Cannabis has garnered a great deal of new attention in the past couple of years due to the increasing hopes of its legalization for recreational use and indications for medicinal benefit. The increasing consumption and cultivation has led to a multiplication of scientific studies. Focus was placed in this study foremost on yielding morphological data (length of the plant, inflorescence fresh and dry weight) for appropriate mechanical harvest and biochemical cannabinoids analysis of the industrial cannabis “Finola” that is newly grown in Greece. The average, standard error and the coefficient of variation were estimated in case of necessity and the correlation among all results was done using Microsoft Excel 2010 and Minitab 19 Software. Furthermore, three chemical analyses for TLC and NMR techniques were applied for analysis. The Cannabinoid quality or chemotype analysis was also calculated. After extraction and isolation of cannabinoids using ethanol and other separation compounds, cannabinoid acids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) and some other cannabinoids were extracted, isolated, identified and isolated with no delays or limitations. Finola cannabis provided a scientific background that may be considered by the Lebanese growers to accelerate and improve the relative mentality and to provide a collection of relevant scientific information, upon which the field of cannabis analysis can continue to grow.

This study sought to assess the extent of research collaboration in Library and Information Science (LIS) schools in South Africa between 1991 and 2012. Informetric research techniques were used to obtain relevant data for the study. The data was extracted from two EBSCO-hosted databases, namely, Library and Information Science Source (LISS) and Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (LISTA). The search was limited to scholarly peer reviewed articles published between 1991 and 2012. The data was analysed using Microsoft Excel ©2010 and UCINET for Windows ©2002 software packages. The findings revealed that research collaboration in LIS schools in South Africa has increased over the past two decades and mainly occurred between colleagues from the same department and institution; there were also collaborative activities at other levels, such as inter-institutional and inter-country, although to a limited extent; differences were noticeable when ranking authors according to different computations of their collaborative contributions; and educator-practitioner collaboration was rare. Several conclusions and recommendations based on the findings are offered in the article.

The rapid changes in science and technology witnessed in recent decades have significantly contributed to the arousal of the awareness by decision-makers and the public as a whole of the need to strengthen the connection between outreach activities of universities and research institutes and the activities of educational institutions, with a central role played by schools. While the relevance of the problem is nowadays unquestioned, no unique and fully satisfactory solution has been identified. In the present paper we would like to contribute to the discussion on the subject by reporting on an ongoing project aimed to teach Particle Physics in primary schools. We will start from the past and currently planned activities in this project in order to establish a broader framework to describe the conditions for the fruitful interplay between researchers and teachers. We will also emphasize some aspects related to the dissemination of outreach materials by research institutions, in order to promote the access and distribution of scientific information in a way suited to the different age of the target students.

Rapid technology advancements, especially in the past decade, have allowed off-the-shelf unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that weigh less than 250 g to become available for recreational use by the general population. Many well-known manufacturers (e.g., DJI) are now focusing on this segment of UAVs, and the new DJI Mini 2 drone is one of many that falls under this category, which enables easy access to be purchased and used without any Part 107 certification and Remote ID registration. The versatility of drones and drone models is appealing for customers, but they pose many challenges to forensic tools and digital forensics investigators due to numerous hardware and software variations. In addition, different devices can be associated and used for controlling these drones (e.g., Android and iOS smartphones). Moreover, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the adoption of Remote ID is not going to be required for people without the 107 certifications for this segment at least until 2023, which creates finding personally identifiable information a necessity in these types of investigations. In this research, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of DJI Mini 2 and its data stored across multiple devices (e.g., SD cards and mobile devices) that are associated with the drone. The aim of this paper is to (1) create several criminal-like scenarios, (2) acquire and analyze the created scenarios using leading forensics software (e.g., Cellebrite and Magnet Axiom) that are commonly used by law enforcement agencies, (3) and present findings associated with potential criminal activities.

Microscopy and Microanalysis has made significant strides forward over the past year, and I would like to comment on two of these. First, the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) ranked this journal third among the nine microscopy journals it indexes. The ranking was in terms of ISI's Impact Factor, which tracks the number of citations to papers published in the journal. A strong Impact Factor indicates that information in the journal is of interest to other workers in the field. Second, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has selected Microscopy and Microanalysis to be indexed in MEDLINE (PubMed), beginning with the first issue of 2003. As any biologist will tell you, this listing is essential for the electronic visibility of papers in the fast-moving world of life sciences research. I thank Editorial Board member Dave Piston for his efforts in writing the initial letter of application to the NLM.

