The objective of this research is to examine the validity and reliability of the instrument for measuring the business strategy and organizational culture in pharmaceutical retailers in Peninsular Malaysia context. To date, the performance of the organizations had been studied by the researchers. However, there are still a limited number of studies done in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly among small retailers in Peninsular Malaysia. Thus, the study to examine of this area is needed and to examine the validity and reliability of the instrument is considered as the first step to facilitate further studies. The survey method was adopted for this study. A pilot test data from 30 respondents were collected and tested using factor analysis, construct validity, and reliability using SPSSV19. The results show that the instrument has a certain degree of reliability and validity and itis suitable for a study in Malaysia context. Hence, future studies can extend this finding and conduct a full scale study to establish empirical relationship between the study variables.

While empirical studies have found that certain organizational factors (such as culture) do influence the innovativeness of firms, little attention has been directed towards the effect of firm size on the innovativeness among housing developers operating in Malaysia. This paper therefore, examines the moderating effect of firm size on the relationship between organizational culture and innovativeness among housing developers in Malaysia. We adopted the proportionate stratified random sampling to collect data from the micro, small, medium and large housing developers operating in Peninsular Malaysia. We received 183 valid questionnaires out of 504 questionnaires distributed, yielding 36.3% response rate. While organizational culture was found to be significant in explaining the innovativeness, firm size significantly moderated the relationship. The findings in this paper have been complementary to the existing body of knowledge and contribute to future studies on innovativeness in the housing industry.

Abstract Purpose of the article Knowledge has been considered as the strategic assets and become the source of competitive advantage in organizations. Knowledge management thus receives the extraordinary attention from the top management. Many organizational factors have influences on knowledge management practices. This paper attempts to explore the empirical relationship between knowledge management and organizational culture in the specific situation of China’s commercial banking industry. Methodology/methods The relationship between knowledge management and organizational culture is quantitatively investigated by surveying bank managers. The scale of SECI modes is used to measure knowledge management process and the scale of Denison Organizational Culture Survey (DOCS) is used to measure organizational culture. We explore the underlying relationship by employing the statistical analyses such as correlation, regression and structural equation modeling. Scientific aim The research aims at testing the relationship between knowledge management and organizational culture, and furthermore if there exist linkages between cultural traits and SECI modes. Findings The results of the empirical study confirm the great and positive effect that organizational culture has on knowledge management. Different cultural traits contribute to different SECI modes. Conclusions For obtaining successful knowledge management practices in organizations, it is better to concern about the relationship between knowledge management and organizational culture. The limitation in the paper is the sampling size, which will be solved by an industry-wide survey in our future research.

This study aimed to examine whether organizational size plays a role as a moderator of the relationship between    halal standards practices and organizational performance. The study was also conducted to look at organizational performance differences for multinationals and medium-sized enterprises among halal food entrepreneurs in Malaysia. A total of 241 organizations through the Internal Halal Committee for the multinational (n = 69) and medium-sized enterprises (n = 172) in Malaysia were involved as respondents in the cross-sectional survey method using selected survey tools. Reliability and validity of the questionnaire were performed and cronbach's alpha values were within the generally accepted range (0.87 to 0.94). The data were analyzed using IBM Statistical Package For Social Science (SPSS) software version 21.0 The study findings show that i) organizational size acts as a moderator between the relationship between halal standard practices for halal operations and organizational performance; ii) significant differences in organizational performance for multinationals and medium-sized enterprises. Studies have found that organizational performance is influenced by a chain that interacts with each other starting from input, which then translates into process and ultimately results that are also supported by internal control of the organization. Indeed, the aspect of the practice of halal standards should be given attention by all parties in making Malaysia a halal hub that remains international. At the same time, further studies on halal food should also take into account the scope, methodology and respondents of the research involved in developing knowledge in this area.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the performance consequences of misalignment among business strategy, organizational configurations and management accounting systems (MAS). Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted a questionnaire survey to collect data and test the hypotheses developed in this study. The authors sent the questionnaires to the accounting and finance managers of the manufacturing companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. The authors received 259 responses from a total of 579 questionnaires sent or a 44.73% response rate. This study excludes 36 responses for further analyzes due to incomplete responses (five responses) and responses from lower-level employees (31 responses). The remaining 223 responses are used for statistical analyzes. Findings This study hypothesizes and finds that misalignments among business strategy, leadership style, organizational culture and MAS are negatively associated with both financial and non-financial performance. Research limitations/implications The study has three limitations. First, the authors intentionally collect data from the manufacturing industry to minimize the effect of data heterogeneity. To improve the generalizability of the study, future research might consider using data from other industries. Second, the study measures business strategy based on respondents’ perception of their companies’ strategy using indicators representing either product differentiation or cost leadership strategy. Future studies might use different ways of measuring business strategy using more objective empirical proxies such as research and development expenditures or premium price capability. Finally, this study conducts a survey and measures all the variables in a single period. Future studies might use a longitudinal approach to investigate the evolution of companies’ strategies and their impact on leadership styles, organizational commitment and MAS. Practical implications The results of the study will help companies in their search for senior executives, in building their organizational culture and in implementing their MAS. The study suggests that product differentiation companies should search for transformational leaders that empower their subordinates to take initiative and encourage innovative ideas in performing their tasks. In regard to MAS, the results suggest that product differentiation companies should implement broad focus MAS that emphasize the balance between financial and non-financial factors. By contrast, cost leadership companies should search for transactional leaders who emphasize on completing tasks on hand effectively and efficiently. In regard to MAS, the findings suggest that cost leadership companies will benefit more from using narrow focus MAS such as formal planning and budgeting, variance analyzes and cost-volume-profit analyzes. Social implications The findings of the study suggest that product differentiation companies should build a flexible culture that encourages subordinates to take the risk and effectively manage opportunities and challenges through changes and innovation. Furthermore, cost leadership companies should build a controlled culture that promotes adherence to policies and procedures to minimize costs and increase efficiency. Originality/value This paper introduces to the management and accounting literature the concept of fit among competitive strategy, leadership style, organizational culture and MAS and uses the two-stage method proposed by Ittner and Larcker (2001) to measure the degree of misalignment among business strategy and its contextual variables and, in turn, examines the impacts of the misalignment on financial and non-financial performance.
