Abstract Background University education in Australia and internationally involves teaching diverse students: in terms of age, life experience, previous degrees completed, and level of English competency. In Australia the Bachelors of Public Health (BPH) at The University of Wollongong, epidemiology is a core subject. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to design, critique and interpret studies that investigate why different populations experience different health outcomes. A student-centred learning strategy; Hybrid Team Based Learning and Personalised Education teaching strategy (HTBL-PE) was created to maximise academic success. Each phase has a distinct purpose based on learning theories (e.g. TBL, Bloom's taxonomy and Vygotsky). HTBL-PE aims to systematically build students abilities; strengthen self-confidence and belief, by teaching the way students learn and harnessing the capabilities of the team to strengthen the individual. Objectives HTBL-PE was evaluated in spring 2019 in the BPH, where their experiences at the beginning and end of semester were measured. Results In total 73 out of 84 enrolled students provided data at both time-points (87%). At the end of the semester, the vast majority of students indicated their interest in epidemiology had increased (93%), critical thinking had improved (92%), and confidence as independent learners had increased (86%). Outcomes did not differ significantly by gender or across learning styles. More than two thirds of students had already applied learnings from this subject in other settings (67%). Students' final mark for this subject was significantly higher than their Weighted Average Mark (WAM) prior to the semester (+17.4, p < 0.001). Average scores for the subject were > 84/100 with a < 0.5% failure rate. Conclusions HTBL-PE has positive learning outcomes; low failure rates, increased confidence in learning and themselves, increased interest in epidemiology and high overall scores in the subject. Key messages An effective new innovative teaching strategy resulted in a subject average score > 84/100 and <0.5% failure rate. The vast majority of students reported increased confidence as independent lifelong learners, critical thinking, confidence in epidemiology (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) and themselves.

ABSTRACT Background: In the review of curriculum matrices, the elaboration of learning strategies that combine theory and practice is extremely important, allowing the building of new concepts and learning methods by the students. Team-based learning (TBL) is growing in academic centers and refers to the pedagogic strategy grounded in constructivism. The aim of this research was to describe the application of TBL in a Public Health graduate program. Methods: TBL was applied in a class with 22 students in the discipline “Quantitative Research in Health” of the Public Health graduate program (Master degree) at the University of Fortaleza, Brazil, in 2016. The discipline was structured in 8 lessons, approaching the thematic of quantitative research. Before each class the students were required to study the contents at home, a test was done for each subject in the beginning of each class (individually and then in teams of 5 or 6 students) and then a brief review was performed by the professor, where the students could ask questions and solve any doubt. At the end of the semester an evaluation questionnaire was applied with objective questions and a qualitative survey. Results: The application of TBL was done in a class with 22 students of the Public health Master Program, aged 22 to 36 years, and 83.3% were female. The method was well received by the students. All the evaluations and discussions went on without any problem. There were some complaints about the requirement to study at home prior to the classes. Students’ evaluation of the discipline and the TBL method was satisfactory with answers’ average score of 4.7 (scale 0-5). The lowestscore was achieved by the question number 11 (4.3) about the students motivation for their study at home. The comparison with the evaluation of the previous semester (where a traditional method was applied) evidenced higher scores for the TBL method. Conclusions: The application of TBL was satisfactory and the main difficulty presented by students was the requirement for previous study at home. TBL was better evaluated than the traditional method.

This study aimed to develop and determine the advisability of chemical worksheets based on a scientific approach to improve students' critical thinking skills. The research method uses five design research steps simplified from Borg's and Gall's research and development. The subject of this research are science education program students at one university in Indonesia. Validation subject matter feasibility on the worksheets is 4.34 (best criteria), while the feasibility is 4.17 (best standards). A random assessment from several students is obtaining an average score of 98.67% (positive response). The research results conclude that a worksheet is advisable for students. Expert opinion conveys that using a scientific approach to the problems presented in the worksheet reveals stimulates, encourages, and improves critical thinking skills.

