The paper presents data of a study on the effectiveness of an experimental school course in biology based on the principles of Davydov—Elkonin developmental learning in comparison with traditional courses. The study involved 395 students of 5th, 6th, and 9th classes. The results show that children can be more successful at achieving not only subject, but also metasubject educational outcomes like reading literacy, ability to work with signs, symbols and models etc, which are all required by the federal state education standard, if the content of education is changed in such a way that the integral system of key concepts becomes the subject matter, presented not as a means of describing an object, but rather as a basis for its transformation by students. When learning is organised that way, it provides an opportunity for primary school students with underdeveloped reading skills to compensate for the lack of reading literacy, although it will still be hard for them to master subject concepts successfully enough.

The issue of preparing non-linguistic faculty students for intercultural interaction in the context of the subject-language integrated environment is quite a topical one, and theory and practice of higher education have accumulated considerable experience in this process. However, we have to admit that in modern pedagogical science no research has been so far dedicated either to the development of effective and logical system of preparing non-linguistic faculty students for intercultural interaction, or to the identification of optimal conditions for the functioning of such system. The statements above convinced us in the need to develop the respective proprietary system and pedagogical conditions, which would meet the peculiarities of the given age of students, of the requirements of the Federal State Education Standards of higher education, and of the requirements to the personality of the modern world reflected in national and international documents.

The labor market modernization and the transition to the digital economy have led to a revision of the requirements for a contemporary specialist, who, in addition to professional competencies, possesses a broad range of universal skills and personal qualities. The development of leadership skills can become a universal pedagogical basis for implementing the concept of continuous nationally oriented independent education at all stages starting from the preparation of applicants, secondary vocational education, bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, to postgraduate studies, including advanced training and additional education. The study aimed to identify efficient educational technologies aimed at forming universal competencies in the framework of disciplines “Foreign Language” and “Business Foreign Language” at various stages of training, both in academic and extracurricular activities. The basis for identifying efficient educational technologies was theoretical methods (literature analysis (active teaching methods, and mixed learning technologies), documentation analysis (Federal State Education Standard, FSES 3+++)), as well as empirical methods (observation, study, and generalization). The practical significance of the work consists in the presented model of forming universal competencies, which can be considered as a component of the professional education of a future graduate of a nonlinguistic university. The universal competencies formed within the framework of the disciplines “Foreign Language” and “Business Foreign Language” will allow the graduate to become a competitive specialist in the international labor market.
