To examine influence of insulin resistance and other clinical risk factors for the MetS (metabolic syndrome) on vascular structure and function in young adults. This cross-sectional study was conducted in a cohort of young adults (mean age 22 years) and their siblings participating in a longitudinal study of cardiovascular risk (n=370). Insulin sensitivity was determined by euglycaemic insulin clamp. EDD (endothelium-dependent dilation) was determined by flow-mediated dilation using high-resolution ultrasound imaging of the brachial artery. EID (endothelium-independent dilation) was determined by NTG (nitroglycerine)-mediated dilation. The diameter and cIMT (intima–media thickness) of the carotid artery were also measured. There was no significant difference between males and females for age or body mass index. However, males had significantly higher glucose and triacylglycerol (triglyceride) levels, while the females had significantly higher HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol) and insulin sensitivity (13.00±0.33 compared with 10.71±0.31 mg·kg−1 of lean body mass·min−1, P<0.0001). Although peak EDD was significantly lower (6.28±0.26 compared with 8.50±0.28%, P<0.0001) in males than females, this difference was largely explained by adjustment for brachial artery diameter (P=0.15). Peak EID also was significantly lower in males than females (20.26±0.44 compared with 28.64±0.47%, P<0.0001), a difference that remained significantly lower after adjustment for brachial artery diameter. Males had a significantly greater cIMT compared with females (females 0.420±0.004 compared with males 0.444±0.004 mm, P=0.01), but when adjusted for carotid diameter, there was no significant difference (P=0.163). Although there were gender differences in vascular function and structure in the young adult population examined in this study, many of the differences were eliminated simply by adjusting for artery diameter. However, the lower EID observed in males could not be explained by artery diameter. Future studies need to continue to examine influence of gender on EID and other measures of vascular function.

AbstractBackgroundAesthetic alterations in the face can be self-perceived and can affect quality of life in young adults.ObjectiveTo assess the impact of malocclusion on self- perceived oro-facial behaviour among young adults.MethodsA Cross sectional study was conducted among 638 young adults (aged 18–21 years) of Hyderabad city. One college from each of the five zones of the Hyderabad city (five colleges) were selected by simple random sampling procedure. A 21-item Oro-facial investment scale (OFIS) questionnaire assessing self-perceived oral health knowledge, attitude, practice and Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) assessing the severity of malocclusion was used. Data were analysed with standard statistical software (SPSS, Statistical package for the social sciences, version 20.0). p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsMales had higher mean scores for knowledge (2.90 ± 0.49) than females (2.73 ± 0.82) and was statistically significant (p = 0.002*). No statistically significant gender differences were found in relation to attitude and practice. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that there was a significant difference in all the three scores (knowledge, attitude, practice) with respect to age, with significantly high score for knowledge and practice among 18 year old subjects (p = 0.0001*; p = 0.0003* respectively) and attitude among 21 year old subjects (p = 0.0049*). No statistically significant age, gender differences were found in relation to DAI scores. Upon correlation, DAI significantly and positively correlated with knowledge (p = 0.03*) and attitude (p = 0.0001*).ConclusionThis study has shown significant impact of malocclusion on the self-perceived oro-facial behaviour.

Abstract Background The increasing prevalence of high myopia has already been noted. It is important to know the factors associated with high myopia to prevent complications. In the present study, we investigated the epidemiological characteristics of high myopia and determine its related factors among a Japanese adult population. Methods JPHC-NEXT Eye Study was performed in Chikusei-city, located in a rural area in mid-east Japan in 2013-2015. A cross-sectional observational analysis was conducted to investigate prevalence and related factors of high myopia through this study. A total of 6,101 participants aged ≥40 years who have no history of ocular surgeries were included in this study. High myopia was defined as a spherical equivalent refraction of ≤ -6.00 diopters (D) based on the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Potential high myopia-related factors included intraocular pressure (IOP), corneal structure, corneal endothelial cell density, age, height, body mass index, heart rate, blood pressure, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGTP), total cholesterol (T cholesterol), triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol), blood glucose (glucose), Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), creatinine, and current history of systemic and ocular disorders. The odds ratios of high myopia associated with these factors were estimated using the logistic regression models adjusted for the associated factors. Results The prevalence of high myopia was 3.8% among the men and 5.9% among the women with a significant difference. Age was inversely associated with high myopia. We also found a positive association between IOP and high myopia. Other factors were not associated with high myopia for either men or women. Conclusions In this community-based sample, age was inversely, and IOP was positively associated with high myopia in both the men and the women.

