Dates seeds are one of the byproducts of the date palm juice industry which has the potential for further processing. Dates seeds contain active compounds that are known to have ability to inhibit αglucosidase. This study aims to measure the activity of 70% ethanol extract and the fraction of date palm seeds with a mechanism in inhibiting αglucosidase. The measurement of inhibitory activity was carried out by extracting date palm seeds using 70% water and ethanol. The extraction product is then fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water. Then the total phenolic and flavonoid calculations were calculated for each extract and fraction. Measurement of α-glucosidase inhibition activity was measured based on reaction of substrate to enzyme by the addition of inhibitors. The results showed that the ethanolextract had the highest total phenolic and flavonoid, which were 76.86 mg GAE / g and 21.19 mg QE / g, respectively. n-hexane fraction have the best inhibitory activity seen from the IC50 value, which is 12.69 mg/L. The kinetics of inhibition of 70% ethanol extract of date palm seeds are mixed inhibition. Keywords: α-glucosidase, date seeds, flavonoids, kinetic inhibition, phenolics

Background: Consumption of orange juice which had acidic quality will cause a demineralization on enamel. The most effective way to prevent the demineralization process was by involving remineralization agents. Fluoride was effective to improve remineralization but has toxicity effect and caused fluorosis at certain dose. Another alternative for remineralization agent without providing side effects is theobromine contained in cocoa peel extract (Theobroma cacao). Objective: To explain the effect of theobromine and NaF 2% exposure on enamel surface hardness after immersion in commercial orange juice. Method: Twenty-seven cattle incisors were cut into a square shape 1x1 cm and then planted in a round resin mold then divided into three groups. All three groups were immersed in orange juice beverage for 60 minutes. The control group was immersed in distilled water, group I was given theobromine 200 mg / L, and group II was given 2% NaF after exposure for 96 minutes. Surface hardness measurements were carried out using the Wolpert Micro Vickers Testers tool. Results: There was a significant difference (p <0.05) between surface hardness of tooth enamel from the control group and theobromine group and there was also a significant difference between the control group and the NaF group. However, there was no significant difference (p> 0.05) in the NaF group with theobromine group. Conclusion: The effect of exposure to theobromine and NaF 2% on surface enamel hardness after immersion in orange juice beverage has the same result.

The effects of the physical state of nutrient media on the growth and elongation of excised date palm roots were investigated. Roots were cultured in a nutrient medium containing MS salts mixture, 1/2 modified White's organics, and (in mg–liter–1): NaH2PO4–H2O, 170; sucrose, 60,000; inositol, 40; adenine sulfate, 240; activated charcoal, 4000; 2,4-D, 1; kinetin, 2. pH was adjusted at 5.7 ± 0.1. Both agar and Gelrite were singly used as solidifying agents. Liquid media were either stationary or rotated on gyratory shakers at 70 to 80 rpm. The effects of incubation of cultured roots under light or dark conditions were also studied. Media pH and its effects on growth and elongation of cultured roots were tested at various ranges (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10). Trials were also made to determine the passage length for transfer and subculture of cultured roots to a newly prepared medium. Liquid media highly supported better growth and elongation of cultured roots compared to solidified media. There was no significant difference in growth or elongation between agar or Gelrite media. Shaking liquid medium resulted in significantly better growth and elongation compared to stationary medium. No difference was observed between dark- and light-incubated cultured roots. Cultured roots grew and elongated better at pH 7.0–8.0. No growth or elongation occurred at pH 9.0. Roots continued to grow and elongate even after 12 weeks in culture. Therefore, 10 to 12 weeks after culture was determined to be the optimum passage length for date palm root culture.

The aim of the study was to assess the chemical and biochemical composition of heat-treated dates palm fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.) cultivated in Algeria and stored under Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP). In this research, fresh dates palm fruits at harvest (Phoenix dactylifera L.) have been subjected at heat treatment at 55 ± 2°C for 20 min in a ventilated oven. The samples were packed in specific Polyethylene Terephthalate packaging (PET) bags with a thickness of 2.5 μm under MAP condition. The effect of this heat treatment on date fruits quality was investigated during 5 months of storage at room temperature storage (22 ± 1°C of temperature with 75 to 80% of relative humidity (RH), and 10 ± 1°C with 85 to 90% of RH). Chemical and biochemical composition of the samples were studied. Results indicated that during storage the Brix degree, protein, and vitamin C content changed significantly (p<0.05). The major change was observed for lipid values varied from about 0.02 to 0.06% at 10°C, and 0.04 to 0.07% at 22°C for samples not heat-treated unpacked after 5 months of storage, these results represent a highly significant difference (p<0.01). Harvesting at Tamr stage followed by treating the fruits with heat disinfestation packed in MAP, and storing at 10 ± 1°C showed to be a promising method for maintaining dates fruits storage quality.

Teeth have an aesthetic value because teeth which are clean, neat and white can increase self confidence. Staining or dental discoloration can disrupt the appearance and cause discomfort. The most common type of discoloration is extrinsic discoloration. Treatment that can be done to overcome extrinsic discoloration is extracoronal bleaching. One way to avoid the extracoronal bleaching side effects is application of remineralization materials. The recommended remineralization materials for post-bleaching are fluoride and phospho peptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP). This research aims to know the effect of whey extract application and CPP-ACP on tooth enamel hardness after extracoronal bleaching. Experimental laboratory with pre- and post-test control design was performed on 24 first maxillary premolar which devided into 3 groups. On group I, specimens were immersed in artificial saliva. Specimen in group II were immersed in whey extract meanwhile specimens were immersed in CPP-ACP on group III. Whey extract and CPP-ACP immersions were conducted 10 minutes every 12 hours for 15 days. The enamel surface roughness test was performed twice, after extracoronal bleaching treatment and after 15 days remineralization agent application. This study result indicated significant differences between group I and group II and group III (p0,05), but there was no significant difference between group II and group III (p0,05). This study showed the enamel surface hardness after whey extract application is higher than CPP-ACP but difference was not significant statistically

This research was conducted to test the feasibility of using date palm(Phoenix dactylifera L.) brown sugar as an alternative to refined cane sugar in preparing sweet dahi. Quality assessment tests were conducted on four different types of dahi prepared by adding different levels of date palm brown sugar, such as 10% (A), 12% (B), 14% (C) and 12% refined cane sugar (D, as control). All the samples were analyzed for organoleptic, chemical and microbiological qualities. The scores for smell and taste, body and texture, color and appearance, and total scores for four types of dahi samples showed significant differences at various levels (p<0.01 to p<0.05). It was found that scores for all the organoleptic parameters of sample B were the highest among the samples, whereas sample D obtained the lowest scores. Total viable count of bacteria and coliform count, and sugar content, ash content, and protein content were differed significantly (p<0.01). Contents for fat also showed significant difference (p<0.05), though dry matter content, % acidity, and pH value showed insignificant differences. It could be concluded that sample B (containing 12% date palm brown sugar) was the best in terms of organoleptic, chemical and microbiological qualities.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjas.v43i1.19387 Bang.
