Regency. Local probiotic was made in Microbiology Laboratorium and Moleculer Biology Laboratorium, Faculty of MIPA, Lampung University. The study used completely randomized design with 3 treatments (P1: control ration, P2: control ration with local probiotic 3%, and P3: control ration with comercial probiotic 3%) and 6 replications. Data obtained was analyzed using analysis of variance at 5% level and continued Duncan test at 5% level. Based on the results we can conclude: the effect of treatments significant (P<0.05) on consumption and conversion ration, but no significant (P>0.05) on percentage of hen day and egg weight. Control ration significantly (P<0.05) with control ration with local probiotic 3% and control ration with comercial probiotic 3% on consumption and conversion ration, but no significant (P>0.05) on supplement probiotic. In this study, the effects of egg shape index on hatching characteristics (fertility rate, embryo mortality, hatchability of fertile eggs and hatchability), egg weight loss, chick weight, sex ratio and quality of chicks were investigated. A total of 960 eggs of ATAK- S hybrid parents obtained from Ankara Poultry Research Station were divided into three different groups (SI≤71, 72≤SI≤76, SI≤77) based on shape index and were used. A significant relationship between fertility rate and late embryonic mortality was found in the shape index groups. On the other hand, no differences were found in the rate of weight loss at 18 day, early and middle embryonic mortality, malposition rate, hatchability, sex ratio and chick quality among the shape index groups. It was concluded that shape index affected the hatching results and also that eggs of abnormal shape index should not be used for hatching.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of egg size on embryonic growth during incubation and of egg size and hatch weight on growth to 12 weeks of age in the Nigerian indigenous Guinea fowl. Weight loss in eggs incubated was about 5.42% while weight gain was 1.02g with the fastest increase in the last trimester of incubation. At hatching, the keets were 72.42% of the weight of the eggs. Egg weight was positively significantly (P<0.05) correlated with embryonic weight and is reliable for estimating the small, medium and large size. Egg weight was embryonic weight. Body weight up to 12 weeks of age differed when eggs were classified into significantly (P<0.05) and positively correlated to body weight up to 4 weeks of age and egg weight was found to be reliable for estimating body weight up to 4 weeks only. Hatch weight was also significantly (P<0.05) and positively correlated with subsequent body weight to 8 weeks of age.

Four thousand two hundred hatching eggs were obtained from Bandarah chicken to evaluate the effect of chemical and natural egg disinfectants and fumigation on egg weight loss, embryonic mortality, hatchability, hatch time, chick weight and chick weight loss. Three incubation trials were done; each one contained 1400 hatched eggs and divided into fourteen treatments (100 eggs per each). First treatment (T1) was used as control without any treatment, eggs of second treatment (T2) were dipped in water and third treatment in alcohol, whereas T4, T5, T6, T7 treated egg groups were dipped in chemical disinfectant (sodium chloride, betadine, hydrogen peroxide, virkon S). Egg of T9, T10, T11, T12, T13 and T14 groups were dipped in natural disinfectants (oregano, cumin 02 and 04 % and oregano+ cumin01 and 02), respectively. The thickest eggshell (031mm) was recorded for betadine group in infertile eggs compared with those for formaldehyde fumigation and oregano+cumin 01% oregano+cumin 01% group (035mm) compared with all other treatment groups. Formaldehyde fumigation recorded the worst and highest significant percentage of embryonic mortality (1795%). Highest significant percentages for hatchability of fertile egg were recorded in egg groups with oregano 02 and 04% (9687 and 9576%), cumin 02 and 04 % (9551and 9715%) and oregano+cumin01 and 02% (9619 and 9615%), respectively.