Summary COVID-19 and the related quarantine disrupted young adults’ academic and professional life, daily routine and socio-emotional well-being. This cross-sectional study focused on the emotional and behavioural responses of a young adult population during the COVID-19-related quarantine in April 2020, in Greece. The study was conducted through an online survey. A total of 1559 young adults, aged 18−30 years, completed Steele’s Social Responsibility Motivation Scale and the De Jong Gierveld Loneliness Scale, and answered questions about compliance with instructions, quarantine-related behaviours and coping strategies. According to the results, participants displayed a relatively high sense of social responsibility (M = 16.09, SD = 2.13) and a trend towards moderate feeling of loneliness (M = 2.65, SD = 1.62); young women reported significantly higher levels of loneliness than men. The majority complied with instructions often (46.4%) or always (44.8%). Significantly more women created a new social media account and used the social media longer than 5 h/day, compared with men. Resorting to religion, practicing sports and sharing thoughts and feelings about COVID-19 with others predicted higher levels of social responsibility; humour, practicing sports and sharing thoughts and feelings about COVID-19 with others predicted lower levels of loneliness. Conclusively, COVID-19 is expected to have a significant psychological impact on young adults. Currently, Greece is going through the second quarantine period. This study raises awareness about loneliness in young adults during the COVID-19-related quarantine and highlights the importance of developing online programmes, attractive to younger people, to nurture adaptive coping strategies against loneliness.

Aim: Atherosclerosis involves vascular endothelial damage and lipid metabolism disorder, which is closely related to the occurrence and development of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, studies on non-high albuminuria DKD (NHADKD) with an albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR) <30 mg/g are rare. This study is to investigate the relationship between atherogenic factors and the occurrence of NHADKD. Methods: Serum lipid indicators, lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lip-PLA2) and homocysteine levels were measured in 1116 subjects to analyze their relationship with NHADKD. Results: Among all subjects, Lip-PLA2 had the closest but relatively weak correlation with ACR ( r = 0.297, p < 0.001) and only homocysteine was moderately correlated with eGFR ( r = −0.465, p < 0.001). However, in patients with NHADKD, these atherosclerotic factors were weakly correlated or uncorrelated with eGFR (max. | r| = 0.247). Stratified risk analysis showed that when ACR was <10 mg/g, homocysteine [OR = 6.97(4.07–11.95)], total cholesterol (total-Chol) [OR = 6.04(3.03–12.04)], and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-Chol) [OR = 5.09(2.99–8.64)] were risk factors for NHADKD. There was no significant difference of OR between these three factors ( Z = 0.430–1.044, all p > 0.05). When ACR was ⩾10mg/g, homocysteine [OR = 17.26(9.67–30.82)] and total-Chol [OR = 5.63(2.95–10.76)] were risk factors for NHADKD, and ORhomocysteine was significantly higher than ORtotal-Chol ( Z = 3.023, p < 0.05). Conclusions: The occurrence of NHADKD may be related to the levels of homocysteine, total-Chol, HDL-Chol, and Lip-PLA2 in blood. Among them, homocysteine may be most closely related to NHADKD.

