PurposeThe aim of this study is to explore students' expectations and perceived effectiveness of computer-assisted review tools, and the differences in reliability and validity between human evaluation and automatic evaluation, to find a way to improve students' English writing ability.Design/methodology/approachBased on the expectancy disconfirmation theory (EDT) and Intelligent Computer-Assisted Language Learning (ICALL) theory, an experiment is conducted through the observation method, semistructured interview method and questionnaire survey method. In the experiment, respondents were asked to write and submit four essays on three online automated essay evaluation (AEE) systems in total, one essay every two weeks. Also, two teacher raters were invited to score the first and last papers of each student. The respondents' feedbacks were investigated to confirm the effectiveness of the AEE system; the evaluation results of the AEE systems and teachers were compared; descriptive statistics was used to analyze the experimental data.FindingsThe experiment revealed that the respondents held high expectations for the computer-assisted evaluation tools, and the effectiveness of computer scoring feedback on students was higher than that of teacher scoring feedback. Moreover, at the end of the writing project, the students' independent learning ability and English writing ability were significantly improved. Besides, there was a positive correlation between students' initial expectations of computer-assisted learning tools and the final evaluation of learning results.Originality/valueThe innovation lies in the use of observation methods, questionnaire survey methods, data analysis, and other methods for the experiment, and the combination of deep learning theory, EDT and descriptive statistics, which has particular reference value for future works.

The objective of the research is to find the most suitable soil conservation practice that may be applied to control landslide hazard. In order to achieve that objective, some research steps must be done, are: (1) to identify the land characteristics of the study area that is based on the understanding of some factors that caused and triggered the landslide hazard, i.e.: slope morphology, rocks/soils characteristics, climatic condition, and landuse; (2) to study the types of landslide that occurs in every landforms and determine the area having ideal landslide form; The proposed landslide in this research is the process of masswasting down-slope as a result of the gravitation action on materials being sliding. The landslide types is including creep, slide, slump, and rocks/soils fall. The methods that being applied in the research include field survey methods and the method for determining landslide hazard by using geographic information techniques. Field survey method was intended to characterize the location of every landslide that have been happened in the study area. The results of field survey were applied as materials for determinating the grade of landslide hazard. Scorring and weighting methods of factors that influence landslide was apllied to determine the grade of landslide hazard. Scor and weight were not same for every parameters used for evaluation. The result of field research shows that landslide happen in every landform unit The study area can be devided into 9 landform unit. The landform units are differentiated into the landslide hazard classes, the study area there were found 5 classes of landslide hazard, namely: (1) vary low hazard equal to 16,65% (1 landform unit); (2) low hazard equal to 7,63% (1 landform unit); (3) medium hazard equal to 37,58% (3 landform unit); (4) high hazard equal to 25,41% (2 landforms unit); and (5) highest hazard equal to 12,73% (2 landform unit). Evaluation of landslide hazard shows hat most of study area have high risk to slide as a result of complex interaction between many factors of landslide.

Little is known about the importance of food-web processes as controls of river primary production due to the paucity of both long-term studies and of depositional environments which would allow retrospective fossil analysis. To investigate how freshwater algal production in the Eel River, northern California, varied over eight decades, we quantified siliceous shells (frustules) of freshwater diatoms from a well-dated undisturbed sediment core in a nearshore marine environment. Abundances of freshwater diatom frustules exported to Eel Canyon sediment from 1988 to 2001 were positively correlated with annual biomass ofCladophorasurveyed over these years in upper portions of the Eel basin. Over 28 years of contemporary field research, peak algal biomass was generally higher in summers following bankfull, bed-scouring winter floods. Field surveys and experiments suggested that bed-mobilizing floods scour away overwintering grazers, releasing algae from spring and early summer grazing. During wet years, growth conditions for algae could also be enhanced by increased nutrient loading from the watershed, or by sustained summer base flows. Total annual rainfall and frustule densities in laminae over a longer 83-year record were weakly and negatively correlated, however, suggesting that positive effects of floods on annual algal production were primarily mediated by “top-down” (consumer release) rather than “bottom-up” (growth promoting) controls.

The development of online payment systems such as the online payment point system has greatly assisted the public in processing monthly transactions such as water bills. However, in its application, this system still uses large devices such as computers and inkjet printers so that the operation takes a long time and is less efficient. Therefore, in this study, a mobile application is designed to replace the role of computers in making water bill payment transactions in the online payment point system (SOPP) of PDAM Malang Regency. The application that is connected to a database server via the internet is also integrated with a compact wireless thermal printer that can be carried anywhere and does not require ink refills so that it can speed up the transaction process and be more efficient in time, paper and space. The research method used was experimental and survey methods. The experimental method is used to test the running of the application, test the application's compatibility with the device and measure the time it takes for the application to exchange data. The survey method is used to test user satisfaction with the application.
