This design case chronicles a photography assignment starting with its origins in the master’s level lab of a communications design program in Taiwan’s National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, directed by Jalin Huang. We follow this assignment through its adaptation for a basic media development course taught by Professor Elizabeth Boling in the instructional design master’s program at Indiana University, and on to its evolution as a learning exercise and communication device in the instructional design studio sequence of that same program. A total of 52 schools participated in the experimental implementation phase of the project P.A.T.H.S. (Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programmes). After completion of the Tier 1 Program (Secondary 1 level), 344 teachers and social workers responded to the Subjective Outcome Evaluation Form (Form B), assessing their views of the program and their own performance. Qualitative data analyses based on the schools' evaluation reports showed that the program implementers had enhanced knowledge and skills, learned to establish instructor-student relationships and cooperate with colleagues, and fostered self-development. The workers also appreciated the program philosophy and values, program design and resources, process of implementation, interaction between instructors and students, and program effectiveness. The findings also revealed that the workers encountered difficulties in the program implementation and they also made suggestions on how the program design, program arrangement, manpower deployment, and support for the program implementation could be improved.

The notion of public service media is used to describe public broadcasters’ provision of services that contribute to the democratic, cultural and social objectives of society, and this on multiple devices and across various technologies. While most research focuses on the theoretical case for public service media, this contribution analyses how public broadcasters strategically position themselves as providers of public service media. What are their distribution strategies in a market that is no longer dominated by the media themselves, but is characterised by a growing concentration of power in the hands of the so-called platforms and a continuous influx of new entrants? The article is based on a qualitative document analysis of public broadcasters’ strategies in Flanders, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Complementary expert interviews were also carried out. Our main finding is that public broadcasters are distributing more and more varied types of content online, but that digital-only content remains limited and is considered as a subsidiary activity. Ample reference is made to the surrounding environment as a means to legitimise the existence of public broadcasters. However, this is not yet translated into concrete and focused distribution strategies.

At the time of the Prophet, the mosque was a center for worship activities and economic activities, learning, socio-politics, etc. From this mosque environment, great figures in Islam were born who were not only strong in religion but also intellectually and mentally. However, the mosque has decreased in function now so that it is only a place of prayer. This phenomenon also occurs in the city of Medan, which is one of the largest cities in Indonesia, with the majority of the population being Muslim. Therefore, Medan often becomes the center of various activities, including Islamic religious activities in the area. Unfortunately, Medan does not yet have adequate facilities that can accommodate various Islamic religious activities, so it needs an activity center known as an Islamic center. The design of the Islamic center in the city of Medan solves design problems with an approach methodology ranging from literature studies, site surveys, and design concept analysis. This Islamic center applies a design concept by taking Islamic values that are not indifferent to the surrounding environment so that elements of the local culture are still considered. It is hoped that this Islamic center will not only be able to become a center of activity, especially Islamic religious activities in Medan, but also an area of learning about Islamic and local values in its design
