This study aims to explain the forms of power experienced by peripheral characters in the Pasung Jiwa novel by Okky Madasari. In addition, this study also explains the strategies carried out by these three peripheral characters to fight systemic power in the midst of society. In terms of analyzing existing problems, this research uses the theory of Hegemony from Antonio Gramsci through descriptive qualitative methods using the sociology of literary works, namely using forms of power that have been developed on the three characters in the story. The results showed the difference between humans in getting freedom in the period before and after the reform. This novel shows the existence of hegemony that occurs in several peripheral characters in the story, namely Sasana, Cak Jek, and Elis. In the process of searching for identity, the three of them found what was done by the family, even in religious organizations. These forms of hegemony also dominate their bodies and minds. Sasana, Cak Jek, and Elis are aware that its domination does not only occur in themselves, but also in the whole society. Therefore, these three characters choose to fight the hegemony that experienced in themselves with the struggle to make themselves free from the systemic power, both from the confinement family, the norms that exist in society, work, and also the doctrines of religion that have already dominated Sasana, Cak Jek, and Elis.

The last two decades signified the shift in the period of literary development. The emergence of various literary works that developed in the internet era succeeded in breaking the order of conventional literary publications which originally needed a layered process to be able to reach the readers. The rapid development of cyber literature produced many new literary works. The recognition of numbers in children is not only about knowing the symbol of a number, but children are able to know the meaning or value of a number. The purpose of this research is to develop TALOKA media which is considered interesting to solve the existing problems, especially in the ability to recognize numbers in early childhood. The development method used in this study is a modification of the 4D Thiagarajan development model. The resulting data will be analyzed using qualitative descriptive analysis, quantitative descriptive analysis and t test. The results showed that TALOKA media can improve the ability to recognize numbers in early childhood. From the results of data analysis obtained a significance value of 0.000 <0.005, then H0 is rejected. Thus it can be said that there is a difference in the average before and after treatment and the average score of the treatment before and after treatment in the learning process using TALOKA Media that has been developed. The difference in the mean value of the experimental group and the control group proves that using the TALOKA Media that has been developed can improve the ability to recognize numbers in early childhood.

The purpose of this research was to describe poverty in Nunuk Y. Kusmiana’s novel Gadis Pesisir. The book describes Umar and his daughter Halijah. Umar was a fisherman who did not use modern fishing technology. This greatly affected his fishing abilities, which made the family poor. This study adopted the poverty descriptions proposed by Soeharto (2005), namely a material, social and income description. The material description included daily primary needs such as clothing, food, shelter, health service and education. The social description included social exclusion, dependence on others and an inability to participate in society. The description of income included the lack of income associated with the number of children in the family. This study used descriptive qualitative methods because this is the most suitable method for literary phenomena (Endraswara, 2011). The descriptive method does not use numbers but uses an appreciation of the interaction between the concepts that are being studied empirically (Semi: 1993). The data collection used sorting and noting. The results of the study indicated that material, social and income features are not fulfilled in this novel. Keywords: poverty, poverty description, material, social, income

Natalya Y. Shelkova – Ph.D., Associate Professor, Economics Department, Guilford College, Greensboro, USA. Email: [email protected] It has been documented that the introduction of market economy institutions in Russia has disadvantaged Russian women, weakening their economic position and their power within the family. This paper investigates whether the introduction of the 2007 the Maternal Capital Law, which aims to promote fertility by granting Russian women a non-cash subsidy for having more than one child, affected the intrahousehold balance of power in Russian families. In order to investigate this hypothesis, the paper looks at changes in the ratio of family expenditure on children to spending on alcohol and tobacco before and after passing of the law. Data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE), 2002 to 2010, is used. The estimated regression models employ the difference-in-difference methodology and are based on Lundberg, Pollack and Wales, who researched a similar policy shift in the UK in 1970s. The results demonstrate that the year 2008 was a critical turning point: starting with 2008 the ratio of family expenditure on children to spending on alcohol and tobacco increased for families with two or more children (the results are statistically significant). After 2007, on average, expenditure on children increased by fifty-nine roubles per every ruble of alcohol and tobacco expenditures (mesearured in 2002 roubles), nearly doubling. The effect in families with a husband not holding a college degree was shown to be larger and more siginifcant than in families with college-educated husbands. It is concluded that the 2007 Law has had a positive impact on the bargaining power of Russian women.

The main aim of our study was to verify the effectiveness of simple disinfection using wet wipes for reduction of microbial contamination of mobile phones and computer keyboards. Bacteriological swabs were taken before and after disinfection with disinfectant wipes with active ingredients chlorhexidine digluconate and triclosan. The incidence and type of microorganisms isolated before and after disinfection was evaluated; the difference was expressed as percentage of contamination reduction. Our results confirmed the high degree of surface contamination with bacteria, some of which are opportunistic pathogens for humans. Before the process of disinfection, on both surfaces, mobile phones, and computer keyboards, the common skin commensal bacteria like coagulase-negative staphylococci were diagnosed most frequently. On the keyboards, species of the genus Bacillus and representatives of the family Enterobacteriaceae were abundant. The potentially pathogenic species were represented by Staphylococcus aureus. Cultivation of swabs performed 5 min after disinfection and subsequent calculation of the reduction of contamination have shown that simple wiping with antibacterial wet wipe led to a significant reduction of microbial contamination of surfaces, with effect ranging from 36.8 to 100%.

From many discussions on wilderness in literary works, only a few focus on the young adult dystopian, even more on Suzanne Collins’s The Hunger Games. For this reason, this article aims to portray the wilderness in the book as the survival resource since the previous studies fail to point out such an issue. This recent study is conducted by descriptive qualitative methods. As the theoretical basis, the discussion employs Garrard’s account of wilderness and Ross’s myth of wilderness in American literature. As a result, the discussion depicts the wilderness as the natural woodland surrounding District 12 and the artificial battleground of the Games in Panem. The woods in Katniss’s district enable her to provide for her family and develop such literacy in the wilderness. This literacy is advantageous in the Games arena, thus helps Katniss to be one of the winners. The findings might provide such an insight to the reader to live harmoniously with nature, even more with the wilderness.
