Science education in Rwandan schools still faces a number of challenges including the lack or shortage of equipment available for science experiments. This paper describes research conducted to assess the impact of using improvised versus conventional laboratory equipment in experiments. Eighty-five lower secondary school students were assessed using a semi-experimental post-test design on thermal expansion of bodies. Data analysis using a t-test produced a t-Stat of 2.74 over a t-Critical of 1.98 indicating a statistical significance between the two experimental groups in favour of the group using improvised equipment. As a result, it is recommended that improvised equipment be used in those instances in which there is a lack or shortage of conventional equipment since students’ achievement was similar regardless of the type of equipment used.

This chapter focuses on a method, social network analysis (SNA) that can be used to assess the quantity and quality of connection, communication and collaboration mediated by social tools in an organization. An organization, in the Canadian public sector, is used as a real-life case study to illustrate how SNA can be used in a pre-test/post-test evaluation design to conduct a comparative assessment of methods that can be used before, during and after the implementation of organizational change in work processes. The same evaluation method can be used to assess the impact of introducing new social media such as wikis, expertise locator systems, blogs, Twitter and so on. In other words, while traditional pre-test/post-test designs can be easily applied to social media, the social media tools themselves can be added to the assessment toolkit. Social network analysis in particular is a good candidate to analyze the connections between people and content as well as people with other people.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the impacts of an ecological footprint (EF) reduction campaign on the pro-environmental behavior of university students, faculty and staff. The campaign emphasized educating participants on specific actions that reduce resource use and the relative environmental benefit of each action. Design/methodology/approach This investigation used a pre-test–post-test design. At the beginning of an academic year, participants were invited to measure their baseline EF and take part in a footprint reduction campaign. At the end of the campaign, participants measured their EF again to see if they were able to reduce it by 10 per cent. Findings Participants in the footprint reduction campaign decreased their EF by 10 per cent. Students changed behaviors related to goods and services the most, resulting in a 16 per cent decrease in footprint for this behavior category. The most significant behavior change for faculty and staff was in the housing category with footprint reductions of 12 and 11 per cent, respectively. The most common behavioral changes in students were low- and no-cost options. Research limitations/implications Because of the general nature of the EF tool, estimates of resource use reduction are approximate. Data describing pro-environmental behaviors were self-reported by participants, making accuracy dependent on participant recollections. Originality/value This paper illustrates how providing quantitative, personalized and university-specific knowledge on the impact of personal lifestyles on natural resources can facilitate significant, measurable pro-environmental behavioral change for the entire campus community. It also provides direction on how to develop targeted sustainability campaigns for different audiences.

The aim of the present study is to clarify the effect of the intervention of live-in maids in the family affairs and especially in the interactive relationship between couples whether by revealing respect or by their position in quarrels. The maid is a key factor in the domestic life of the host family; she plays a role in the food preparation and the cleaning, gives medicine to the children, resolves their problems and helps with their homework. The method and methodology for this study was the social survey and stratified random sample application. A questionnaire was used for the current study to collect data from 1,800 families consisting of a husband and a wife who live with the maid in the same house. The statistical package that was used in this study was SPSS for analyzing the collected data applying statistical equations such as the Independent Sample T-test for the two independent samples of the husbands and wives. Additionally, the Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and the Post Hoc Multiple Comparison for Observed Means for comparisons between the averages of arithmetical means of the data of the study were used to investigate the effect of independent variables. The scale for the independent variable related to the maid’s interference in the family affairs included three levels as follows: (a –high intervention b – medium intervention c-absolute no intervention). The purpose was to know the effect of the independent variable on the two dependent variables which are 1 -respect between spouses 2 – fights between spouses). The findings of the study suggest that there is a statistical significance between the feelings of respect between spouses as well as the quarrels between the couple and the live-in maid’s interference in family affairs. Finally, the study recommends that future studies and research shed more light on the various problems with house servants like crimes and theft.

Abstract Background The emergence of COVID-19 raises the opportunity to reimagine medical education. One way of attempting this is online classes, also known as e-learning, through recordings and or live streaming. The purpose of this research is to ascertain the effectiveness of using the e-learning instructional methodology for a Pediatric module with the fourth year MBBS students at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. Methods It was a sequential (Quantitative-Qualitative) mixed-method study. The quantitative component of the study consisted of pre and post-tests, as well as feedback on each session. The qualitative component was composed of focused-group discussions to explore students' experiences. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0. Mean ±SD was reported for quantitative variables, and frequency and percentages were calculated for nominal variables. The pre and post-test scores were compared using a paired t-test. Pre and post mean test scores were analyzed in comparison to the level of student groups (Experts, Semi-experts, and Novice) by one-way ANOVA. For qualitative content analysis, categories were clumped together to yield sub-themes that were further merged into themes. Results All students (n= 102) participated and enrolled in this study. Fifty-nine participants (68.8%) were female. Participants were stratified into three groups, Novice 41(40.2%), Semi-expert 21 (19.6%), and Expert 40 (39.2%). The majority of the students appreciated the session structure and facilitation. There was a significant effect (p<0.005) on knowledge enhancement during each session, depicted by the improvement in post-test scores. It was also supported by the positive association (r=0.242 to 0.595) between the gain in knowledge and each session held. The ANOVA yielded no statistical significance between the knowledge gained among the three group levels, denoting that our online module had been proven successful in achieving the same learning goals as an in-person rotation. Conclusion E-learning is an effective way of continuing the process of delivering medical education, especially in unprecedented times. Technological enhancements will help carry the impact forward as a blended-learning pedagogical approach in undergraduate medical education.

In the current empirical research, the researchers aimed to prepare a scale and program on rapid reading and its impact on understanding and increasing the number of words as it went (Tony Buzan, 2011 - 2018). The program was based on a sample consisting of (14) equal female students in terms of age, sex, social status and level of education, as one experimental group of students of the internal section (18) at the University of Salahaddin - Erbil. The importance of the current empirical research is that reading fast teaches students to learn new ways of reading and understanding and increasing the number of words, and left the previous misconceptions in reading and understanding, which we learned from childhood in schools, where it was an obstacle to reading fast and understanding and increase the number of words and benefit from the effort and time as well. The accuracy of the visual reliability and the stability of the method test and re-test were verified. The apparent of the visual reliability was 100% and the stability coefficient was 91%. The pre-test was carried out on the experimental group and the program was applied to them and then the post-test was performed on them. Statistical analysis of the social sciences (Spss) showed the results: 1. Prepare a rapid reading program 2. There is a statistically significant difference between the arithmetic mean value of the pre- test and the post-test, in favor for the post-test in degree of freedom (26) at the level of statistical significance (0.001) This means that the independent variable (Quick Reading Program) has an effective effect on the dependent variables (understanding and increasing the number of words). In the light of the results, the researchers presented some recommendations and suggestions.
