Higher Islamic Education in Egypt passed through many stages between strength and weakness, but what that cannot be denied is that there is an intellectual development that took place in this education due to different factors and reasons which influenced this development both negatively and positively. In the past, Islamic education was predominantly theological but the condition changed to the extent that the system became a twinning of general public education with Islamic studies education represented in Al-Azhar. Islamic education in Egypt thrived during the seventh to tenth centuries when primary Islamic schools were established as kuttābs, which subsequently advanced to Al-Azhar system. Kuttāb institutions emerged as spontaneous schools at grassroot level, often connected with mosques, but also created by the communities in homes, shops, tents, or under palm trees. Islamic studies education by then was built around individual teachers rather than institutions, and this helped the spread of education in the Muslim world. This later changed to institutional based education as evidenced in Al-Azhar. Therefore, the author in this paper intends to explore the factors that contributed to the intellectual development of Islamic education and the role of Al-Azhar in this endeavour. The view that Al-Azhar as an institution submitted to the Egyptian regimes and was unable to innovate intellectually and ideologically is one of this article’s major arguments.

This study aims to examine the existence of the hermeneutic thinking of ijtihad and authentic jurisprudence of Gus Dur in Indonesia. By using Martin Heidegger's hermeneutics, this study produces two conclusions: First, the authentic hermeneutic paradigm of ijtihad Gus Dur seeks to establish a dialectic between the discourse of the past text and the interpreter's current discourse so that the law of fiqih can produce the ultimate benefit of the people. Secondly, the authentic jurisprudence of Gus Dur has given the discourse of new fiqh relevant to the current development of polygamy law, marriage, zakat and the Islamic education system grounded in accordance with Indonesian culture, not Arab culture, so that he wants the earthing of legal discourse of jurisprudence instead of Arabization .

The aim of this present study is to initiate Islamic education in order to rectify the educational paradigm in Indonesia. With respect to the research methodology, this study employed a qualitative approach and literature study method. In its implementation, the collected data was then analyzed using a descriptive analysis method. Based on the results of the discussion, in order to rectify the educational paradigm in Indonesia, it should initially change the secularism paradigm that has been fossilized in the world of education into the paradigm of Islam, al-Qur`an, and Tauhid. As a consequence, this paradigm will have implications for the establishment of the conceptualized education system that inevitably also affects the to-be-achieved educational objectives. In order to realize a good education system, there should be integration between the elements of education practitioners which consist of family, mosques/schools/campuses, and society. As a result, those aforementioned objectives will be successfully achieved in the moment when Islamic rules are fully implemented in all aspects of life. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously educate the public regarding the importance of implementing Islamic rules in all aspects of life, including in the aspect of education.

The various verses of the Quran explain that zikr and Tafakkur  are always related. They should have become the spirit of the education system so that the graduates could possess a balanced zikr and Tafakkur . On the contrary, education is more focused on the development of knowledge. The dichotomy of knowledge affects education where ideally Islamic education includes zikr and Tafakkur  education. Therefore, the integration of zikr and Tafakkur  is something important, urgent, and beneficial for the improvement of the nation's morality. The purpose of this study is to ensure the importance of the concept of zikr and Tafakkur  in the perspective of the Qur'an by providing thought on the importance of the integration of zikr and Tafakkur  in Islamic education so that it could be the basis for the development of Islamic education. The approach used in this study was the qualitative approach by employing the library research method. The integration of zikr and Tafakkur  in Islamic educational institutions can be realized if the Qur’an is made as to the main base of knowledge source by researching, understanding, and deepening the science and technology based on Qur’an.

Syncretism from the past until now is still a topic of discussion in a study. At first syncretism existed only in the fields of religion and philosophy, but now it is developing in the educational aspect. This can be seen in educational institutions in Papua, especially the Papuan Islamic Education Foundation. This study uses qualitative analytical research with a historical approach. The results of this study indicate that Yapis Papua was founded on the initiation of community organizations and Islamic leaders who are in the NU and Muhammadiyah community organizations. The two organizations and Islamic leaders together building the Papuan community through education by establishing the Yapis Papua educational institution and now there are 193 schools and 5 universities in Papua. This collaboration occurs because the existing Islamic schools have not been recognized because they are only local and partial so they do not have a parent foundation throughout the land of Papua.
