The article presents the results of assessing the structure and growth of smallleaved Linden stands in the conditions of the burzyansk forest area. Regularities of small-leaved Linden renewal in the studied territory are revealed. The distribution curves of Linden trees by diameter have positive asymmetry and kurtosis. The difference in the arithmetic mean, mode, and median values, as well as the true average diameter, indicate that the stand is of different ages. Analysis of the growth of model trees indicates good growth conditions in the conditions of the design object, but in recent years there has been a decrease in growth in all indicators, which indicates the need for thinning of the stand.

The hairy root clones of Gentiana dinarica cl-B, cl-D, cl-3, and cl-14 were cultivated in parallel in diverse simple bioreactors, including temporary immersion systems RITA® (TIS RITA®), bubble column bioreactors (BCB), and Erlenmeyer flasks (EF), and evaluated for biomass production and xanthone content. The obtained results showed that TIS RITA® and BCB containing ½ MS medium with 4% sucrose provided equally good growth conditions in which the majority of the clones displayed the higher percentage of dry matter (DM%), and xanthones norswertianin-1-O-primeveroside (nor-1-O-prim) and norswertianin production than those cultivated in EF. Thin and well branched hairy root clone cl-B grown in BCB for 7 weeks was superior regarding all growth parameters tested, including growth index (19.97), dry weight (2.88 g), and DM% (25.70%) compared to all other clones. Cl-B cultured in TIS RITA® contained the highest amount of nor-1-O-prim (56.82 mg per vessel). In BCB with constant aeration, cl-B accumulated the highest norswertianin content reaching 18.08 mg/vessel. The optimized conditions for cultivation of selected G. dinarica hairy root clones in highly aerated TIS RITA® and BCB systems contribute to the development of bioreactor technology designed for the large scale commercial production of xanthones nor-1-O-prim and norswertianin.

The growth conditions of a Geobacillus sp. were investigated by single-factor experiments. The strain was strictly aerobic bacterium, and could grow on hydrocarbons as the sole carbon source. The optimum carbon and nitrogen sources were 3.0% sucrose and 0.20% KNO3, respectively. The range of temperature, salinity and pH for the bacterial growth was 35-70 °C, 0-10% NaCl and 5.5-9.5, and good growth was obtained at 35-65 °C, 0.5-8% NaCl and 6.0-9.0, respectively. Particularly, the optimum temperature for the bacterial growth was between 50 °C and 60 °C. The strain had wide adaptability to the extreme conditions, and may be potentially applied to microbial enhanced oil recovery and oil-waste bioremediation technology.

A novel thermophilic, microaerophilic, sulfur-reducing bacterium designated strain St55BT was isolated from a sulfide chimney in the hydrothermal field of Suiyo Seamount (Izu-Bonin Arc, Western Pacific). Cells of the isolate were rod-shaped and tended to form a chain-link circular structure (a rotund body) at exponential phase under good growth conditions. The isolate was a chemoheterotroph requiring yeast extract for growth. Although strain St55BT used oxygen as an electron acceptor, it could not form colonies in an oxygen concentration of more than 5 % (v/v). The isolate also used nitrate, nitrite or elemental sulfur in the absence of oxygen. A phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the isolate was closely related to Oceanithermus profundus, belonging to the phylum ‘Deinococcus–Thermus’ (sequence similarity 99·5 %). However, strain St55BT differed from O. profundus in terms of usage of electron donors, cellular fatty acid profile and DNA G+C content. In addition, a DNA–DNA hybridization test indicated low relatedness between the isolate and O. profundus. For the reasons given above, the name Oceanithermus desulfurans sp. nov. is proposed for strain St55BT (=NBRC 100063T=DSM 15757T).

