This article reflects upon initial teacher education programme’s employment of reflection. The article argues that the orginary ground of educational reflection, dominated by theorists such as Dewey and Schon, has been colonised by a form of ‘Total Reflection’ that is conceptualised and manufactured within the Teacher Standards and its associated discourse. Through employment of the concept of Abbau, the work of Borges and mirror theory, the article reveals how student teachers are not enabled to be reflective but instead are created as the celebrated automata whose professional image is shrouded, codified and solidified by a Master Weaving machine. The article suggests that if educational reflection is to become useful in teacher development, then it must return to its past incarnations.

Abstract Purpose Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES®) is a standard diagnostic tool in dysphagia. The combination of FEES® and narrow band light (narrow band imaging; NBI) provides a more precise and detailed investigation method. So far, this technique could only be performed with the NBI illumination. The new version of the “professional image enhancement technique” (PIET) provides another image enhancing system. This study investigates the eligibility of PIET in the FEES® procedure. Methods Both techniques, NBI and PIET, were compared using a target system. Furthermore, the image enhancement during FEES® was performed and recorded with the two systems during daily routine. Results Performing an image enhancement during FEES® is possible with both systems PIET and NBI. On the target system, the contrast of the PIET showed a brighter and a more detailed picture. In dysphagia patients, no difference between PIET and NBI was detected. Conclusions PIET proved to be non-inferior to NBI during image enhancement FEES®. So far, image enhancement FEES® was exclusively connected to NBI. With the PIET system, an alternative endoscopy technology is available for certain indications.

This chapter centers the narratives of Black women political elites to demonstrate how they think about their professional image and how they craft their look in response to voters’ expectations. A series of one-on-one interviews with Black women political elites shows that these women are deeply aware of how their bodies are assessed and that they are constantly determining how they want to present themselves. This chapter addresses Black women’s agency—how Black women prefer to look given the constraints of their physical characteristics. It also considers the political structure—how Black women believe voters and constituents view them based on their chosen appearance or styling choices. The chapter finds that Black women political elites vary in how they choose to present themselves and in their rationale for their styling choices. However, all the women interviewed recognize the racist and sexist constraints that inform their personal aesthetics.
