Honey is one of the natural treatments with antibacterial effects such as hydrogen peroxide, low pH and short water activity that may inhibit bacterial growth. This study aimed to determine the activity of honey as antibacterial to bacteria Escherichia coli. Antibacterial activity test was done in vitro through diffusion method by using disk disc in MHA media then measuring the diameter of a clear zone that inhibition zone form growth of Escherichia coli bacteria and scaled it millimetre unit. This research was done in the laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Kristen Indonesia. The concentrations used are 10%, 30%, 50%, 70%, 100% by using sterile equates as honey diluents. The control used was chloramphenicol, the results obtained at a concentration of 10% with a zone of 7.6 mm inhibition of honey had been able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria, and the optimum concentration was 100% with a zone of 24.5 mm. This test showed that natural honey could inhibit bacteria, which conclude that honey might be used as alternative medicine in society. Keywords: Antibacterial effect, Escherichia coli, honey

Antibacterial is a compound that can inhibit the growth of bacteria that can be used for the treatment of infections in humans. One of the bacteria that can cause interference with the system is the Escherichia coli bacteria, where the Escherichia coli bacteria is widely spread around us. The spread of the Escherichia coli bacteria can occur by direct contact (shaking hands, touching). Then passed on by mouth. Leunca leaves have chemical contents including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tanins. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Leunca's leaf extract (Solanum nigrum) has antibacterial effects against the inhibitory power of Escherichia coli bacteria with a concentration of 50 mg/ml, 100 mg/ml, 150 mg/ml, 200 mg/ml, 250 mg/ml. The method of this study was the sample of Leunca leaf obtained from West Lumban Rau Village, Habinsaran Subdistrict, Toba Samosir Regency. Sample preparation was done by making thick extract with the maceration method. An anti-bacterial effectiveness test is done by the disk diffusion method. The results showed Leunca's leaf extract containing alkaloid compounds, flavonoids, saponins, tannins. As well as having antibacterial effectiveness against the inhibition of Escherichia coli bacteria. Average inhibition zone area concentration of 50 mg/ml = 6.1 mm, concentration of 100 mg/ml = 7.3, concentration of 150 mg/ml = 8.8 mm, concentration of 200 mg/ml = 10.8 mm, concentration of 250 mg/ml = 12.6 mm. Conclusion: Leunca (Solanum nigrum) Leaf Extract has antibacterial effects against the inhibitory power of Escherichia coli bacteria with a strong category.

AbstrakTumbuhan salam (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp.) telah dikenal sejak dahulu untuk mengobati berbagai penyakit. Bagian tumbuhan yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai obat selain daun adalah bagian kulit batang. Beberapa penelitian yang telah dilakukan terbukti bahwa daun salam memiliki efek antibakteri. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana efek antibakteri dari kulit batang salam. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif menggunakan metode difusi agar. Konsentrasi ekstrak yang digunakan adalah 25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol kulit batang salam memiliki efek antibakteri terhadap Staphylococcus aureus dengan konsentrasi 25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100% memberikan daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri sebesar 12 mm, 13,67 mm, 12,33 mm, dan 9 mm, sedangkan pada konsentrasi yang sama untuk Escherichia coli tidak terlihat daya hambat terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri. Konsentrasi ekstrak yang paling efektif dalam menghambat S. aureus adalah konsentrasi 50%, dimana konsentrasi 75% dan 100% kurang efektif.Kata kunci: uji efek antibakteri, kulit batang salam, staphylococcus aureus, eschericia coli AbstractSalam plants (Syzygium polyanthum (Wight) Walp.) Salam plants have been known since ancient to treat various diseases. The parts of the plant that can be used as drug are bark. From the research that has been conducted has proven that Salam leaves has an antibacterial effect. The objective of this study was to determine the antibacterial effect of salam bark.This was a descriptive study by using agar diffusion method. The concentration of the extract used was 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Salam bark has antibacterial effects to Staphylococcus aureus with the concentration of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% gives the inhibition of the growth of bacteria on 12 mm, 13.67 mm, 12.33 mm, and the 9 mm, while at the same concentration for Escherichia coli was no bacterial inhibition area. The most effective concentration of extract in inhibiting S. aureus was concentration of 50%, while the concentration of 75% and 100% less effective.Keywords: antibacterial activity test, salam bark, staphylococcus aureus, eschericia coli