In a paper which was read before the Institute of Actuaries on the 31st May, 1852, “On the Uniform Action of the Human Will, as exhibited by its Mean Results in Social Statistics,” I drew attention to the remarkable regularity with which marriages are contracted in any country, and the very small limits of difference from the average number which appear from year to year. The observations made by M. Quetelet in Belgium, from 1825 to 1845, showed that the extreme difference in the total number of marriages was little more than half the difference of the extremes in the number of deaths in the same period. Such a conclusion seemed to imply that the subject was worthy of more research. If the law of mortality can be so accurately defined at different ages, that pecuniary interests, amounting to some hundreds of millions sterling, can be valued and adjusted with the greatest nicety, it is reasonable to conclude that the labour of a statistical inquiry into the proportion of marriages at different ages would be rewarded with the discovery of some equally defined law, since the variations from year to year in a given number of facts appear, from a large number of observations, to be even less than in the former case. It is true that, as human life must fail at some time, from the natural decay of the powers of life, every interval of age after man has once attained maturity may be expected, under ordinary circumstances, to show a steady and progressive increase in the liability to disease and death. On the other hand, it may be, argued that marriage is the exercise of the free will of man—that consequently, it does not depend on the age or period of life, but on the arbitrary exertion of those feelings or mental and moral qualities which are not subject to natural laws, or at least not to such laws as we are able to express numerically in the same manner we can the law of mortality in any given population. If we consider, however, marriage as, in one sense, the natural provision for the preservation or increase of the species, and the counteraction to the law of mortality by which the species would perish, we should not be surprised to find that, however imperceptibly to individuals, there is a tendency to obey some unknown law of nature which at the period of maturity would lead to the maximum of marriages, and gradually diminish with age in the same manner as the tendency to disease and death increases with age. The motives and caprices of individuals would only have the same effect on the general results which the different habits of individuals may have in increasing or diminishing the rate of mortality. Accordingly, M. Quetelet, in a comparison of the number of marriages in Belgium for each five years of age after 21, for both sexes, for a period of five years consecutively, showed that the average results in each period scarcely differed at all from year to year. The table is so remarkable, that I have reduced the proportion to 100 of the total marriages in each year, and present it to show the small differences which will then be seen to prevail.

ABSTRACTThe kinetics of Ge lateral overgrowth on SiO2 with line-shaped Si seeds is examined. The growth process is described by the difference between the growth rates of Ge on (100) planes (GR100) and <311> facets (GR311). The theoretical calculations well reproduce the growth kinetics. It is shown that narrowing the line-seeds helps Ge coalescence and flat film formation.

It is well known that a principle of uniform seniority applies to mortality tables which follow Gompertz's or Makeham's law, and, in a modified form, in the case of certain other laws, such as Makeham's second law and the double geometric law. It is natural to inquire what is the most general class of mortality laws to which such a principle applies. In its most general form the uniform seniority principle implies that the value of a joint-life annuity on m lives of different ages is equal to that of a joint-life annuity (possibly computed at a different interest rate) on k lives of equal age, in such a way that the new interest rate i′, the number of substituted lives k, and the difference between the youngest age and the substituted equal age, depend only on the various differences in age between the youngest life and the other original lives, and not on the actual age of the youngest life.


