This article focuses on the feasibility of using a desistance-focused approach in the National Probation Service (NPS) in the post-Transforming Rehabilitation (TR) context. Findings are drawn from an exploratory study undertaken in one NPS Division, which used triangulation of three data collection methods: observations of one-to-one supervision sessions, documentary analysis and practitioner focus groups. Findings show that practitioners use elements of a desistance-focused approach, although not exclusively. Values based upon belief in the capacity to change and the need to offer support endure, despite mass organisational upheaval. The article concludes by suggesting that this ‘enduring habitus’ of probation could be an enabler for a desistance-focused approach but instrumentalism in policy and practice is a significant barrier.

Research on the acquisition of scalar implicature (SI) has provided evidence that young children interpret SI differently from adults. However, results have varied, and there is now mounting evidence that around six years of age, children are able to derive the pragmatic inferences associated with SI (Foppolo, Guasti, and Chierchia, 2012). Variability in results across studies could be due to factors such as data collection methods and language-specific differences. In order to add to the growing body of literature in a meaningful way, this research investigated the interpretation of sentences that include SI by Chitonga-speaking children (7-15 years old) in rural Southern Province, Zambia, who were notably beyond the key age of six. The results of this study provide valuable insight into the interpretation of SI in a Bantu language and suggest that the acquisition of pragmatic felicity with words on a scale follows the order of acquisition identified in previous research, but may emerge at a later age in this linguistic context.

The used methods are the wisdom method, exemplary method, habitual method, mauidzah method, and the reward and punishment method. Unlike pesantren culture which is closely tied to the figure of the kyai, the dormitory-based State Islamic schools tend to be weak in terms of the initiative and charisma of the kyai who the leaders are. Individually, kyai figures in boarding-based public boarding schools do not have as strong a role as those in pesantren. However, the ustad and coach figures play a collective and joint role in building students' Islamic character. Keywords: Islamic Character, Madrasah Aliyah, Boarding System, Public Schools

The sacralization of turāth refers to a form of unconditional admiration toward and blind acceptance of the content of turāth books, with the assumption that the books are free of mistakes or inaccuracies. The traditional Dayah of Aceh, a highly valued educational Islamic institution in the eyes of the Acehnese people, plays a pivotal role in promoting various religious understandings as prescribed in turāth books. In order to see to what extent this assumption is true, this field study attempts to investigate the use of turāth at Dayah Mudi Mesra, Samalanga, Aceh. This Dayah has earned much respect and trust from today's Acehnese society due to its role in the teaching of Fikah. The study was carried out to identify the perceptions of the ulama at the traditional dayah toward the position of turāth books in their study of Islamic sciences, especially fikah. This qualitative study employs various data collection methods including literature review, interviews, documentation and observations. In addition, inductive, deductive, and comparative methods were used for data analysis. The study found that the ulama of the traditional dayah in Aceh, in their studies of Islamic sciences, especially fikah, had regarded turāth books as being on par with hadith.

The pandemic closed the door for the use of conventional, face-to-face data collection methods. At the same time, it built a momentum for the exploration and utilization of online data collection methods. However, the belief about superiority of the offline data collection persists. The literature review and the authors’ research experience reveal that offline and online data collection methods yield similar result in terms of data completion and quality. All data collection methods contain weaknesses and strengths. Nonetheless, the online data collection methods are very versatile. They allow the researchers to choose the tools that best align with their research objectives.