AbstrakPendahuluan: Madu digunakan sebagai agen makanan dan obat tradisional, mengandung nektar atau gulaeksudat dari tanaman yang dikumpulkan oleh lebah madu serta merupakan salah satu obat tradisional yangdigunakan oleh masyarakat. Madu diketahui memiliki kemampuan sebagai efek antibakteri, seperti Escherichia colidan Stahpylococcus aureus. Kedua bakteri ini memiliki sifat yang berbeda tetapi memilki kesamaan dari penyakityang disebabkannya. Kualitas dan jenis madu juga sesuai dengan tempat dan lokasi lebah berkembang biak.Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat perbandingan efek antibakteri madu asli Sikabu dan Lubuk Minturunterhadap Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus secara in vitro. Metode Penelitian: Madu yang diuji untukpenelitian ini adalah madu yang berasal dari Sikabu dan Lubuk Minturun. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulanDesember 2011 sampai Mei 2012 di laboratorium Mikrobiologi Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Andalas. Jenispenelitian yang digunakan adalah eksperimental dengan menggunakan metode difusi (metode cakram) dananalitik dengan menghubungkan perbedaan yang dimiliki kedua madu sebagai efek antibakteri. Type of research is experimental diffusion method (disc method) and analytical distinction owned bylinking the two of honey as an antibacterial effect. Results: These results indicate that the honey Sikabu and LubukMinturun have no antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli, both of honey have differences antibacterial effectagainst Staphylococcus aureus. ABSTRAK                                                                        Imbuhan pakan unggas dapat berasal dari bahan herbal yang mengandung berbagai komponen aktif yang bermanfaat bagi pertumbuhan ternak.Temu putih dan jahe gajah dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai imbuhan pakan karena mengandung minyak atsiri yang dapat berperan sebagai agen antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui komponen penyusun minyak atsiri dan aktivitas antimikroba pada rimpang temu putih dan jahe gajah. Penelitian dilakukan dengan percobaan in vitro menggunakan temu putih dan jahe gajah yang diolah menjadi bentuk ekstrak minyak atsiri temu putih dan jahe gajah sebagai materi uji komposisi penyusun minyak atsiri serta bentuktepung dan enkapsulasi sebagai materi uji aktivitas antimikroba. Komposisi minyak atsiri temu putih terdiri dari lima komponen penyusun dengan cis-1,7-octadien-3-yl acetat sebagai komponen utama. Komposisi minyak atsiri jahe gajah terdiri dari tujuh komponen dan benzene,1-(1,5-dimethyl-4-hexenyl)-4-methyl-(CAS) ar-curcumene sebagai komponen utama. Minyak atsiri yang terkandung pada temu putih dan jahe gajah mempunyai peran dalam menghambat mikroba. Uji komposisi penyusun minyak atsiri menggunakan alat GC-MS dan uji aktivitas antimikroba menggunakan metode disc diffusion dan. Hasil dari uji aktivitas antimikroba menunjukkan bahwa temu putih dan jahe gajah dalam bentuk tepung dan enkapsulasi memiliki perbedaan yang sangat nyata (P<0,01) terhadap aktivitas antimikroba pada bakteri asam laktat, Escherichia coli dan Salmonella sp. Campuran temu putih dan jahe gajah (1:1) menunjukkan kemampuan terbaik dalam menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri patogen dengan diameter zona hambat 5,70±0,14 mm  (Escherichia coli) dan 6,88±0,45 mm (Salmonella sp.).Kata Kunci : antimikroba, fitobiotik, jahe gajah, minyak atsiri, temu putihABSTRACTThe poultry feed additives can contain herbal ingredients that contain various beneficial components for livestock growth. White turmeric and giant ginger can be used as feed additives because they contain essential oils that can be used as antibacterial agents. This study aims to determine the constituent components of essential oils and antimicrobial activity in white turmeric and giant ginger rhizomes. The study was carried out by in vitro experiments using white turmeric and giant ginger which were processed into the form of essential oil extract as material for the composition of essential oils test, and powder and encapsulation form as antimicrobial activity test material. The composition of essential oils of white turmeric consists of five constituent components with cis-1,7-octadien-3-yl acetate as the main component. The composition of giant ginger essential oil consists of seven components with benzene, 1- (1,5-dimethyl-4-hexenyl) -4-methyl- (CAS) ar-curcumene as the main component. Essential oils contained in the white turmeric and giant ginger have a role in inhibiting microbes. The composition of the essential oil tested using GC-MS and the antimicrobial activity test used the disc diffusion method. The results of the antimicrobial activity test showed that white turmeric and giant ginger in powder and encapsulation form had significant differences (P <0.01) on antimicrobial activity in lactic acid bacteria, Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. The mixture of white turmeric and giant ginger (1: 1) showed the best ability to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria with inhibitory zone diameters of 5.70 ± 0.14 mm (Escherichia coli) and 6.88 ± 0.45 mm (Salmonella sp.).Keywords: antimicrobial, essential oil, giant ginger, phytobiotic, white turmeric

