This chapter addresses a certain resistance against the use of Second Life in education, which is based on the theory of technological minimalism. The main arguments behind this resistance and the theory’s basic concepts are discussed. Then a critique of an example of the application of technological minimalism to the use of Second Life in education follows. Technological minimalism advocates the minimum use of technology needed to transmit content. The text argues that in the current stage of education technology potential educational tools should not be chosen based on that criterion. Technology and education cannot be easily separated anymore. As a conclusion, this chapter suggests a new form of minimalism: a minimalism of content.

This article highlights and discusses potential opportunities, limitations and problems related to using games and game technologies (such as gamification) in education. For the purpose of the study, games are seen ontologically as conditional realities. The world-of-work and world-of-play concept, which stems from the ideas of social phenomenology about lifeworld and multiple realities, forms a methodological basis for the analysis and differentiation between game and non-game activities, thus underlying the scientific novelty of our study. The following conclusions were inferred: By turning learning into a game we may prompt students to perceive the world-of-work (duties, responsibilities) as the world-of-play (desires, freedom); then, either the school will lose its socializing role in preparing students for life, which is a world of work and commitments rather than a world of game, or students will become bored with the game that will lose its appeal (or suggest manipulations). Thus, despite all its advantages, game-based and gamified education should not be seen as a panacea.

The research we will present aims to further develop a discussion started in the master’s degree research entitled Publishing mediation in scientific communication: a study of two human sciences journals, focusing on a fundamental issue of the current times: the constitution of authorship in scientific communication. In order to investigate that issue, we aim to examine the defining conditions of authorship in the production of scientific papers in different areas of knowledge. Therefore, the corpus is composed by four important journals nationwide, Geousp: espaço e tempo, from the Postgraduate Program in Geography of the FFLCH-USP, Cerâmica Industrial, from the Brazilian Ceramic Association, Cadernos Brasileiros de Terapia Ocupacional, from the Occupational Therapy Department of UFSCar, and Revista do Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (Rieb), from the Brazilian Studies Institute of USP. Having the French discourse analysis as theoretical framework, we take into account the relationship between the author and other co-enunciators in the editorial genetic rites (Salgado, 2011), also considering the place of the author as a creative paratopy (Maingueneau, 2014). At the event, we will discuss more precisely the current stage of the research, focusing on the methodology of data collection, in which we used interviews with different professionals involved in the publishing of the mentioned journals.
