Universities have long recognized the need to create pathways for ideas and new technologies to advance from academic labs to market; however, the decentralized and haphazard nature of American innovation means that some discoveries may be neglected. In order to more effectively address the issues with innovation, a research team led by Steven Currall produced a new framework in the book Organized Innovation: A Blueprint for Renewing America's Prosperity. Because of the current drive of universities to increase innovation, economic development, and corporate partnerships, we thought it was timely to revisit this book and offer commentary on its lessons for navigating these demands.

The subject of the research is the introduction of artificial intelligence as a technological innovation into the Russian economic development. The relevance of the problem is due to the fact that the Russian market of artificial intelligence is still in the infancy and the necessity to bridge the current technological gap between Russia and the leading economies of the world is coming to the forefront. The financial sector, the manufacturing industry and the retail trade are the drivers of the artificial intelligence development. However, company managers in Russia are not prepared for the practical application of expensive artificial intelligence technologies. Under these circumstances, the challenge is to develop measures to support high-tech projects of small and medium-sized businesses, given that the technological innovation considered can accelerate the development of the Russian economy in the energy sector fully or partially controlled by the government as well as in the military-industrial complex and the judicial system.The purposes of the research were to examine the current state of technological innovations in the field of artificial intelligence in the leading countries and Russia and develop proposals for improving the AI application in the Russian practices.The paper concludes that the artificial intelligence is a breakthrough technology with a great application potential. Active promotion of the artificial intelligence in companies significantly increases their efficiency, competitiveness, develops industry markets, stimulates introduction of new technologies, improves product quality and scales up manufacturing. In general, the artificial intelligence gives a new impetus to the development of Russia and facilitates its entry into the five largest world’s economies.

In this paper, the prototype of a circular Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) built in the laboratories of FN SpA Nuove Tecnologie e Servizi Avanzati is analyzed using a tridimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model. The prototype is the result of FN and Politecnico di Torino activities developed for the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) within the framework of Ministry of Economic Development, MSE-ENEA. This model considers heat, mass and current transfer as well as chemical and electrochemical reactions. The results show that some inhomogeneous distributions in the reactants, causing non-optimal use of the reactant surfaces. An effective way to improve the distribution in current density consists in tracing tree shaped channels on the surface onto the distribution porous medium. In this paper Y shaped channels are adopted to improve the distribution of gas within the fuel cell and consequently to enhance the performance of the original design of the fuel cell. In addition, the configuration of the outlet of the anodic compartment is also investigated in order to further increase the performance of the fuel cell. The geometrical parameter identifying the topology of distribution channels are chosen accordingly to the constructal theory. The results show that significant improvements can be achieved. Power density is increased of about 6% when the tree-shaped channel is adopted. If a double anodic inlet is also considered the enhancement in the power density is of about 11% with respect to the initial configuration.

AbstractDifferent theories have been posited that try to explain the decision-making process of smallholders especially regarding the adoption of new technologies or new agricultural techniques. The objective of this paper is to review and re-assess the dominant household production theories to explain the decision making of smallholders practicing conservation agriculture (CA) in the southern, eastern, and central provinces of Zambia. It also discusses the potential role of CA toward economic development. It finds that the CA smallholders studied did not aim to maximize profits but tried to secure household consumption from their own production before any other considerations in risky and uncertain environments. Their response to economic incentives was contingent on minimizing risks associated with securing a minimum level of livelihood and investing into local forms of insurance. This paper concludes that the ability for CA to contribute to rural livelihoods and economic development would depend on how adequately the factors that hinder smallholder agricultural development in general are addressed.

The Arctic is the richest and at the same time the most difficult region to develop in the world. Exploration and exploitation of its deposits are inevitable for Russia and mankind as a whole. The Arctic region is characterized by extreme nature-climatic conditions, with a rather low level of economic development and remoteness from industrial centers, a low level or lack of any infrastructure as well as by instability of the ecological system to anthropogenic impact and a long recovery period. Since the potential of the resources currently being developed will be exhausted within several decades, and the world economies are not yet ready for a full transition to alternative energy resources, it is necessary to search for and develop new hydrocarbon reserves that determines the relevance of the study.The aim of the study is to identify the main problems arising when exploiting hydrocarbons in the Arctic region. The set of problems identified predetermines an integrated approach to their solutions. In this case, it is about reforming legislation, increasing funding, and attracting new participants in the international cooperation. Since the export of oil and gas is traditional for the Russian Federation, exploitation of hydrocarbons in the region is a prerequisite for the further economic development of the country. A state policy aimed at development and improvement of new technologies, reducing environmental risks, and deep scientific research of the Arctic, is needed. The method of expert assessment was used, which is applied for solving complex tasks with lack of information, and impossibility of mathematical formalization of the solution process. The basis for the application of this method is the possibility and ability of experts to assess the importance of the problem under study and development prospects for a certain research direction. The expert assessments were highlighted during the study and analysis of the literature.

Macroeconomic dynamics is in the focus of attention of the scientific community due to the fact that it characterizes the key trends in the development of the national economy. The basic indicator in the system of national accounts is the gross domestic product (GDP), which in general form is the aggregate value of all goods and services produced within the national economy. GDP is widely used in the analysis of economic growth trends. Economic growth, creating conditions for it – the most important goal of economic development, both within the framework of ensuring the economic security of the entire national economy and at the level of an individual enterprise. Nowadays, economic development is characterized by an accelerated rate of scientific and technological progress: new technologies and approaches are being created that have higher efficiency. From a microeconomic point of view, the main factors of production are labor, capital and information. Fixed capital investments (buildings, structures, machinery and equipment) are a key instrument for renewing fixed assets. Investment activity is the process of renewing the capital of an enterprise as a result of modernizing its technical and technological base, which ensures its economic security. Investments, along with government spending, are key drivers of economic growth. As a result, we can confidently assert the high importance of investment activities, both throughout the country and at the level of individual economic entities, as well as their economic independence. The paper shows the ways to intensify economic growth and intensify investment activities in order to ensure the economic security of the Russian Federation.