Introduction: Endothelial function is impaired in heavy or binge drinking. Heavy drinking should be a predictor of endothelial dysfunction. However, there is little information on the effects of dose-dependent alcohol consumption on endothelial function. Therefore, we evaluated the relationship between alcohol consumption and endothelial function in a large general population. Methods and Results: We measured flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) in 2734 men who provided self-report about habitual alcohol intake. The subjects were divided into five groups by alcohol consumption: none (0 g/week), light (0 g/week< to ≤140 g/week), moderate (140 g/week< to ≤280 g/week), heavy (280 g/week< to ≤420 g/week), and excessive (420 g/week<). Age, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase, uric acid, plasma glucose, hemoglobin A1c, and current smoking were significantly correlated with alcohol consumption. FMD showed a gradual decrease according to increased alcohol consumption (none, 6.6±3.4%; light, 6.2±3.0%; moderate, 6.0±3.0%; heavy, 5.5±2.9%; excessive, 5.3±3.0%; P<0.01). There was a significant difference in FMD between the non-drinker group and the light drinker group (P=0.018). After adjusted risk factors, we showed the significantly smaller FMD in the 4 drinker groups than in the non-drinker group: light drinker group (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.75), moderate drinker group (OR, 1.36; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.82), heavy drinker group (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.46 to 2.87), excessive drinker group (OR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.43 to 2.89). Conclusions: These findings suggest that even light alcohol consumption impair the endothelial function. Alcohol drinking may be harmful for vascular function.

ABSTRACT: THE EFFECTS OF PERSONALITY TRAITS ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Indonesia was considered as a country who has low physical activity. Hence, it was necessary to promote physical activity in order preventing degenerative disease and death in young adults. Personality traits were good predictors of physical activity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of personality traits on physical activity. This is a survey analytical study cross-sectional design on 33 samples aged 18-26 years old. The study found that personalities traits influenced physical activity with contribution 32% (p≤0,05), especially of extraversion, agreeableness, and openness. There was significant difference of physical activity based on gender and exercise routine, this should be a consideration for further research.  Keywords: Personality Traits, Physical Activity, Gender.  Indonesia dianggap sebagai negara dengan aktivitas fisik yang cukup rendah, sehingga diperlukan promosi aktivitas fisik untuk pencegahan terhadap penyakit degeneratif dan kematian di usia muda. Trait kepribadian dianggap sebagai faktor psikologis kuat dalam identifikasi aktivitas fisik. Penelitian ini adalah survei analitik dengan rancangan cross-sectional pada 33 sampel usia 18-26 tahun yang rutin dan tidak rutin berolahraga. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa trait kepribadian berkontribusi sebesar 32% (p≤0,05) terhadap aktivitas fisik, khususnya trait ekstraversi, agreeableness, dan openness. Adanya perbedaan signifikan aktivitas fisik dan trait kepribadian antar gender dan rutinitas berolahraga, hal ini disarankan menjadi pertimbangan untuk penelitian lanjutan. Kata Kunci: Trait Kepribadian, Aktivitas Fisik, Gender.

Objectives: To assess common presenting features and the role of Ultrasound in evaluation of Hepatobiliary diseases in ourpopulation. Design: Cross sectional study. Setting: Khyber X rays, Khyber Medical Centre, Peshawar. Period: August 2010 to December2010. Material and Methods: Data from patients presenting for evaluation of Hepatobiliary diseases was analyzed for presenting complaintsand ultrasound findings according to objectives of the study. Results: In total 197 cases were included in the study. The age wise categorizationincluded pediatric population (6.1%) adult population (87.3%) and geriatric population (6.6%). Upper abdominal pain was the most commonpresenting feature in all age groups as well as in both genders. Cholelithiasis with or without cholecystitis was the most common ultrasoundfinding in all age groups. No statistically significant difference was found between presenting features or ultrasound findings in different agegroups as well as across gender. Conclusions: Hepatobiliary diseases are among major illnesses in our region. Ultrasound is a sensitive anduseful tool for screening and evaluation of Hepatobiliary disorders.