Phytochemical screening test proved that the extract of Reeds (Imperata cylindrica) contained phenolic compounds tested using 5% FeCl3 reagent. Antibacterial test using agar diffusion method against Reeds extract in DMSO solvent. The phenolic compounds obtained from the saputangan leaves Reeds extract were 36.96 grams after undergoing maceration. Reeds extract of phenolic compounds with concentrations (200; 100; 50 and 25 ppm) had strength antibacterial where the average inhibition zone of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria was 10.0 mm and the average inhibition zone was at Escherichia coli bacteria measuring 10.3 mm.

ABSTRACTSponges are one of the biota components that make up coral reefs which are quite widely distributed. The metabolite content in the sponge can ward off and inhibit the pathogenic bacteria that interfere with it. This study aims to determine the activity of inhibiting bacterial growth from the extract and fraction of Leucetta chagosensis sponge against the growth of Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria. The samples were extracted using the maceration method with 95% ethanol solvent and then fractionated using 3 solvents with different polarity levels, namely methanol, n-hexane and chloroform. Activity test using the disk diffusion agar method of Kirby and Bauer. Only the MeOH fraction was able to inhibit the growth of E. coli bacteria with an average inhibition zone of 6.88 mm. Whereas for S.aureus bacteria extracts and all fractions showed activity to inhibit bacterial growth with an average inhibition zone of EtOH (6.61 mm), CHCI3 (6.68 mm), n-hexane (7.83 mm) and MeOH (8.00 mm), respectively. Kandungan metabolit yang ada di dalam spons dapat menangkal dan menghambat bakteri patogen pengganggunya.  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat aktivitas menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri dari ekstrak dan fraksi spons Leucetta chagosensis. terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri Gram positif Staphylococcus aureus dan Gram negatif Escherichia coli. Sampel di ekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi dengan pelarut etanol 95% lalu di fraksinasi dengan menggunakan 3 pelarut dengan tingkat kepolaran yang berbeda yaitu metanol, n-heksan dan kloroform. Uji aktivitas menggunakan metode disk diffusion agar Kirby dan Bauer.  Hanya fraksi MeOH yang mampu menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri E.coli dengan zona hambat rata-rata 6,88 mm. Sedangkan terhadap bakteri S.aureus ekstrak dan semua fraksi menunjukan aktifitas menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri dengan rata-rata zona hambat masing-masing EtOH (6,61 mm), CHCl3 (6,68 mm), n-Heksan (7,83 mm), dan MeOH (8,00 mm). Semua aktivitas yang ditunjukan dikategorikan lemah (weak).Kata kunci : Antibakteri, Leucetta chagosensis, Staphylococcus aureus,  Escherichia coli