<p>Student’s critical thinking and their learning result depend on learning design and student’s activity.  Most students use their spare time with playing game.  Students are more challenged by the difficulty in playing game rather than facing the difficulty in understanding the lesson.  This phenomenon is the basic reason of the researchers to develop a game that has the essence of the subject matter, namely Chemistry Board Game (CBG) or we can call it with Al Chemist Knight.  This research aims to develop a suitable digital game based on android system. In this research media was used to improve the cognitive learning and critical thinking. It also has purpose to evaluate the response of learners in learning chemistry through alkane derived compound topic. The development of this game was adapted from the procedure of game development process in mobile 3D presentation.  The collection of evaluation data model applied was pre test and post test in trial class.  The result showed that in the pretest the learning result average was 34.35 with classical target of 5%.  While the posttest learning result average was 80.51 with  classical target of 85%. The  n-gain factor was 0.703.  Based on the result of the students questionnaire data analysis, 3.025 of students responded positively to the implementation of CBG.  A CBG media makes an assessment of critical thinking, in which the indicator of critical thinking which are focusing on questions get 3,1 point, giving arguments get 2.95, asking and answering questions get 3.0, making decision get 3.05, and the average score of critical thinking indicator is 3.025 which belongs to good category. Based on the students’ response questionnaire, we get the average score of 3.3 or 82.5% which is classified in good category.<br /><br /></p>

Resumen El Aprendizaje-Servicio (ApS) es un método de enseñanza que persigue la adquisición por los alumnos de conocimientos y competencias propias de su titulación mediante la realización de un servicio a la comunidad. La Comisión de Sostenibilidad de la Conferencia de Rectores (CRUE) propone su institucionalización como estrategia docente dentro del marco de Responsabilidad Social Universitaria. Con este objetivo se ha desarrollado el Proyecto de Innovación Docente “Microbiología y Salud Pública: enseñando a prevenir las enfermedades infecciosas a población desfavorecida” con alumnos de las asignaturas del área de microbiología clínica (2017-2018). En este trabajo se presentan dos de las actividades desarrolladas con la asociación Solidarios para el Desarrollo (atención a presidiarios) y la asociación Krecer (atención a adolescentes de familias vulnerables). A través del visionado de películas comerciales en las que aparece alguna enfermedad infecciosa, se debate el modo de contagio, los síntomas, o las posibles maneras de prevenir la enfermedad. Los resultados del proyecto se evaluaron mediante encuestas específicamente diseñadas para cada grupo implicado (alumnos, coordinadores de organizaciones y beneficiarios de la actividad). Los alumnos, además de reforzar conocimientos curriculares, adquirieron competencias transversales tales como coordinación, trabajo en equipo multidisciplinar, exposición en público, divulgación adaptada al grupo etario y social y el desarrollo de conciencia social. Organizaciones y beneficiarios destacaron el valor social del acompañamiento y la formación en salud pública, así como la actitud, dedicación y compromiso de los alumnos. Todos los implicados creen relevante incluir actividades ApS en las enseñanzas universitarias si bien los alumnos entienden que la participación debería ser voluntaria. Abstract Service-Learning (S-L) is a teaching methodology that pursues the acquisition of knowledge and skills by students specific to their degree by performing a service to the community. The Sustainability Commission of the Conference of Rectors (CRUE) proposes its institutionalization as a teaching strategy within the framework of University Social Responsibility. With this aim in mind, the Teaching Innovation Project entitled “Microbiology and Public Health: Teaching to prevent infectious diseases to disfavoured population” was carried out with students taking subjects in the area of clinical microbiology (2017-2018). This paper presents two of the activities developed with the Solidarios association (care for inmates) and the Krecer association (care for teenagers of vulnerable families). After watching commercial films in which an infectious disease appears, the means of contagion, the symptoms, or the possible ways of preventing the disease are discussed. The project’s results were evaluated through surveys specifically designed for each group involved (students, coordinators of organizations and beneficiaries of the activity). The students, in addition to reinforcing curricular knowledge, acquired transversal competences such as coordination, multidisciplinary teamwork, public speaking, divulgation adapted to specific social groups and ages, and the development of social consciousness. Organizations and beneficiaries highlighted the social value of accompaniment and of broadening knowledge in public health, as well as the attitude, dedication and commitment of the students. All those involved believe that it is important to include S-L activities in university education, although students consider that participation should be voluntary

ABSTRACT Objective: To identify the approach to sexually transmitted infections in the undergraduate nursing course at a federal university in southern Brazil. Method: Socio-historical research with a qualitative approach, and use of oral and documentary sources. Thirteen professors participated. Data collection took place between December 2018 and April 2019. Data analysis was thematic. Results: Three categories of analysis emerged: the teaching of sexually transmitted infections based on Brazilian public policies; sexually transmitted infections and their teaching strategy in an undergraduate nursing course; and the trajectory of approach to sexually transmitted infections in an undergraduate nursing course. The undergraduate course is based on public health and education policies, and the subject “Sexually Transmitted Infections” was created in the course at the end of the 1970s. The content is not mandatory, being associated with the area of public health and evidenced in the fields of practice and educational activities. Conclusion: The teaching of sexually transmitted infections has been in line with public health and education policies. It gains a greater teaching focus with the emergence of AIDS.

