Abstract I describe lessons learned and the people and principles that influenced six decades of professional endeavours from graduate schools to ascending, often unexpectedly, the science and management ladder in National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) fisheries, which manages US living marine resources. For this woman chemist from India, the twists of fate and love of adventure presented amazing opportunities as well as challenges. My research on cetacean biosonar as well as on the impact of fossil fuel pollution on seafood safety and the health of marine organisms taught me the value of multidisciplinary approaches and unusual alliances. Transitioning into management, and eventually as the director of Northwest Fisheries Science Center, I learned the value of transparency and empathy while communicating our results to impacted communities, and the resolve to support the science regardless of the consequences. My advice to young professionals is that the journey should be as fulfilling as reaching the goalpost. At the twilight of my own journey, I networked with NOAA Fisheries and India’s marine science community to encourage scientist exchanges and training. My participation in University of Washington’s nature and human health programme confirms my conviction that conserving healthy ecosystems is a powerful and practical approach for people and our planet.

Four workshops and a webinar series were organized, with the aim of building capacity in countries to use Earth Observation Remote Sensing data to monitor forest cover changes and measure emissions reductions for REDD+ results-based payments. Webinars and workshops covered a variety of relevant tools and methods. The initiative was collaboratively organised by a number of Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) partner institutions with funding from the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). The collaborative approach with multiple partners proved to be efficient and was able to reach a large audience, particularly in the case of the webinars. However, the impact in terms of use of tools and training of others after the events was higher for the workshops. In addition, engagement with experts was higher from workshop participants. In terms of efficiency, webinars are significantly cheaper to organize. A hybrid approach might be considered for future initiatives; and, this study of the effectiveness of both in-person and online capacity building can guide the development of future initiatives, something that is particularly pertinent in a COVID-19 era.

Abstract In Switzerland, dual vocational education and training, which is practice- and employment-oriented, is the most frequently chosen path after compulsory education. The analysis of the training provided in the company by the people in charge of the apprentices questions the influences of the world of work on educational practices. The analysis of 80 semi-directive interviews highlights the tension between production and training, the different representations of apprentices, and the impact of these two elements on training practices.

Grenden Village has the highest number of households in Puger District. Generally, the habit of the people there in managing their waste are throwing it into rivers and the sea. This is the main cause of flooding in that area. One of the efforts to reduce the production of plastic waste is ecobrick. Ecobricks products are the basic material for making tables, chairs, and building materials because they have the strength to withstand loads according to the specified weight. The youth in Grenden village are agents of change who are the object of service to tackle plastic waste in their area. This service activity has 3 stages, (1) socialization regarding the impact of plastic waste disposal in the waters and the introduction of ecobricks, (2) training on making ecobricks, and (3) marketing the results of ecobricks into e-commerce. Participants were very enthusiastic about being directly involved in filling ecobricks with plastic waste and were very confident that they would be able to make more ecobricks in the future by collecting the plastic waste they produce. This positive response is a small step for good changes for the environment, especially in Grenden village.

AbstractWanadadi Village is located directly adjacent to the Mrica Reservoir. The impact of the reservoir building is a social shift from the people whose livelihoods were originally farmers to become laborers, and livestock. The main problem faced by farmers is the availability of feed, while what is faced by the manager of the Mrica Reservoir is sedimentation and growth of weeds. Eichhornia crasippes is a water weed that can interfere with water quality. Eichhornia crasippes prevention is one of the efforts in the management of resources and the aquatic environment to maintain the sustainability of wter microoganism. On the other hand this plant has several benefits and potential to be developed, namely as animal feed ingredients because the protein content is quite high, so it can be used as a substitute for manufacturing feed for ruminants and poultry. This activity aims to utilize water hyacinth into conservation efforts of reservoir waters and provide added value in the community, namely improving community skills in the manufacture of fermented animal feed to support goat farming. The method used in this community empowerment activity is PRA (Partcipatory Rural Appraisal), namely the active participation of all communities involved in this activity. Includes activities: counseling and training on the use of water hyacinth as goat feed silage material, Making goat experimental demonstration plots, mentoring and evaluation. It is hoped that this activity can provide benefits for the people of Wanadadi VillageKeywords: Goat Livestock; Eichhornia Crasippe; Silase; Mrica Reservoir.

Background: Ethical issues have been raised about using the psychological autopsy approach in the study of suicide. The impact on informants of control cases who participated in case-control psychological autopsy studies has not been investigated. Aims: (1) To investigate whether informants of suicide cases recruited by two approaches (coroners’ court and public mortuaries) respond differently to the initial contact by the research team. (2) To explore the reactions, reasons for participation, and comments of both the informants of suicide and control cases to psychological autopsy interviews. (3) To investigate the impact of the interviews on informants of suicide cases about a month after the interviews. Methods: A self-report questionnaire was used for the informants of both suicide and control cases. Telephone follow-up interviews were conducted with the informants of suicide cases. Results: The majority of the informants of suicide cases, regardless of the initial route of contact, as well as the control cases were positive about being approached to take part in the study. A minority of informants of suicide and control cases found the experience of talking about their family member to be more upsetting than expected. The telephone follow-up interviews showed that none of the informants of suicide cases reported being distressed by the psychological autopsy interviews. Limitations: The acceptance rate for our original psychological autopsy study was modest. Conclusions: The findings of this study are useful for future participants and researchers in measuring the potential benefits and risks of participating in similar sensitive research. Psychological autopsy interviews may be utilized as an active engagement approach to reach out to the people bereaved by suicide, especially in places where the postvention work is underdeveloped.
