Purpose: We used gatekeeping theory to frame our examination of whether and when educators with superintendent certification become superintendents, and how their likelihood of making that transition is influenced by race, sex, and other characteristics. Furthermore, we sought to identify variation in career pathways to the superintendency. Data and Method: We analyzed 26,071 observations of 4,813 unique individuals, representing the entire population of Texas public school educators who obtained their first superintendent certificate between the 2000-2001 and 2014-2015 school years. We constructed alluvial diagrams to visualize these educators’ career pathways. In addition to compiling a life table and visual displays of hazard, we used a discrete-time hazard model to control for individual and contextual characteristics associated with transitions into the superintendency. Findings: Educators are most likely to enter the superintendency in the academic year immediately following that in which they obtained the requisite certification. Furthermore, pathways to the superintendency differ greatly based on educator sex and race, as well as the level and locale employment setting. Finally, we determined that age, experience, education, level of employment, and sex all have statistically significant impacts on the likelihood of becoming a superintendent. Implications for Research and Practice: We discuss the role that researchers must play in coordinating with practitioners to ensure more equitable opportunity for aspiring superintendents. We also emphasize the important role that preparation programs play in preparing candidates for the job market. Finally, we ponder further expansions of similar presuperintendency research, as well as more robust applications of alluvial diagrams.

Contrary to the benefits and opportunities mobile learning may provide, “Teacher preparation programs are often devoid of opportunities to teach with mobiles” (Herro, Kiger, & Owens, 2013, p. 31). Educators need to understand the pedagogical affordances and limitations of mobile technology tools and develop materials and lessons based on frameworks or models grounded in research and practice. Work arrangements are evolving rapidly throughout the world. Coupled with rapid changes in jobs and the movement to a global labor market, this is creating new career pathways. This chapter examines changes in work arrangements and how these changes are impacting career pathways. Major forces driving transformations in work arrangements and career pathways are addressed, and differences by country, global geographic region, and occupational area in the prevalence of alternative and independent work arrangements are described. Positive and negative aspects of changes in work arrangements are delineated, and the shifting focus of individual careers is discussed. The chapter also explores how individuals and organizations can shape career pathways in the new work environment. The implications of these changes for future research and practice are discussed.

In addition to providing financial means, work offers an opportunity for individuals to experience meaning and purpose. Meaningful work, defined in this chapter as work that is worthwhile and personally significant, is linked to job satisfaction, work motivation, and psychological well-being. Several vocational psychology theories of career development, along with research on work as a calling and the protean career orientation, have addressed factors that likely influence meaning and purpose in work, either directly or indirectly. This chapter examines the opportunities for career pathways programs and professionals for promoting purpose and meaning in work over the course of a career. Specific strategies related to career choice, choice implementation, career engagement and maintenance/management, as well as retirement, bridge employment, and encore careers are addressed. Future directions for research and practice are also discussed.

Research purpose: Managers, when applying their leadership styles, are affected by some of their own traits. This article intends to compare the leadership styles of the managers of Zabol University of Medical Sciences with respect to Hersey and Blanchard model that was based on their biographical characteristics.Research design, approach and method: The research methodology is descriptive-causal and comparative. The data were collected from 300 individuals (124 female and 176 male participants).Main findings: No significant difference was observed between the directive, persuasive, participative and delegative leadership styles of male and female managers. However, there was a significant difference between the mean of the directive, persuasive, participative and delegative leadership styles of managers, considering their work experience, education level and field of study.Research limitations: The conservative atmosphere in university environments may affect the manager’s responses to the questionnaire; therefore, in the generalisation of the results, this issue should be taken into account.Practical implications: It is recommended to hold in-service courses for managers who have a lower education level or less work experience or have been graduated from the fields of study other than the Management major. It is also suggested to pay attention to the managers’ fields of study and managerial experiences at the time of employment.Contribution: This study enhances the quality of managers’ leadership style and consequently increases the productivity in university environments.