- The article provides a general picture in which to frame the modernization that the Spanish cities underwent between the late nineteenth century and the Civil War, and its consequences on the form of the development of several second industrialization infrastructures. The objective is to present a succinct global synthesis on the first third of the twentieth century, a period in which a remarkable take-off of the Spanish urbanmetropolitan phenomenon took place, as a result of a socio-economic development that stimulated the building of several urban equipment. The paper aims at providing a framework to better understand some case studies, which have been applied to the analysis of the financing of municipal treasuries, the influence of trams on urban growth and morphology, the location of water supply companies and their impact, the construction of the telephone network, and the repercussions of the transformation in demographic patterns on the national urban system. In conclusion, the rhythm of implementation of new technologies did not involve any significant delay as to other European countries, which lets us question traditional interpretations of the alleged Spanish failure in terms of modernization during those.

When A.R. Fontaine arrived in Tonkin in 1886, he was quick to see the potential of applying new technologies to a traditional industry, and to grasp the importance of state protection for the success of his fledgling enterprise. From modest origins, he built a business empire that included everything from distilleries to coal mines to bicycle factories. Fontaine’s was one of the colonial conglomerates that played a central role in the economy’s “Indochinese moment,” introducing new technologies and familiarizing Indochinese with new ways of working, consuming and being. However, the downturn that began in Indochina in 1928 exposed the weakness of many of these enterprise groups. When A.R. Fontaine was forced to step down as President of the SFDIC in 1932, it signified the start of a new era of economic development directed not from Hanoi or Saigon, but rather from Paris.

AbstractNanotechnologies constitute one of the most innovative processes of production, and their products already reach all economic sectors. In view of their potential to boost economic development and competitiveness, governments have declared them areas of priority or strategic interest.In the framework of studies that deal with the evaluation of benefits, impacts, and harmful effects of new technologies, this article analyses the potential barriers to an inclusive development of nanotechnologies to improve the living conditions of broad sectors of the population. It is concluded that the discussion on disruptive technologies leaves aside the socio-economic and political context in which nanotechnologies are developed. It is in this context that the barriers to a more inclusive development aimed at improving the living conditions of the population must be sought. But, even if this target is not met, new technologies can result in market and competitive advantages, although deepening the gap in social inequality.The text is divided into two sections. In the first, the peculiarities of nanotechnologies are explained, allowing their identification as a new form of disruptive production. In the second, an analysis of the context in which nanotechnologies develop as well as their potential social implications is provided.

This article considers the creation of an exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand. Specifically, this project was a collaborative endeavour between the School of Design at Victoria University of Wellington and the National Library, aimed at utilising new technologies and traditional archival research to bring forgotten and rarely accessed data back to life in a public exhibition. From the outset this project sought to combine the best of both new educational technologies (augmented reality) with tactile, physical materials (created using laser cutting and 3D printing) that the public could handle and use in a way that would break down the barriers between exhibition objects and resurrected archival data. The result was an interactive exhibition focused upon the emergence of Wellington as a city and the growth of its waterfront over the last century and a half. The design research project took place between November 2016 and February 2017 and resulted in a project exhibition open to the public running from May 2017 to February 2018. The principle supervisors were Leon Gurevitch and Tim Miller with a research team of three research assistants (Stefan Peacock, Alasdair Tarry and Louis Elwood­Leach).

The article examines the state and current trends in the social development of the village as a determinant of the mechanism for managing its economic development. His main problems were identified, including those related to demographic processes, migration, availability of jobs, welfare, accessibility to social infrastructure services. The necessity of elaboration and implementation of an innovative model of social development of the village is proved, which implies application of an integrated approach to the solution of existing problems and demands the implementation of transformations in the system and structure of the mechanisms of state regulation by this process both at the central and local levels. Strategic directions concerning overcoming of negative tendencies of social development of village in the context of formation of innovative economy are systematized. In our opinion, strategic directions of further social development of the village should be as following: Not only the creation of new jobs, but places that are especially attractive to young people. Among the latter, there may be rural green, ecological and agro-tourism, the development of which contributes to the creation of new jobs, the preservation of ecological balance, and the restoration of natural and social resources. After all, in order to provide these types of tourism, it is necessary to build a boarding house, a micro-hotel for tourists in a village, which means to activate the construction industry, retail trade, and service life. The formation of the public opinion on the importance and prestige of agrarian labour by guaranteeing an effective system of its social motivation and protection. The comprehensive assistance to the restoration and further development of the social infrastructure of the village, in particular such important areas as: cultural and domestic services, medical care, construction of well-organized and equipped housing. The overcoming of disproportions at the level of service of rural residents. It should be promoted by increasing the solvent demand of the population for social humanitarian services, which necessitates the expansion of the industrial segment of the economy in the village. The enhancement of authorities’ power and the capacity of communities to carry out the process of controlling and stimulating rational resource use in agricultural enterprises of all forms of ownership, attracting investment in the industrial, social and environmental spheres of rural territories. That is, new technologies, new non-standard forms of management, new approaches to the organization of local income distribution and social services must come from the city to the village. The observance of the minimum funding for rural development (at least 1% of GDP). The creation of the fund for support of the social development of the village at the expense of deductions of economic entities of all forms of the ownership in the amount of 1.5% of their income. The introduction of preferential taxation for newly created enterprises in the village in the case of the innovative nature of their production activities, provision of socially necessary services or the implementation of infrastructural provision of these territories, etc.
