Background: Foodborne illnesses linked to fresh produce has been on the rise in recent years. This increase in illnesses pose a massive burden to the healthcare system. One way to prevent this is through educating the public the importance of handwashing produce. There are many studies that have tested ways of washing and sanitizing fresh produce to reduce surface pathogens. However the average consumer mainly hand washes produce before consuming it. Thus this study intends to test the efficacy of hand washing by testing surface ATP on apples before and after they have been washed. Methods: Apples were purchased from the bulk section of a super market. ATP swabs were used to test the concentration of ATP on the surface of the apples. The values were recorded. All the apples were hand washed under running tap water for 15 seconds and the surface ATP concentration were obtained and recorded. The values were then compared to draw a conclusion. Results: The results show that there is statistically significant reduction in surface ATP values on apples after washing them (mean ATP value of 33.2) compared to before washing them (mean ATP value of 116.67). The p-value obtained was 0.00033 when α = 0.05. Conclusion: This study was able to conclude that there was a significant reduction in surface ATP values following handwashing of the apples. There was an observed 60% reduction in the mean values of ATP of before and after hand washing. In conclusion, hand washing apples do provide an adequate reduction of surface ATP values thus attaining surface cleanliness.

Background: The recent Vibrio parahaemolyticus outbreak in the summer of 2015 highlighted that shellfish tags are one of the key pieces of information used to trace back and determine the source of a foodborne outbreak or illness associated with raw or uncooked shellfish. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, all shellfish tags must meet the requirements stated in the Section 7.3 of the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP). Non-compliant tags may hinder national and regional regulatory agencies from identifying problems in harvest locations and at the processors, and further impede provincial control measures. As a result of the national outbreak, the BC Center for Disease Control (BCCDC), Ministry of Agriculture and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), as well as health authorities and Environmental Health Officers (EHO) have been involved in a variety of actions and interventions to improve compliance. These include efforts to promote education and to improve control and surveillance of V. parahaemolyticus and other shellfish associated illnesses. This study examined the effectiveness of health agencies’ interventions to improve shellfish tag compliance rates to Section 7.3 of the CSSP by comparing the numbers of shellfish tags in compliance before and after the interventions that were implemented in 2016. Methods: 120 randomly selected shellfish tags were grouped into “Before” and “After” interventions. By assessing the date of processing, 60 tags collected before September 2016 were placed into the “Before” group. Another 60 tags collected after September 2016 were placed into the “After” group. Within each group, shellfish tags were individually analyzed to determine whether the tag met or exceeded the required quality, information, and type and quantity criteria. Shellfish tags were considered “Compliant” if they completely fulfill 10 components embodied in the criteria, whereas shellfish tags that failed to meet all the components were labeled “Non-compliant”. Results: Based on the statistical analysis conducted on the data, there was a greater proportion of compliant shellfish tags post-intervention compared to pre-intervention. The Pearson’s Chi-square test confirmed that there was a statically significant association (p-value = 0.000) between the numbers of shellfish tags in compliance and the interventions that were implemented after the outbreak. Conclusion: The results have demonstrated that the interventions implemented by numerous regulatory authorities resulted in greater compliance to Section 7.3 of the CSSP. Public health regulators including the Ministry of Agriculture and the CFIA, as well as BCCDC and EHOs should continuously be involved in a variety of actions, such as promoting education at the processor and retail level and also implementing interventions to improve compliance. By doing so, successful interventions and increased compliance rates will lead to rapid identification of shellfish-related illnesses or outbreaks and facilitate control measures that can expeditiously remediate public health issues.

Background and Purpose: Although the number of recyclers and amount of accepted materials and their contaminants has increased over the decades, the adequate provision of hand washing equipment to mitigate the transfer of infectious agents at recycling depots has not been well studied. Minimal Standard (MS) depots and STAR-Rated (SR) depots are inspected by Encorp Pacific (Canada) auditors, not health inspectors, and claim to provide adequate hand hygiene equipment. This study compared the adequate provision of essential hand washing equipment at MS and SR depots in Metro Vancouver to determine if they met public health standards. Methods: Inspections of presence/absence of essential hand washing equipment (tap with running water, soap in soap dispenser, hand drying equipment and signage) were carried out at 35 depots throughout Metro Vancouver (Vancouver West End to Abbotsford). Depots recorded with all components were assigned a Pass grade; depots with any one missing component or more were assigned a Fail grade. MS/SR and Pass/Fail grade was analyzed using Chi-squared test on NCSS 9 Statistical Software (NCSS). Results: Of the 35 depots surveyed, fails were present in both MS depots and SR depots. Very few depots had signage. Main reasons for Fails included broken hand dryers and lack of soap. All depots with hand wash stations had running water. Pearson’s Chi-square results for observed Pass/Fail and MS/SR depots compared to expected values were unable to reject null hypothesis (P-value 0.911 > 0.05) even when provision of signage was excluded as a criterion (P-value 0.537 > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no association between depot standard rating and provision of essential hand washing equipment. Lack of signage failed 74.3% of depots but excluding signage from the criteria failed 34.3% of depots. Hand washing is important in mitigating risk of infection from hand contamination from household recyclables and those sorted from waste. Inspecting depots and educating operators from a public health viewpoint may increase provision of essential hand washing equipment and increase hand washing compliance in public users.