1. The percentage growth-rate curves for carbohydrate and protein in the chick enbryo have been determined and compared with those already in the literature for the percentage growth-rates of the whole embryo, the dry substance, the fat, and the calorific value. 2. The composition of the embryo in gm. per cent, of dry weight has been calculated and an ontogenetic succession of carbohydrate, protein, and fat, has been brought to light. These three cell-constituents are at their highest levels in the embryo at 4, 11 and 20 days of incubation respectively. This may be correlated with the succession of maximum intensities of combustion, which have the same order (about 5,8.5 and about 18 days). 3. By comparing the curves for absorption-intensity with those representing the constitution of the embryo, it has been possible to trace the passage of building-materials from the yolk and white into the embryo and to analyse still further the movements of the fat and carbohydrate fractions. 4. The concentration of the carbohydrate and protein in the water of the embryonic body has been calculated and compared with a curve already in existence for fat. 5. The curve for intensity of absorption of total foodstuff has been calculated from the results of chemical analyses. It agrees as well as can be expected at present with that calculated from the oxygen consumption and the increase of dry substance in the embryo. 6. The ratio Carbohydrate : Protein decreases during development, thus falling into line with the ratios Water : Solid, Inorganic Substance : Organic Substance, and Protein : Fat. Certain speculations arising out of these facts are discussed. 7. There is a relation of simultaneity between the combustion of carbohydrate, protein, and fat, and the part these types of molecule play in the constitution of the whole embryo.

The dry weight and organic carbon content of eggs and components of Clyde spring herring eggs were measured at intervals during their development. Comparison with previously published data suggests that an increase has occurred in the weight of these eggs over the past thirty years. It is clear that only a small proportion of the material deposited in the form of herring spawn actually remains attached to the substratum when the larvae hatch and so is available for potential integration into the benthic food web. This was confirmed by the determination at intervals over two years of the organic carbon content of the gravel sediments on spawning grounds of the Clyde spring herring. Although the deposition of herring spawn resulted in an immediate marked increase in the carbon content of the spawning ground sediments, carbon levels quickly returned to pre-spawning levels and there was no evidence of any permanent or long lasting increase. This held true when the spawn died and decayed in situ and even when it was mixed into the sediment by wave action. The rapid decrease in carbon levels is attributed to the strong water movements which frequently occur over the spawning grounds.

Great scientific advances of the past are discussed in the context of how they were first published, or otherwise brought to the attention of the broader scientific community, and the modern scientific publishing sector is explored. The types and categories of scientific journals are discussed, along with an overview of current publishing trends, such as the exponential increase in number of journals, changes in the ways in which researchers access the literature, and in particular the emergence and current state of open access journals. In addition, various ways in which journals are ranked are discussed, and key trends in such lists over the last ten years or so explored.

Abstract In addition to the importance of many Dioscorea species (yams) as starchy staple food, some representatives are known and still used as a source for the steroidal sapogenin diosgenin, which, besides phytosterols derived from tall-oil, is an important precursor for partial synthesis of steroids for pharmaceutical research and applications. While in edible yams the diosgenin content should be as low as possible, a high yield of the compound is preferable for cultivars which are grown for the extraction of sterols. In the past, miscalculations and insufficiently precise techniques for quantification of diosgenin prevailed. Therefore we set out to re-evaluate the steroid content of a world collection of Dioscorea species, using leaves as sample material. We optimized diosgenin quantification techniques and fingerprinted the whole collection with the DNA amplification fingerprinting (DAF) technique. Total diosgenin contents ranged from 0.04 to 0.93% of dry weight within the collection. Several Dioscorea cultivars can be characterized via their DAF fingerprint patterns.

Abstract Background Pennsylvania is home to Amish and Mennonite communities with an estimated combined population of over 90,000 people. Under-immunization is common with vaccine preventable diseases, including tetanus, periodically presenting among children from these communities. Nearly 20% of nationally reported pediatric tetanus cases in the past 10 years were treated at our institution, the tertiary care center which serves these unique populations. We characterize demographics and costs of treating this rare, but largely preventable infection. Methods Chart review based on ICD-9 codes for tetanus infection in patients aged 0–17 years treated for clinically diagnosed tetanus infection between January 2006 and December 2015. Cost data were extracted from Horizon Business Insight software and analyzed in Microsoft Excel. Cases were mapped using UDS Mapper. Results Four cases of pediatric tetanus infection were identified with 100% occurring in unimmunized patients and 3 of 4 (75%) in Amish individuals. Treatment costs amounted to $121,170 with estimated payment of $80,664 resulting in a net loss to the hospital of $40,506 over the course of 10 years. Each case treated resulted in a median loss of $4,402 to the hospital. Conclusion The costs of treating this vaccine preventable disease for both hospitals and under-immunized Amish and Mennonite communities, who tend to pay out-of-pocket, should be emphasized in targeted outreach and education programs at the population level. Compared to evidence-based public health, evidence-based medicine is a more familiar phrase. Evidence-based medicine has become increasingly popular in the past decade, due in large part to the emergence of computerized database search technology and advanced statistical tools which allow researchers to quickly identify and summarize vast amounts of scientific information.Today, the concept of evidence-based public health is gaining momentum and has grown in popularity. However, the term “evidence-based” lacks clarification and is subject to a variety of interpretations. The evidence that supports evidence-based medicine or public health may include individual experience, anecdotal information, the content of a single scientific article, or the results of a sophisticated systematic review of scientific literature. The imprecise language used to describe evidence leads to confusion over what types of evidence are most appropriate in answering different types of questions.
