Abstract The beauty of literary translation is determined by the artistic nature of the original work. Therefore, how to represent its aesthetic values should be considered the ultimate objective of literary translation. This paper, which is theoretically based on formal and non-formal aesthetic constituents of literature classified by the Chinese translation theorist Liu Miqing as well as traditional Chinese philology and modern literature stylistics, discusses extensively how to succeed in representing aesthetic values of literary works from two aspects, i.e., formal aesthetic markers and non-formal aesthetic markers. It also points out that since in a literary work formal markers and non-formal markers are really inseparable, the proper combination of the two can provide a satisfactory solution.

The paper deals with the problem of intermedial connections in literature and focuses on literary translation. The main point is the interaction of verbal and sound images in a poetic work. The researcher analyzes the manifestation of musicality in Ukrainian translations of P. Verlaine’s poem “Il pleure dans mon cœur…” The translations by M. Dry-Khmara (“In the heart both tears and pain…”), B. Ten (“My heart is crying…”), M. Orest (“Crying in my soul…”), M. Rylskyi (“So quietly the heart cries…”), M. Lukash (“Crying is bursting out of heart…”), H. Kochur (“The heart is full of tears…”), M. Tereshchenko (“Singing without words”), I. Svitlychnyi (“The heart is whimpering and crying…”), and A. Sodomora (“There are tears in the soul, tears…”). The embodiment of musicality in the translations of P. Verlaine’s poem has been considered in two aspects. These are the comparison of the phonetic organization of the original work and translations, and comparison of melodics and melody of the original and translations. The results of the study show that intermediate phenomena in the literary work can be translated. Such phonic means as alliteration, assonance, equiphony, sound anaphora, sound circle, used by Ukrainian translators, make it possible to adequately render the sound abundance of P. Verlaine’s poetry. The phonic instrumentation in Ukrainian translations of “Il pleure dans mon cœur…” conveys the melody of Verlaine’s poem and creates sound images that help to reveal the general meaning of the work. The melodics of P. Verlaine’s poetry is reproduced in Ukrainian translations through rhythmic and intonational features while the melody of the original is based on the immanent sound properties of the text. In Ukrainian translations, it is embodied in peculiar melodic images, which, preserving the sound and mood of the original, testify to the original rethinking of the poetic motives performed by translators.

In the article the phenomenon of translation is regarded as mental interpretation activity not only in linguistics, but also in literary criticism. The literary work and its translation are most vivid guides to mental and cultural life of people, an example of intercultural communication. An adequate perception of non-native culture depends on communicators’ general fund of knowledge. The essential part of such fund of knowledge is native language, and translation, being a mediator, is a means of cross-language and cross-cultural communication. Mastering another language through literature, a person is mastering new world and its culture. The process of literary texts’ translation requires language creativity of the translator, who becomes so-called “co-author” of the work. Translation activity is a result of the interpreter’s creativity and a sort of language activity: language units are being selected according to language units of the original text. This kind of approach actualizes linguistic researching of real translation facts: balance between language and speech units of the translated work (i.e. translationinterpretation, author’s made-up words, or revised language peculiarities of the characters). The process of literary translation by itself should be considered within the dimension of a dialogue between cultures. Such a dialogue takes place in the frame of different national stereotypes of thinking and communicational behavior, which influences mutual understanding between the communicators with the help of literary work being a mediator. So, modern linguistics actualizes the research of language activities during the process of literary work’s creating. This problem has to be studied furthermore, it can be considered as one of the central ones to be under consideration while dealing with cultural dimension of the translation process, including the process of solving the problems of cross-cultural communication.

This article reviews the text concept studies on the material of a Russian poem and its translation into Chinese within the framework of the anthropological linguistics. The study of individual concepts, embodying the ethical and aesthetic values of a creative person, is relevant and promising for the further development of establishing their role in the implementation of a writer’s individual style in translation. The author analyzes the lexical-semantic space, which implements a fragment of the content of the universal concept of HOME, presented in the original and translated texts. The author presents a linguistic experiment carried out among Chinese students. Its purpose was to consider the cognitive (indicative, figurative, and situational) basis of the content of the translation and the degree of its compliance with the author’s intention. The tasks include the description of translation transformations as well as interpretation of the mental reactions of Chinese respondents. The results obtained indicate that the author’s representation of the HOME concept is achieved through the use of cognitive structures, associated with Russian traditional views. The representation of the discursive concept by interpreters is accompanied by cognitive refraction in terms of the associative development of thoughts. Literary translation is seen as an indirect act of intercultural communication, the subjects of which — the author, translator, and reader — have a set of individual characteristics, lining up on the principle of following an ethnic cultural standard to individual-emotional and gender marked manifestations.

Abstract The term monumentum is used in Latin literature to describe a range of monuments across media, including temples, literary works, statues, and inscriptions. This article surveys the variety of monumenta in Livy’s Ab urbe condita, which range from the text itself to victory inscriptions and bronze sculptures meant to commemorate military as well as political achievements. The borders between historiography and physical artefacts are often blurred by Livy through inscriptional intermediality, a phenomenon defined as the mixing of visual and textual media. By outlining how Livy achieves this combination, and demonstrating how the specific ratio of literary, linguistic, and topographical features in his ekphrases generate unique impressions of real-world monuments, this chapter re-reads Livy’s history from the perspective of intermedial theory. This process not only advances our understanding of the Ab urbe condita as a literary work, but also thrusts individual aspects of Livy’s narrative technique – including visuality and unique formulae such as the introductory formula tabula … cum indice hoc posita est (Livy 41.28.8) – into the spotlight.
