Becoming Horse–Capitalism and the Human Identity: An Analysis of Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You

The aim of the article is to dissect the phenomenon of capitalist labor in the US as depicted in Boots Riley’s film Sorry to Bother You (2018). The primary focus of the article is the film’s rendering of the creation of horse humans which the article reads as a metaphor for class relations in the modern society. First, the article analyzes the film’s plot in the context of the cultural assumptions and beliefs connected with the figure of the horse. Next, it draws on Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of “becoming-animal” in order to unveil the revolutionary potential possibly latent in hybridization. Finally, after commenting on the ways in which capitalism weaponizes technological development, the article inscribes the notion of hybridization into the nature-culture dichotomy.

Although the countries of Western Europe are very similar to the US in terms of their social, political, and economic conditions, they differ greatly when it comes to religion. Chapter 10 discusses how these differences can be explained. The empirical analysis shows that, besides the considerable differences in the level of religiosity between the US and Western Europe, there are also surprising similarities in the weakening church ties and religious practices. The findings demonstrate that it is in many respects not Europe but America that is the exception. This relates among other things to the level of social inequality, which is unusually high for a modern society, the strong tendencies towards functional dedifferentiation, such as between religion and politics, and the traditionalism of the culturally accepted system of values.

This chapter examines the challenge for entrepreneurial companies of going beyond the start-up phase and growing into large successful companies. We examine the long-term financing of these so-called scale-up companies, focusing on the United States, Europe, and Canada. The chapter first provides a conceptual framework for understanding the challenges of financing scale-ups. It emphasizes the need for investors with deep pockets, for smart money, for investor networks, and for patient money. It then shows some data about the various aspects of financing scale-ups in the United States, Europe, and Canada, showing how Europe and Canada are lagging behind the US relatively more at the scale-up than the start-up stage. Finally, the chapter raises the question of long-term public policies for supporting the creation of a better scale-up environment.

The creation of the Islamic State in Iraq and Sham (ISIS) changed the nature of jihadism worldwide. For a few years (2014–2017) it exemplified the destructive capacity of jihadism and created a new utopia aimed at restoring the past greatness and glory of the former caliphate. It also attracted tens of thousands of young wannabe combatants of faith (mujahids, those who make jihad) toward Syria and Iraq from more than 100 countries. Its utopia was dual: not only re-creating the caliphate that would spread Islam all over the world but also creating a cohesive, imagined community (the neo-umma) that would restore patriarchal family and put an end to the crisis of modern society through an inflexible interpretation of shari‘a (Islamic laws and commandments). To achieve these goals, ISIS diversified its approach. It focused, in the West, on the rancor of the Muslim migrants’ sons and daughters, on exoticism, and on an imaginary dream world and, in the Middle East, on tribes and the Sunni/Shi‘a divide, particularly in the Iraqi and Syrian societies.

How does the consortium define open access? Are approaches to copyright in reproductive media across the US, UK and EU compatible, and can 14 partners from six countries agree to assess and express rights in the same way? Developments in the field and the consortium's 2020 International Copyright Workshop project have helped PHAROS define and address these issues.

This article evaluates the US ‘Monuments Men’ operations in Korea, focusing on wartime and postwar efforts undertaken by the government of the USA to preserve and restore artwork seized by Japan. The Asian initiative, conceived a year after the European model was established, likewise drew upon cultural, intellectual, and academic resources. Yet fundamental differences in personnel, perceptions of Korean cultural backwardness, prevailing imperialist attitudes, and Cold War sensibilities rendered a very different kind of project. Ultimately the ‘Monuments Men’ succeeded primarily in preserving the cultural patrimony of Japan, but it failed to recover any plundered objects from Korea, or the rest of Asia for that matter. Focusing on the US deliberations regarding repatriation of Korean looted art, this article lays bare both the US preoccupation with maintaining the national interests of its newest ally, and exposes an understanding of East Asian cultural hierarchy that privileged Japan’s artistic achievement and modern society above all.

В статье представлен обзор выставки современного декоративноприкладного искусства Ленатавр, проходившей в Красноярском художественном музее имени В.И.Сурикова. Описание совместного творческого проекта музея и художников керамиста Елены Красновой и живописца Елены Лихацкой наглядно иллюстрирует технические трудности и творческие процессы, возникающие в совместной работе авторов произведений и куратора выставки. Автором с позиции куратора рассматривается подготовка выставки как творческий процесс и экспозиция выставки как самостоятельный художественный объект, при создании которого необходимо учесть множество взаимодополняющих факторов, соблюсти определенные условия экспонирования на музейной площади, совместить творчество разных художников, избежав диссонанса. Главная задача куратора состоит в том, чтобы представить произведения художников с такой позиции, при которой у посетителей возникает необходимость изучения творчества представленных авторов, которая вызывает побуждение к размышлению, привлекает внимание к животрепещущим вопросам современного общества, рассматриваемым в работах Елены Красновой. The article presents an overview of the Lenataur exhibition of contemporary arts and crafts, which took place in the Krasnoyarsk Art Museum named after V.I. Surikov. A description of the joint creative project of the museum and artists (ceramist Elena Krasnova and painter Elena Lihacka) vividly illustrates the technical difficulties and creative processes that arise in the joint work of the authors of the works and the curator of the exhibition. From the position of the curator, the author considers the preparation of the exhibition as a creative process and the exhibition as an independent artistic object, the creation of which requires taking into account many complementary factors, meeting certain conditions of display on the museum square, combining the work of various artists, avoiding dissonance. The main task of the curator is to present works of artists from such a position, in which the visitors need to study the works of the submitted authors, which causes an incentive to reflect, draws attention to the burning issues of modern society, considered in the works of Elena Krasnova.

With the emergence of culinary multiculturalism in the globalized world, ethnic restaurants have become central symbols of postmodern life, no longer relegated to a domestic and community sphere, but able to attract non-ethnic customers without necessarily destroy food cultural heritage. In line with this trend, the article aims to contribute to the literature on new food tourism experiences by examining contemporary Italian restaurants in the US to investigate how Italian food identity in ethnic restaurants is advertised and sold. Starting from the literature on Italian culinary immigration in America, from the rise of the first Italian restaurants to the invention of the Italian American culinary tradition, the article provides an ethnographic study to understand the changing business environment that is leading new entrepreneurs in foodservice to diversify their business models towards the creation of new food tourism experiences as a result of an ever-changing dialogue between tradition and innovation.

The modern economy and society are in a state of crisis, which is linked to the exhaustion of the existing development paradigm based on the concept of "market fundamentalism". High rates of technological development and the transition to a new technological order exacerbate the contradictions of the existing social and economic organization, causing problems that can lead to a civilization crisis. It is necessary to develop new theoretical concepts that are adequate to the modern period of global transformations. The author shows that such concepts should be based on the theories of the New Industrial Society of the second generation and noonomy. Integration of the elements of these theories into the system of modern knowledge, as well as the implementation of their conclusions into the practice of economic policy will help to overcome existing problems and successfully achieve the goals of Russia's national development.
