Abstract The aim of this paper is to look at the extent and type of internationalization among Hungarian information technology (IT) small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the possible relationship between the degree of innovativeness and the internationalization of these companies. Information technologies play an important role in the Hungarian economy: this sector is one of the most R&D intensive industries in which many SMEs are active. The paper reviews relevant theories of internationalization in research, development and innovation (RDI) to give a broader picture of the environment in which SMEs have to succeed. This is followed by a secondary data analysis to show the situation of the industry in Hungary, then by an analysis of the survey data and interviews designed specifically for the purpose of this research. The new empirical results show that Hungarian IT SMEs are still at the beginning of the internationalization process: while aware of the advantages of collaborations and internationalization, they are still reluctant to venture out of their “safety zone” and therefore they collaborate only with their closest partners. Very few SMEs have decided to establish international RDI contacts. The analysis suggests that the main barriers in internationalization of the Hungarian SMEs are due to lack of capital, appropriate managerial capabilities and innovation-friendly economic environment. So far, most theories/empirical research have concentrated on the role and activities of multinational enterprises in the internationalization of RDI, while in the literature less relevant knowledge on SMEs is available. The aim of this paper is to contribute to this latter part of the literature by analyzing the international activities of innovative/R&D-intensive SMEs in Hungary.

Thanks to the rapid development in the field of information technology, healthcare providers rely more and more on information systems to deliver professional and administrative services. There are high demands for those information systems that provide timely and accurate patient medical information. High-quality healthcare services depend on the ability of the healthcare provider to readily access the information such as a patient’s test results and treatment notes. Failure to access this information may delay diagnosis, resulting in improper treatment and rising costs (Rind et al., 1997).

Information systems researchers continue to grapple with the development of frameworks to aid managers in the identification of opportunities for the strategic use of information technology. Many of the current frameworks have been proposed to guide the systems development process, but few have successfully dealt with the underlying business issues that drive the need to develop an information system in the first place. Because the difficulties that a particular business must cope with arise from the distinctive characteristics of the firm, its product and the particular niche in which the firm operates, this chapter presents a two-dimensional Competitive Force/Marketing Mix (CF/MM) framework that can be used to recognize opportunities for strategic information systems within the firm’s niche. The CF/MM framework is based on a combination of Porter’s view of strategy as a response to the unique mix of the five competitive forces faced by a firm, and the firm’s marketing strategy. By using the CF/MM framework, managers and researchers can identify opportunities to use emerging information technologies as part of front-line competitive strategy. After presentation of the CF/MM framework, the chapter presents a summary of the results of a CF/MM-based analysis of 150 articles related to the competitive use of information technology that have been published in both the popular press and scholarly press. Organizations that are successful in creatively focusing the use of the expanding array of modern information technologies on their particular business niche will increase their ability to survive in the dynamic business environment of the year 2000 and beyond. The CF/MM framework can also be used by IS managers to orchestrate the mix of applications held by a firm in order to maximize the strategic impact of IT investments.

Methods: The method of parsing analysis and the method of social modeling for analyzing problem issues in the organization of the  student's practice process and the creation of an appropriate IT project has been applied. Results: A variant of innovative solution and optimization of information provision of the process of organizing various types of student practice with the use of modern information technologies is offered - web-oriented information system. The functionality of the created web-based information system "Practice" has been prepared, tested and described. Web-IP Practice is developed as a web application, the server part of which is implemented on the basis of the AMP software package, which includes: Apache, MySQL, PHP. The components of this complex are distributed with free licenses, thus, the Web IP Practice can function without the usage of expensive software. The modular structure of the system makes it possible to set up access, registration and authentication and manage user data, manage events and generate reporting documents for organization and practice. The proposed web-IP Practice provides opportunities for the following tasks: - informing students about organization and passing of practice; - preparation of documentation package on organization and passing of practice; - management and control of the process of passing the practice; - formation of reporting materials. Conclusion: Application of information technology in the organization of student practice is effective and provides the ability of  automatically formation and control the database, manage and control the process of organizing practices using web technologies. Monitoring the practice of remote access provides cost savings and time optimization. Elaboration of all worksheets (journal of practice) in electronic form and by sharing allows to supervise and effectively organize the close cooperation of the leader and the student during the practice.