Background: Pomegranate (Punica granatum) is one of the traditional medicines that contains antibacterial compounds that are effective against bacterial growth. Its chemical content includes saponins, tannins and flavonoids. Escherichia coli is a gram-negative bacterium which is a normal flora germ found in the human large intestine. These bacteria are pathogenic when they are outside the intestine and produce enterotoxins in epithelial cells which cause diarrhea. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial effect of pomegranate skin extract on the growth of Escherichia coli.Methods: This study used an experimental design study with a complete randomized design study divided into 5 groups namely groups 1 (15 ug/ml), 2 (20 ug/ml), 3 (25 ug/ml), positive control (ciprofloxatin), negative control. Making pomegranate peel extract was done by maceration method then rotary, after that the effectiveness of pomegranate extract extracted by the diffusion method was tested using Anova one-way test.Results: The results showed that the extract of pomegranate peel showed that it was able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli with a ratio of constants (15 ug/ml, 20 ug/ml, 25 ug/ml with inhibition diameters of 6.7 mm, 6.7 mm, 6, 7 mm, while for positive control with ciprofloxatin showed bacterial resistance to antibiotics.Conclusions: Statistically, pomegranate skin extract has an antibacterial power which is meaningful with p 0.005. Pomegranate rind extract has antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli medium because inhibition zone is 5-10 mm.

This study aims to examine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract and essential oil of Kalamansi citrus leaves (Citrofortunella microcarpa) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. The raw material of Kalamansi citrus leaves is obtained from the Village of Pondok Kubang, Bengkulu Tengah (3.70060S, 102.35780E). Ethanol extract from Kalamansi citrus leaves was obtained by maceration using ethanol 96%, then ethanol extract was made dilution concentration 40 ; 20; , 10; and 5%. The essential oil of Kalamansi citrus leaves is obtained by water-vapor distillation, then made variations of concentration 20;, 15;, 10;  and 5%. The method used to test the antibacterial activity is the paper disc diffusion method , the antibacterial activity is shown by the diameter of the inhibiting  zone formed. The data of antibacterial test result were analyzed by using One Way Anova test which showed the effect of treatment on the growth of test bacteria seen from the value (P <0,01) and continued by Duncan test to know the effect of the treatment. The results showed that ethanol extract of Kalamansi citrus leaves had antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria with moderate inhibitory diameter is  7.20 and 5.73 mm at concentration 40%, while antibacterial activity on essential oil of Kalamansi citrus leaves is categorized as strong with inhibition zone diameter is 14.83 and 13.00 mm at concentration 20%.

Objective: The objective of this study was to discover of the ethanolic extract of Rhinacanthus nasutus (L) Kurz in inhibiting Escherichia coli bacteria using an in vitro method. Methods: This is an experimental study using a laboratory test with Kirby-Bauer or paper disc method by observing and measuring the inhibition zone of the ethanolic extract of R. nasutus against E. coli bacteria with extract concentrations of 15%, 30%, and 60% consisting of control groups and treatment group. The positive control group used chloramphenicol antibiotics and negative control groups used Aquadest. E. coli was incubated at 37°C for 24 h. Then, the plates were incubated for 24 h at 37°C and the diameter of the inhibition zone was observed until the 3rd day with three repetitions. Results: The results of the study showed that the mean inhibition zone of E. coli bacteria was 10.93 mm, 12.09 mm, and 18.90 mm. The results of the Shapiro–Wilk test were p=0.199. The results of the one-way analysis of variance test were p<0.05 and that of the post hoc test indicated a significant value of p<0.05. Based on the results of the research, there were significant differences in the inhibition zone between the control group and the treatment group at a concentration of 15%, 30%, and 60%. Conclusion: R. nasutus extract was effective to inhibit the growth of E. coli bacteria at concentrations of 15%, 30%, and 60%, so R. nasutus is effective as an antimicrobial.