The objective of this text is to bring to discussion the Law 13.415/2017 and its implications in the high school curriculum of art education (music, dance and drama), more specifically the articles 26 and 36 directly related to this education level. The teaching of arts in the last decade has achieved great advances regarding specific contents that better suits the job market, with the inclusion of music as a mandatory component in the curriculum matrix, expansion of full-time schools and the creation of Federal Institutes through Law 11.892 / 2008. However, the law 13.415/2017 points to a drawback in these achievements, maximizing some aspects in a way, but reducing in others. While extending the time of the student in the classroom with full-time high school classes, the law does not provide a proper structure for the additional demands that follow. On the contrary, the law may be interpreted as considering certain disciplines “superfluous”, causing a rupture in the educational process from elementary school to high school. This text is intended to bring some specific points for reflection, seeking to create a dialogue between excerpts of LDB 9394/96 and 13.415/2017 and authors that study the high school curriculum, and thus allowing an exchange of information that may bring a clear view of the implications of such reforms.

Utilization of the dryland farming resources through the integration of the farming and livestock is an alternative to improve the farmer income. This study aimed to analyze the effect of variables on the utilization of the dryland and analyze the effect of those variables on the farmer’s motivation in conducting the integration of farming and livestock simultaneously and partially in Gunung Malang Village, Pringgabaya District. There were 82 farmers from 11 farmer institutional group in Gunung Malang Village, Pringgabaya District, East Lombok Regency involved in this study. This study was employed a multiple regression analysis to processed the data. Results showed that the livestock, value-added to the livestock, land-area, farming experience, education level, and the number of the family member variable simultaneously affected the farmer motivation in implementing the farming and livestock integration in Gunung Malang Village. While the livestock capital, farming experience, and the number of the family member variable partially affected the farmer motivation in implementing the farming and livestock integration. The land-area and educational level didn’t contribute significantly to the implementation of farming and livestock integration in Gunung Malang Village.

The country of Haiti has faced chronic food insecurity for decades. Increasing domestic food production has been identified as a key part of the solution, but this requires building human capacity, especially related to agricultural extension and research. Haiti’s agricultural universities can be key players in this process. The purpose of this study was to explore the self-perceived readiness of Haitian agricultural university students to enter the workforce. Results revealed students had a wide variety of career aspirations and appreciated the breadth of the agronomy engineer degree. Students also expressed favorable opinions about their preparedness for the job market but felt pessimistic about finding a job. Students valued the importance of research and felt prepared to lead a research project. Finally, students thought all 17 Global Forum for Rural Advisory Services (GFRAS) New Extensionist competency areas were important. Recommendations for additional research and practice are provided. The purpose of the current study is to investigate the use of learning strategies by students enrolled at the education faculty pedagogical formation program in their education life in relation to some variables such as gender, age, mother and father’s education level and graduated undergraduate program. The study group of the current research is comprised of a total of 217 students attending the pedagogical formation certificate program in the Education Faculty of Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University in the 2015-2016 academic year. In order to determine the students’ learning strategies, the 32-item Learning Strategies Scale developed by Açıkgöz (1996) and revised by Güvenç (2009) was used. In the analysis of the collected data, SPSS 24 program package was employed and frequencies, percentages, arithmetic means, t-test ve Kruskal Wallis test were used. It was concluded that the students’ learning strategies do not vary significantly depending on gender, age, mother and father’s education level and the undergraduate program they graduated from.

Career decision-making difficulties are the challenges encountered by individuals before, during, or after choosing one’s career. This study tested the associations between career decision-making difficulties and depression, anxiety, and stress, considering the career decision status of participants. Students in a precollege preparatory program filled out questionnaires at the beginning and near the end of the academic year ( N = 137). The correlations between career decision-making difficulties, as measured by the Career Decision-Making Difficulties, and negative emotional states measured by the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales, were positive at both administrations ( r T1 = .24, r T2 = .38). Using a multivariate analysis of variance, we have found that those who became more decided had fewer career decision-making difficulties ( d = 1.26). The changes in career decision status were not associated with either depression, anxiety, or stress. However, overall negative emotions intensified among students who were still undecided at the end of the year ( d = 0.72). Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Narcissistic Personality Levels of the students of the Faculty of Education and the students of the Faculty of Sports Sciences in terms of age, gender, active sports doing, department, graduated high school, mother education level, father education level, mother profession and father profession variables have been examined in this study. A total of 364 university students enrolled in the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Sports Sciences in Gazi University, Hacettepe University and Ankara University, in the academic year 2017-2018 has constituted the research group. Descriptive statistics on narcissistic personality scores; analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA, independent sample t-test) to compare average scores in unrelated measures, the Tukey test to determine which groups had significant differences, have been used. According to the results of the research, the students of the Faculty of Sports Sciences showed more narcissistic personality tendency than the students of the Faculty of Education.
