Objective: The aim of this study was to understand the preferences of final year dentistry students in postgraduate specialization and explore the factors which influence them in making decisions regarding their future in pursuing postgraduate studies. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was carried out between August 2017- January 2018 at four dental colleges across Karachi, including, three private sector and one public sector institution. A multiple choice, closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 8 statements was prepared and distributed among all the final year BDS students. 225 used and 200 student responses were recorded. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 23 and Chi Square was applied to achieve the results. Results: 81% of the respondents were females. 79% were in the age range of 22-23years. 63% age of students had parents that came from a professional background. 75% of the total respondents wanted to pursue postgraduate studies. The link between the age of the student, gender and the willingness to pursue postgraduate studies was found to be insignificant whereas with parental profession, it was significant (p value=0.016). 60% students believed that they had received enough specialty exposure and encouragement from their institutions to be able to decide on their postgraduate plans. The first choice of specialty for 28% students was Oral Surgery followed by Orthodontics and Endodontics for 22% respondents. The second choice of specialty for the students was Operative Dentistry for 30% of the students followed by 17% who preferred Orthodontics. The rest were divided among the other subjects. 36% of the students cited their aptitude for a specific field as the most common factor for affecting their decision on specialization. 28% cited job status/ prospects and financial reasons as the factor most likely to influence their decision on specialization. Conclusion: According to the study, there was no significant association between the age, gender and the preferences of the student towards postgraduate specialization. However, parental occupation was bound to play a role. The choices of the students as regards specialty selection and influencing factors are varied. As the trend towards postgraduate specialization in dentistry is gaining momentum, it is imperative to research this area more for better planning and allowing students to make informed decisions.

Abstract Background: Thalassemia is one of the most common life-threatening yet preventable congenital hemoglobin disorders especially in South Asian regions like Bangladesh. It has become a rising public health concern for Bangladesh as 6-12% of the population are carriers and many of them are unaware of it. The purpose of the study is to inspect the knowledge and attitude towards thalassemia among the general people of Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in eight administrative regions of Bangladesh between January and October of 2020. A self-administrative close-ended questionnaire was designed to collect information about thalassemia and socio-demographic characteristics. Pearson’s chi-square (χ2) test and One-way ANOVA were performed to assess the association between the demographic variables with knowledge and practice regarding thalassemia. A p-value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: Of the 1623 participants, only 44.7% (726/1623) had heard of thalassemia. The mean knowledge of thalassemia was scored 4.75 ± 2.05 out of a total possible score of 10. Half of the participants had no idea that thalassemia was not a transfusion transmitted disease. About 73.1% knew that blood tests are a diagnosis process to determine thalassemia. The urban residing participants had the highest (5.10 ± 1.99) and participants with primary education had the lowest (3.38 ± 1.37) mean score of knowledge. Participants' knowledge score varied significantly by marital status, living pace, literacy and occupation (p< 0.05). However, about 68.2% and 85.5% of the participants showed a positive attitude towards premarital screening of themselves or their family members and donating blood to thalassemia patients, respectively. Conclusion: The study shows that there is a need to disseminate the information on thalassemia since the knowledge gap is huge among people. These findings will assist the implementation of significant steps such as educational programs, health counseling, premarital screening, campaigning, etc. to increase the awareness of thalassemia.

Introduction: For the patient’s dissatisfaction with the prosthesis, dentist must realize that a patient’s judgment of the treatment outcome is what defines prosthodontic success. All patient’s need is to have a denture which is firm and stable during function. An ill-fitting denture not only brings frustration to the patients but to the dentists as well. So all probable reasons for the looseness of complete denture should be evaluated by the dentist and hence every possible attempt should be made by the dentist to correct it. Aims and Obectives: The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge of looseness of newly fabricated complete denture and its management among dental students of third year, final year and internship, studying in an undergraduate dental college, in the Imphal city of Manipur. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the complete knowledge of complete denture fabrication and their practical implementation in the complete denture fabricational procedure. Materials and Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional survey was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire involving the dental students of 3rd, 4th year and the students doing internship in the Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge at RIMS, Dental college. Total of 150 students participated in the study. Participants were distributed in three groups having 50 students each from 3rd year, 4th year, and students doing internship. All the  participants signed an informed consent before filling the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics included computation of frequencies and percentages. Nonparametric test, namely, chi-square test, was used for further data analysis; p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant and vice versa. Results:. Among all 150 participants who were subjected to self-administered questionnaire, seventy eight (78) subjects (52%) reported that looseness was because of improper secondary impression. Eight (08) subjects (05.33% ) reported that looseness was because of under extension of the green stick compound for peripheral tracing. Three (03) subjects (02%) reported that looseness was because of the overextension of the flanges in peripheral tracing or border moulding. Fifty eight (58) subjects (38.66%) reported that looseness of the newly fabricated complete denture was because of improper posterior palatal seal area record. Three (03) subject (2%) reported that they were unaware of the reasons for the looseness of newly fabricated complete denture. Conclusion: The majority of the students of dental college have limited knowledge of the exact reason for the looseness of newly fabricated complete denture on the day of denture delivery. Students faced problem in its management in dental clinics. The looseness of a newly fabricated complete denture was because of the overextensions of the denture flanges as evaluated by Prosthodontist. Students of dental college should be made aware for the all the probable reasons for looseness of a newly fabricated complete denture. In 90% of the cases it is seen that overextension of the flanges is the most probable reason for an ill fitting, newly fabricated complete denture. Keywords: Complete Denture, Ill fitting denture, Peripheral tracing, Denture Flanges, Secondary Impression, Posterior Palatal Seal.