Abstract: Sambiloto is plant one of the natural resources that be come important to used as medicine. Sambiloto effcacy had been known since long time ago. Based on it’s pharmacological properties, Sambiloto leaves provide antidiarrheal activity against bacteria that causing diarehea in humans especially Eacherichia coli and Shigella dysentriae bacteria. The main content of Sambiloto leaves are diterpenoid lactones (andrographolide), paniculides, farnesols and flavonoids. The purpose of this research was to study the effect of the methanol extract concentration of Sambiloto leaves toward the sensitivity of Escherichia coli and Shigella dysentriae bacteria by using diffusion method. Research design using quasi experimental research. Sample used were leaf extract of Sambiloto with concentration of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25% with six times repetition. Data was collected and analyzed by using Spearman analysis. Based on the reseach fnding, the measurement of inhibition zone on Escherichia coli bacteria test found that the average value were 14.67 mm at 100% concentration, 13.67 mm at 75% concentration, 12.17 mm at concentration 50% and 10.00 mm at 25% concentration. While Shigella dysentriae bacteria test obtained that average value were 14.33 mm at 100% concentration, 13.33 mm at 75% concentration, 11.17 at concentration 50% and 9.33 mm at 25% concentration. The data were analyzed by Spearman test and the result was (p = 0,000 <0.01). It showed that there was inhibition zone effect of Sambiloto leaves extract on bacterial sensitivity of Escherichia coli and Shigella dysentriae by using diffusion method. It was concluded that the Sambiloto leaves extract is antibacterial.Abstrak: Tanaman Sambiloto merupakan salah satu bahan alam yang semakin banyak peminatnya untuk dijadikan obat. Khasiat Sambiloto sebenarnya sudah dikenal sejak zaman dahulu. Berdasarkan sifat farmakologinya, daun Sambiloto memberikan aktivitas antidiare terhadap bakteri yang menyebabkan diare pada manusia khususnya bakteri Escherichia coli dan Shigella dysentriae. Kandungan utama dari daun Sambiloto adalah diterpenoide lactones (andrographolide), paniculides, farnesols dan flavonoid. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkaji pengaruh konsentrasi ekstrak metanol daun sambiloto terhadap sensitivitas bakteri Escherichia coli dan Shigella dysentriae dengan metode difusi. Desain Penelitian ini berbentuk penelitian eksperimental semu. Sampel yang digunakan adalah ekstrak daun sambiloto dengan konsentrasi 100%, 75%, 50% dan 25% dengan pengulangan sebanyak enam kali. Data dikumpulkandan dianalisis dengan analisis Spearman. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian pengukuran zona hambat pada uji bakteri Escherichia coli didapatkan nilai rata-rata 14.67 mm pada konsentrasi 100%, nilai rata-rata 13.67 mm pada konsentrasi 75%, nilai rata-rata 12.17 mm pada konsentrasi 50% dan nilai rata-rata 10.00 mm pada konsentrasi 25%. Sedangkan uji bakteri Shigella dysentriae didapatkan nilai rata-rata 14.33 mm pada konsentrasi 100%, nilai rata-rata 13.33 mm pada konsentrasi 75%, nilai rata-rata 11.17 pada konsentrasi 50% dan nilai rata-rata 9.33 mm pada konsentrasi 25%. Data dianalisis dengan uji Spearman didapatkan hasil (p = 0,000 < 0.01), menunjukan bahwa terdapat pengaruh zona hambat ekstrak daun sambiloto terhadap sensitivitas bakteri Escherichia coli dan Shigella dysentriae dengan menggunakan metode difusi. Dapat disimpulkan bahawa ekstrak daun sambiloto bersifat antibakteri.