Introduction: Simple vascular function measurements are desirable for atherosclerosis risk assessments. Recently, we developed a novel modality of automated oscillometric method to measure a brachial artery’s vascular elastic modulus (V E ) and reported that V E is uninfluenced by blood pressure. Galectin-3 (Gal-3) expressed in endothelial cells regulates vascular fibrosis and is a molecular determinant of vascular stiffness. Hypothesis: We aimed to clarify whether V E selectively correlates with marker of vascular stiffness in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: 12 moderate-to-severe CKD pts (mean eGFR 25.9±23.5 mL/min/1.73m 2 ) and 15 controls were studied. Rest V E in brachial artery was measured by new automated oscillometric detector. V E was defined as follows [VE =ΔPressure/ (100XΔarea/Area) mmHg/%]. Using ultrasound, the brachial artery diameter at rest and during reactive hyperemia [flow mediated dilatation (FMD) with endothelial-dependent dilatation] was measured. Gal-3 and interleukin-6 (IL-6), a representative inflammatory marker, were measured by enzyme-linked immune assay. Results: CKD had lower FMD (4.86±3.37 vs 9.05±2.98 %, P=0.003) and had attenuated V E than control (1.08±0.26 vs 0.83±0.17 mmHg/%, P=0.002). CKD had higher IL-6 (0.67±0.29 vs 0.29±0.33 pg/mL, P=0.003) and higher Gal-3 (20.0±12.4 vs. 5.84±2.83 pg/mL, P<0.001). V E was negatively correlated with %FMD (r=-0.46, P=0.015) and correlated with Gal-3 (r=0.40, P=0.036) but not in IL-6 (r=0.21, P=0.28). Conclusions: Attenuated vascular elasticity detected by this novel approach closely correlated with increase in Gal-3 and reduced FMD in CKD. This may indicate that the attenuated vascular elasticity selectively reflects vascular fibrosis as evidenced by Gal-3 and subsequent endothelial responses to vascular stiffness. Thus, this oscillometric measurement may be useful for detecting vascular fibrosis information and dysfunction in endothelium level.

Body self-relation is a multidimensional construct defined by persons" perceptions of and attitudes about their body. Body image does not simply reflect the biological enrichment of the individual or the feedback received from the significant others. The way you perceive about your body is your cognitive body image. This can lead to excessive concern with body shape and weight. Behaviors in which you relate as a result of your body image encompass your behavioral body image. A study based on the gender differences in body relation relating to young adults rating the comparison in perception of both male and female data. Hundred participants of both male and female took part in answering the by Multidimensional body selfrelations questionnaire (MBSRQ-AS). Results demonstrated by Mann Whitney U test revealed that there is significant difference between male and female young adults in their relation to body self, p<0.05, (2- tailed) in appearance orientation. There is no statistical sig.>0.05 differences in the other dimensions. Therefore, this study rejects the null hypothesis in (dimension) appearance orientation and accepts the null hypothesis (dimensions) in appearance evaluation, body area satisfaction, overweight preoccupation and self-classified weight. Background: Recent evidence has indicated a ceiling to the benefits of exercise training that, if chronically surpassed, may have a negative effect on cardiac function. Conversely, improvements in peripheral arterial function may respond positively to chronic high volume training. Recent studies have shown that flow-mediated dilation (FMD) is decreased immediately after maximal exercise in sedentary subjects and is unaltered in subjects who participate in moderate volume exercise. We investigated the acute effects of maximal exercise on vascular function of elite female athletes with a high-volume training history. Methods: Fifteen elite female soccer players (mean age: 22.1 ± 4.4 years; BMI: 20.76 ± 1.75 kg/m2), with a high volume/intensity training history (4-6 hours per day) were evaluated. Subjects underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX) on a treadmill (VO2max 41.1 ± 3.9 mLO2•kg-1•min-1). Brachial artery FMD was determined using high-resolution ultrasound before and immediately after CPX. Flow velocity were measured at baseline (BSL) and during reactive hyperemia (RH) both prior to and following exercise. Results: Brachial artery diameter increased during RH before (3.42 ± 0.38mm vs. 3.03 ± 0.28mm, p<0.001) and after CPX (3.61 ± 0.44mm vs. 3.10 ± 0.37mm, p<0.001). Importantly, FMD was increased following CPX compared to BSL (16.86 ± 9.04% vs. 12.95 ± 7.03%, p=0.027). There was significant increase in peak flow velocity during RH before (135.28 ± 42.19cm/s vs. 79.19 ± 28.14cm/s, p=0.001) and after CPX (139.15 ± 41.07cm/s vs. 87.64 ± 21.23cm/s, p<0.001) (Table). Conclusion: The results of the current study indicate that arterial function is improved following acute aerobic exercise in elite female athletes with a chronic high volume training history. These findings deviate from the emerging literature suggesting chronic high volume training may be detrimental to cardiovascular function in the long term.