This research is based on the low learning outcome of mathematics students of grade VIII SMPN 4 Tambang.The purpose of this research is to improve the learning outcomes of mathematics through the application ofinquiry learning with CTL approach. This research was conducted in SMPN 4 Tambang with subject of classVIII-D students with 29 students. This classroom action research was started in early January 2017. Theresearch instrument consists of a teacher and student activity sheet instrument and a test of learning outcomes.Based on the results of research and discussion can be concluded that the strategy of inquiry learning with CTLapproach can improve student learning outcomes of mathematics on the subject matter of algebraic form inclass VIII-D SMPN 4 Tambang. On the basic score the number of students who reached the KKM as many as 14people (48.28%) with an average score of 58.79. In cycle I the number of students who reach the KKM of 19people (65.52%) with an average value of 65.69%. In cycle II the number reaching KKM is 25 people (86.21%).

This study aims to improve 3rd grade students’ science learning outcomes bylearning to use visual multimedia. This research method uses classroom actionresearch. The subject of this research was the third grade students of secondsemester of elementary school which conducted 30 students. Based on theresults of research by using visual media, it have been found that theimprovement learning outcome, seen from the initial average score before theaction of 3rd grade class students from 65.5 to 83.83. The results of this studyindicate that with the use of visual media can improve student learningoutcomes.

The objective of this research is to find out whether the application Preview, Read,Write, and Recite (PRWR) method improve student’s achievement in readingrecount text. This research applied classroom action research model. This studywas done in six meetings. The subject of this study was first year of SMAN 1Delitua. Primary data were collected by giving 20 questions of multiple-choicetest, the aspects contained in the tests focused on generic structure, main ideas,factual information, and Secondary data were collected by (interview, observationsheet, and questionnaire sheet. Based on analysis data, it was found that thestudent’s achievement improved. It could be seen from the comparison of result inthe orientation test and the cycle test I and II. There were only 9 students who hadpassed minimum criteria KKM in orientation test (75). The improvement showedthat in cycle I and II, based on the total average score it was 16 (42,4%) up to 26(78,7%) in cycle II, The secondary data gathered from interview, observationsheet, and questionnaire sheet, showed that students’ expression and enthusiasticalso improved. Thus, it was found that the applications of Preview, Read, Write,and Recite (PRWR) method in process of teaching improved students’achievement in reading recount text. It is suggested that English teachers applyPRWR method in teaching reading recount text.

Abstrak:Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji proses pembelajaran matematika danmenganalisis peningkatan prestasi belajar melalui permainan mistar bilangan. Metodepenelitian yang digunakanadalah penelitian tindakan kelas yang dilaksanakan sebanyak 2siklus. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas IV SD Negeri 2 Temengeng Kabupaten Blorapada semester 2 tahun pelajaran 2014/2015. Teknikanalisis yang digunakandeskriptifkomparatif, yaitu membandingkan data hasil antara prasiklus, siklus I, dan siklus II. Hasilpenelitian yang dilaksanakan 2 siklus menunjukkan bahwa proses pembelajaran matematikadengan menggunakan permainan mistar bilangan sangat menyenangkan siswa, sehinggaaktivitas pembelajaran meningkat dari 62,5 menjadi 84,5. Hasil belajar siswa juga meningkatditandai hasil siklus I nilai rata-rata kelas 60,48 dan ketuntasan mencapai 57,10%. Siklus IInilai rata-rata kelas 75,24 dan ketuntasan 85,70%. Simpulan penelitian ini adalah pembelajaranmatematika tentang penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan bulat melalui permainan mistarbilangan dapat meningkatkan aktivitas pembelajaran dan hasil belajar menunjukkan semuasiswa berminat dalam melaksanakan tugas dan memperoleh pengalaman yang menyenangkandalam permainan mistar bilangan. The method usedin thisresearch is class action which is done in2 cycles. The subject of the research are fourth gradestudents of Number 2 PublicElementary Schoolat Temengeng, Blora district in second semesterof the school year 2014/2015. The analysetechnicusedby comparingthe data from precycle,first cycle and second cycle. The results of the research that is done two cycles indicate thatmath learning process by using ruler numbers game can make the students feel pleased sothatlearning activities increase from 62.5 to 84.5. The results of student learning alsoincrease,it can be showed from the average score of the first cycle is 60.48 and the completeness scorereaches57.1%. The average score of thesecond cycle is 75.24 and the completeness scorereaches 85.7%. The conclusion of the research ismath learning about addition and deductionof integer through ruler numbers game can improve learning activity and the results of studentlearning show that all students are interested to obtain the task and get moreenjoyableexperience in using rulernumbers game.
