Abstract The impact of the transformation of economic activities and sharp weather and climate changes on the quality of life in rural settlements on peatlands in the Moscow region was analyzed. As theoretical background, an analysis of various interpretations of the concept of the quality of life was carried out, including in the context of sustainable development. The impact of economic and environmental factors of the quality of life in rural settlements on peatlands is considered with respect to their location in the zone of attraction of Moscow. It was concluded that the development of industrialization in the region led to population decline and to increase in the anthropogenic load. This critically increased the vulnerability of peatlands to fluctuations in weather and climate conditions and several times led to serious environmental disasters. At the same time, location in the zone of attraction of Moscow opens up opportunities for improving the quality of life associated with the development of post-industrial recreational use.

This paper presents a novel application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to analyze the impact of oil price changes on the efficiency of banks. Factors that affect the efficiency of banks have been of interest to researchers in various geographical regions. With a special focus on oil price changes, we investigate the determinants of bank efficiency in the Middle Eastern Oil-Exporting (MEOE) countries where macro-financial conditions are substantially affected by swings in oil prices. Our analysis consists of two stages: (i) measuring the efficiency scores of banks using the Semi-Oriented Radial Measure (SORM) DEA model, (ii) investigating the impact of alternative indicators of oil prices on the estimated efficiency scores after controlling for key bank-specific and country-specific variables. The analysis is based on an un-balanced panel data of banks operating in the Middle Eastern Oil-Exporting countries over the period of 2001–2011. Our findings reveal that oil price changes affect the efficiency of banks in the MEOE countries through both direct and indirect channels. In addition, we find that Islamic banks in the region are less responsive to oil price changes than commercial and investment banks.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of trends in retail loan portfolio on the consumption and economic growth of Macedonia. The consumption of population is one of the components of GDP, and one of its drivers is the retail credit activity. On macroeconomic level, there is wide consensus among researchers that credit activity and quality of portfolio is driven by GDP movements, unemployment ratio and indebtedness of population. Also, vice verse the activities in retail segment influence on consumption and indirectly on GDP. So these two linkages enhance between and can result in negative spiral. Negative movements in GDP influence on the quality of portfolio and higher NPL ratio. And higher NPL ratio results in further decrease in credit activity and has additional negative impact on GDP. Because of that is important to determine the causes of credit activity in this segment. The retail portfolio in the last 4 years in Macedonian banking sector is growing continuously, opposite of other Balkan countries. That is why is important to analyze the past growth of retail portfolio and to determine possible weaknesses because of its future impact on GDP. One of the most important drivers that determine the future credit growth is the quality of retail credit portfolio in the moment. Another important aspect for the portfolio trend will be the interest rate environment. There is clear empirical evidence that low interest environment triggers greater credit activity and vice versa. Another important aspect of the credit qrowth, is the maturity of the retail credit portfolio as a way to decrease the monthly installments and to accumulate greater risk on longer term. Special focus of this paper will be the trend in retail loan portfolio after 2008, when the banking system of Macedonia felt the impact from financial crisis. The activities that were taken by the banking sector then can be some guidelines for future crisis. The retail credit growth will be analyzed by products in order better to understand bank strategies and reasons that contributed for such a growth. Also, the analyze of NPL ratio by product will give answer whether the quality of portfolio by products was one of the key drivers for credit activity.

Abstract The development of the economy’s tourism sector is one of the priority tasks set by the leadership of the Krasnodar Territory and Russian Federation. Thus, the construction of a model of the impact of tourist flows on the sustainability of the destination is very relevant. The authors developed a simulation model of the impact of tourist flows on the sustainable development of destination. The weighted net savings indicator was used as a measure of sustainability. This model can be further used in predicting the development of the studied sector of the economy. Using the developed tool for medium- and long-term planning will provide additional data to decision makers, reducing uncertainty, and thus improving the quality of management. The accuracy of the model is based entirely on publicly available statistics and expert assessments.

Moving marketing strategies, which are changed through digital channels, into the social media environment, has led to changes in customer preferences in the tourism sector and is affected by the comments made in social media. Despite the fact that numerous studies have examined the impact of online customer comments on purchasing behaviour, most of these studies have used descriptive statistics and have ignored the empirical estimations. This study is aimed at examining the influence of the criteria obtained by content analysis on the star ratings given to the hotels based on the comments about the hotel on the TripAdvisor site. In this context, Mediterranean region hotels, which hold an important place in the tourism sector of Turkey, have been viewed, and the 25 hotels with the highest number of comments on the TripAdvisor site were selected, and 9000 comments from these hotels as well as the topic of the study were analysed with panel data methodology. As a result of the analyses made, it was determined that the criteria of the location and the accessibility of the hotels, the food and beverage concept presented by the hotels, the quality of the personnel–service, the cleaning elements, and the entertainment–animation programs were influential on the star ratings given to the hotels. It was also found that the architectural structure of the hotels and the other customers’ recommendation criteria are less important than the star ratings given to the hotel when compared to other specified criteria.

Natural disasters have a catastrophic impact on the lives of humans, interrupting their social and economic activities to a great extent. Communities that are located in high-risk regions encounter greater challenges in developing a resilient and sustainable tourism economy (Tsai et. al., 2016). The past examples of tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions all over the world have shown that there are two sides of the issue in terms of tourism sector. First, the devastating effects of the natural disaster slow down the tourism sector like all other activities in a particular destination. On the other hand, the natural disasters are capable of fostering the strong feelings of solidarity (Goodwin, 2005), luring the global interest to the region for further economic opportunities, including tourism. The aim of this manuscript is to investigate the influence of drawbacks and possible positive impacts of natural disasters on tourism activities and to model them in a proper manner. The paper will start with a body of literature on the impact of natural disasters on the tourism industry based on the previous studies. The study will be dealing with the question how natural disasters  have an impact on tourism through economic aspects, destination image and the degree of community activity. The methodology will be literature review and critical evaluation of the findings. Finally, a model will be suggested in order to provide a quantitative analysis for the natural disasters, including the possible related economic and social variables.

In the current economic situation, the solution to the problems of diversification of mining regions is relevant not only in terms of economic outcome, but also the need to change the ecological situation in industrial regions towards its improvement. Diversification of the region’s economy is associated with the idea of expanding the range of economic activities and considered as a mechanism to reduce risks and mono-dependence of the regional economy. The study suggests that tourism could become one of the areas of diversification and greening of the mining region economy by the example of the Kemerovo region. The structure of the GRP and individual indicators characterizing the state of the tourism sector were analyzed to assess the impact of tourism on the diversification of the economy of the Kemerovo region. Despite the fact that the total share of the tourism sector has changed slightly over the 5 years, its multiplier effect has a positive impact on the state of the service sector and the economy of the entire region. It was confirmed by the results of the analysis. The optimistic scenario for the development of the Kemerovo region determines the large role of tourism in the diversification and greening of the region’s economy. The implementation of the conservative scenario that provides the supportive development of traditional sectors, does not exclude opportunities for the development of tourism, which will ensure the effective and long-term sustainable development of the Kuzbass.
