Background. Knowledge regarding the relationship between writing kinetics and the difference among writing tasks is limited. Purpose. This study examined the differences in handwriting performance when doing tasks with different levels of challenge from both temporal and kinetic perspectives among children in four different age groups. Method. The cross-sectional design introduced a force-acquisition pen to detect differences of pen grip and writing kinetics among 170 school-age children doing writing tasks at different difficulty levels. Data were obtained on the force information of the digits and pen tip and the kinetic parameters to examine the coordination-and-control mechanism between the digits and pen. Statistical analyzes were carried out to indicate the differences in writing performance among groups and tasks. Findings. Statistical differences in the pen-grip forces, force fluctuation, and force ratio between grip and pen-tip forces were found when performing different writing tasks and among different age groups. Implications. The study provides an alternative method to explore how writing performance among school-age children can vary according to the difficulty of the writing tasks.

Medical students are vulnerable to depression and anxiety due to the nature of their academic life. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms among medical students and the association between religious coping, religiosity and socio-demographic factors with anxiety and depressive symptoms. A cross sectional design was used for this study. Scales used were the Malay version of the Duke Religious Index (DUREL-M), the Malay version of the Brief Religious Coping Scale (Brief RCOPE) and the Malay version Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS-M). 622 students participated in this study. They scored moderately on the organized (mean: 3.51) and non-organized religious (mean: 3.85) subscales of the DUREL, but had high intrinsic religiosity (mean: 12.18). The prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms were 4.7% and 17.4% respectively, which is lower than local as well as international data. Islam, negative religious coping and the presence of depressive symptoms were significantly associated with anxiety symptoms. Only the presence of anxiety symptoms was significantly associated with depressive symptoms. Negative religious coping, rather than positive religious coping, has significant association with depressive and anxiety symptoms. Redirecting focus towards negative religious coping is imperative to boost mental health outcomes among medical students.

Hemodialysis is currently applied as a routine treatment that is widely used by patients with chronic kidney failure, though complications still occur during dialysis. Self-regulation is a kind of theoretical model that represents the effect of perceived disease on behavior and health-related consequences. There is a process of problem representation, coping and appraisal or assessment of coping success involved in self-regulation. This study aimed to determine the correlation between self-regulation theory constructs and the incidence of intradialytic complications during hemodialysis. This was a descriptive analytic study with cross-sectional design. Consecutive sampling resulted in 42 respondents. Logistic regression results obtained disease representation variable with timeline (p=0.122; OR=0.412) and control (p=0.068; OR=0.582) sub-variables; as well as coping variable with Problem-focused (p=0.219; OR=0.912) and emotion-focused (p=0.036; OR=0.3) sub-variables. Intradialytic complications are complex conditions that involve many factors, but the patient's psychological adaptation process also deserves to be considered in developing self-regulation among hemodialysis patients. It is necessary to consider the provision of health education based on the constructs of this self-regulation theory, especially on variables/factors that have a correlation with the incidence of intradialytic complications in order to improve self-management among hemodialysis patients to get a better life.
