This article aims to describe and analyze issues related to Islamic moderation in the perspective of Aristotle's ethics. Departing from the phenomenon of Islamic rigidity brought by a group with a one-sided truth claim that is not in line with the essence of Islam as a blessing for the universe. Truth claim contrasts to the concept of moderation in Islam. This article will compare the concept of moderation in Islam to Aristotle’s concept of the ethics of virtue. Thus it is interesting to see the concept of ethics in the context of religious moderation. Applying a descriptive-analysis approach, this article shows that the concept of Islamic moderation has in common with Aristotle's view of virtue. Aristotle views that moderation is a wisdom since it comes from the experience of thinking by combining the two choises until becoming a habit. It is the core argument of this article that tries to position reason and theory as a nature for justice.

Contemporary life is coloured with various conveniences. But the convenience is not obtained for free, but must be accompanied by various kinds of problems. Contemporary humans move in a worrying direction and require philosophical reorientation. Through a descriptive analysis approach, this paper explains how to find the format of solutions to contemporary problems through philosophical reorientation with Martin Heidegger's existentialism discourse.

This is a systemic functional study of the use of the items of pragmatic markers in a literary discourse. The aims of this study are to identify, analyze and describe the ways the items of pragmatic markers are used. Their contextual meanings, functions, and implication to the pedagogical attempts are also unfolded. The results of the interpretative and descriptive analysis reveal that the items of the core modals serving as pragmatic markers are found to be very dominant which also suggests that the genre of narrative fiction is linguistically characterized by the utterances that are established on the basis of knowledge and reasoning. The items of pragmatic markers are found to be polysemous and polyfunctional which are reflected pragmatically in the forms of politeness, negotiative and constructive functions. All these lead to the acknowledgement that the use of the items of pragmatic markers in literary discourse is important and their usage for language teaching in the applied linguistic contexts is worth conducting.

Fair punishment for a condemned has been long debated in the universe of discourse of law and global politics. The debate on the philosophical level was no less lively. Many schools of thought philosophy question, investigate, reflect and assess systematically the ideal model for the subject just punishment in violation of the law. One of the interesting and urgent legal thought Jeremy Bentham, a British philosopher renowned trying to provide a solution in the middle of the debate was the doctrine or theory of utilitarianism. The core idea is that the fair punishment should be a concern for happiness of a condemned itself, and not just for revenge. Bentham thought has relevance in several dimensions such as dimensions of humanism, moral and utility.

Abstract This article focuses on sarcasm, for which the definitions have often been loose and confusing, integrating it into the concept of irony. My approach is based on a large corpus of examples taken from two contemporary television-series, which help identify the wide range of linguistic processes at the core of sarcastic utterances. I present a quantitative and descriptive analysis of the main processes found in two American television-series: House M.D. and The Big Bang Theory. The results show the intricate meanings created in sarcasm through various linguistic mechanisms, such as repetition, explicitation, metonymy, metaphor, shift of focus, reasoning, and rhetorical questions. This more holistic analysis, including a broad corpus of instances and a more detailed analysis of the examples, aims to fill the unexplored gaps in more classical analyses, emphasizing the complexities and implications that can be drawn in interaction.

At 0400 hours on Wednesday, March 28, 1979, an extremely small and initially thought unimportant malfunction occurred at the nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island (TMI). Within a short period of time, that malfunction would turn into an event of momentous impact with repercussions felt over most of the world. The events of that malfunction would cause TMI to be labelled as the worst commercial nuclear incident in history and transform it into the nuclear test tube of the universe. What really happened at Three Mile Island? Thirty-six seconds after 0400 hours, several water pumps stopped functioning in the unit 2 nuclear power plant. In the minutes, hours and days that followed, a series of events—compounded by equipment failure, inappropriate procedures and human errors—escalated into the worst crisis yet experienced by the nation's nuclear power industry. This resulted in the loss of reactor coolant, overheating of the core, damage to the fuel (but probably no melting) and release outside the plant of radioactive gases. Hydrogen has was formed, primarily by the reaction between the zirconium casing that holds the radioactive fuel and steam. There, however, was no danger of the bubble inside the reactor vessel exploding, because of the absence of oxygen within the reactor.

Mathematicians and mathematical philosophers have often called attention to the fact that mathematical discoveries sometimes seem to anticipate important discoveries in physics. This is usually interpreted as meaning that the universe is “rational at the core” or that it was “created by a mathematician.” Such speculations are extremely enticing; but I wish to make an entirely different application of this interesting observation at the present time.