In 1903 I carried out an analysis—referred to here for brevity as A—of the results given by the Kew magnetographs on “quiet” days during the 11 years 1890 to 1900. This investigation brought to light various novel phenomena. It was subsequently shown—in a paper to be referred to as B—that these phenomena are equally true of “quiet” days at Falmouth. Some of the phenomena suggested the possibility of differences of a certain kind between quiet days and other undisturbed days, and between ordinary days and disturbed days. To prosecute this enquiry, it was necessary to make an analysis of the data from all days at Kew from 1890 to 1900. Declination being the element of most practical interest, and least open to instrumental uncertainties, it was decided to treat it thoroughly in the first instance. In measuring the quiet day curves at Kew—a practice instituted in 1890—it has been usual to smooth them when any little irregularities occur, by drawing a free­- hand pencil trace following the general trend. It was decided, with some hesitation, to continue the practice, so that the results from all days should be as strictly comparable as possible with those from quiet days. The nature of the difficulties will be understood from the accompanying diagram. The continuous line curve ABCDEFQRS represents a hypothetical photographic record. The dotted line AB'C'R' represents the smoothed curve. When the object aimed at is the regular diurnal inequality, it will probably be generally conceded that the method of smoothing adopted is satisfactory so far as the wave-like portion ABCDE is concerned, at least so long as the interval of time corresponding to this portion is under an hour. If, how­ever, the times from A to B and from B to C were each an hour, the procedure would be disapproved by some authorities, who would argue that the free-hand curve should always be drawn so that its ordinate at any particular hour should represent the arithmetic mean of an infinite number of ordinates, uniformly distributed in time throughout the preceding and succeeding 30 minutes. It should, however, be remembered that the exact instant when an hour falls is really arbitrary. One observer may use Greenwich time, another local, and if the smoothing were carried out in accordance with the view last mentioned, it might make all the difference which choice happened to have been made. A disturbance such as QBS presents difficulties of another kind. If the time interval from Q to S is only a few minutes, and the general trend of the curve is very clearly shown, and closely similar to that of the average day, there can, I think, be little doubt that the best plan—at least when diurnal inequalities are concerned—is simply to disregard the disturbance altogether. If, however, the time from Q to S is considerable, and the general trend of the curve not clearly shown, the appropriate treatment is difficult to determine.

AbstractThe Si nanowires were synthesized using a novel catalytic thermal reaction under Ar flow. The average diameter is in the range of 50 ∼ 100 nm. They consist of defect-free single-crystalline cubic structure with the [111] growth direction. The thickness of amorphous oxide outer layers was controllable by growth conditions or surface treatment. In order to protect the oxidation, the Si nanowires were coated with boron nitride layer by the reaction of boron oxide mixture with NH3.

Titania pigments are used in molding compounds as a means to improve opacity by increasing the scattering efficiency of the medium and to develop new applications such as liquid crystal displays (LCD) and light emitting diodes (LED). The characteristics of the injection molded products are a function of molding parameters such as gate location and shear rate. In this study, quantitative measures of the particle distribution of titania pigments in polymer composites have been experimentally determined, including area fraction, average diameter, and diameter volume. A 2 × 3 × 3 ANOVA test has been conducted to assess the statistical significance of these parameters. This study deals with the size and spatial distribution of the particles. The important parameters calculated based on the Feret’s diameter are diameter-volume (dv), diameter-number (dn), and area fraction (AF). The term diameter-volume (dv) has been used to give greater significance to the large particles and thus ‘large’ indicates more and/or larger particles. The parameters have been calculated by using Image-J image processing software. MINITAB has been used to assess the statistical significance of these parameters. The results show that titania particles are not uniformly distributed within the final molded parts and they vary along the molding (longitudinal) and transverse directions of plastic flow. The difference of pigment area fraction and diameter volume at different locations within a final molded part has a significant effect on the percentage reflectance of the surface.

The solidification experiments about macrosegregation formation of the Al-10%Bi hyper monotectic alloys under gravity conditions have been carried out. The results showed that the average diameter of the Bi-rich droplets linearly increases and the number density of the Bi-rich droplets exponentially decreases with solidification time under the gravity condition. Because of gravity settling and collisions coagulation between the droplets, area fraction of Bi-rich increased rapidly in the bottom of samples during early solidification. It’s easy to form Bi-rich layer at the bottom of the sample. The analysis demonstrates that nucleation and diffusion growth of drops are the dominant factors influencing the solidification microstructure during the early solidification and the same distribution of Bi-rich in different locations of sample. As the solidification process, gravity migration and collision coagulation beginning to play the leading role, lead to the difference in the distribution of Bi-rich droplets in different locations of sample 90%e5%a2%9e%e5%a4%a7&tjType=sentence&style=&t=increases+gradually" increases gradually in the same time. It caused macrosegregation of the final solidification microstructure under the gravity condition.
