Rhizophagus irregularis is an arbuscular mycorrhiza fungus that can enhance plant nutrition and reduce transplant shock on seedlings. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of this fungus on the quality of cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) seedlings. A greenhouse float system experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three treatments. The treatments included the application of 40, 80 and 120 fungus spores per L of nutrient solution (AMF1, AMF2 and AMF3, respectively). The evaluation was performed based on the agronomic characteristics of the seedlings (root and stem length and weight, stem diameter), N and P content, survival rate, and the Dickson’s quality index (DQI). Results indicated that root length and stem dry weight were significantly increased (by 34.14% and 21.4%, respectively) in the AMF3 treatment. The biomass of the seedlings’ roots, the fresh weight and the N content were not affected by the AMF. On the contrary, survival rate, P content and DQI were significantly increased in AMF3 (by 5%, 24.3% and 12.4% respectively). Overall, our findings suggest that the application of high doses of Rhizophagus irregularis (AMF3) on float system-produced cannabis seedlings results in a considerable increment of their quality.

It was aimed to verify the effect of different methodologies of osmopriming on physiological quality of gherkin seeds. Prior, it has been characterized the initial profile of the gherkin seeds. Then, the seeds were osmoprimed in gerboxes containing two blotter papers wetted with osmotic solutions in a volume equal to three times the paper dry weight and kept in BOD at 15 °C. After the priming, the seeds were dried at room temperature for 48 hours. Then, the following variables were evaluated: seeds moisture content, percentage of germination, percentage of emergence, emergence speed index and electrical conductivity. The analyses of variances were realized according to a randomized design in a factorial scheme 3 x 2 x 4: three solutes (polyetilene glycol 6000 - PEG, potassium nitrate - KNO3 and PEG + KNO3), two osmotic potentials (-0.55 and -1.10 MPa) and four times of priming (24, 48, 72 and 96 hours), followed by analyses of regression. It is concluded that the priming has no effect on germination and affects positively the vigor of the gherkin seeds lots; osmopriming with potassium nitrate is effective in improving the physiological quality of gherkin seeds lot.

Parsley seeds are commercialized without classification by size during processing, unlike other crops. This classification procedure allows the standardization of seed size for high precision in sowing, disposal of unwanted material, and selection of high quality seeds. The aim of this study was to verify the effect of seed size on germination, vigor, and yield performance of two parsley cultivars. Seeds from eight lots of parsley of ‘Portuguesa’ and ‘Chacareira’ cultivar were separated into three size classes, represented by the seeds retained in the sieves of 0.84, 1.00 and 1.41mm mesh opening. After classification, seeds were evaluated in the laboratory for water content, germination percentage, first count, and thousand seed weight. In the field, the fresh and dry weight of aerial part and the final number of plants (stand) were evaluated after 78 days of sowing. The experimental design was the completely randomized design in an 8 x 3 factorial scheme (eight lots and three sieve opening) with four replicates, for both cultivars. Data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance and means were compared using Tukey test at 5% probability level. It was concluded that the parsley seeds separated by the 1.41 mm sieves showed higher vigor, and consequently, greater success in stand establishment at the field than those separated by other sieve size. The use of sieves in the classification of parsley seeds helps in obtaining lots with superior physiological quality.

It is essential that tests for evaluating seed vigour be faster and increasingly efficient to enable precise differentiation among batches. In this way, it is possible to evaluate the quality of seeds based on the anaerobic metabolism of cells when exposed to environments lacking oxygen. Thus, the objective of this study was to establish methodology for evaluating the viability and vigour of 3 lots of cowpea (Amendoim cultivar) seeds using the ethanol test. The treatments were carried out in a completely randomized design with four replications. For the test, 25 seeds were stored in hermetically sealed PET (Polyethylene the Ethylene) bottles containing 40 ml of distilled water and subjected to 3 soaking times in distilled water (6, 24, and 48 h) at a controlled temperature of 40°C in a germinator. The amount of ethanol produced was quantified with the aid of an adapted breath analyser. The results are expressed as mg L-1; these data were then compared with data for the following: germination; the first germination count; the total length, root length and shoot length of the seedling; dry weight of the seedling; emergence in the field; emergence speed index; and electrical conductivity. The experimental design was completely randomised, and the data were subjected to analysis of variance and correlation analysis. The results were compared using the Tukey test at 5% probability. Measurement of ethanol after 6 or 48 h of soaking at 40°C was effective for determining the viability and vigour of cowpea seeds. As ethanol test results have high correlation with germination and vigour test results, this approach is a viable alternative for analysts and seed producers.

A study was conducted in the Farm Machinery and Postharvest Technology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur in the irrigated dry season (Boro) of 2012-13. It was aimed at identifying the optimum seed rate of different graded rice variety for mat type seedlings preparation and suitable seedling adjustment option of the rice trans planter to maintain required number of seedlings dispensed per stroke by the rotary picker of the trans planter. Walk behind type 4-rows rice trans planter (DP 480) was used to conduct the study. The experiment was followed as two factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Three categories of rice variety as short and bold grain (cv. BR3), medium and slender grain (cv. BRRI dhan28) and extra-long and slender grain (cv. BRRI dhan50) were considered as main factor whereas seed rate of 100, 120, 130, 140, 150 and 160g pertray (280×580×25 mm) were considered as sub-factor. Irrespective of rice category, seedling emergence decreased with the increase of seed rate. Seedling emergence decreased from 77 to 56, 74 to 57 and 77 to 54% in BR3, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 respectively with the increase of seed rate from 100 to 160g per tray. Seed rate did not affect the seedling height significantly whereas it was varied with the rice verities only and BRRI dhan50 produced higher seedling length. However, number of leaf, stem thickness and shoot dry weight decreased and root-shoot ratio increased significantly with the increase of seed rate. The highest shoot dry weight was observed in BR3 followed by BRRI dhan50. Seedling strength also decreased with the increase of seed rate. The highest seedling strength (0.043 mg cm-1) was observed for the seed rate of 100g of BR3 and the lowest (0.020 mg cm-1) for the seed rate of 160g of BRRI dhan28. The number of seedling increased and percentage of missing hills decreased with the increase of both the seed rate and seedling adjustment option of the rice transplanter irrespective of variety. In case of BR3, seedling dispensed per stroke and percentage of missing hills varied from 4.3 to 5.7 and 6.8 to 7.8 for the seed rates of 140, 150 and 160 g of seeds tray-1 for 5 to 7 seedling adjustment option of the rice transplanter respectively. Seedlings per stroke and percentage of missing hills of BRRI dhan28 for the seed rate of 130, 140 and 150 g of seeds tray-1 was found almost same for 5 to 7 seedling adjustment options of the rice transplanter (4.2 to 6.3 and 5.7 to 9.8). However, there was minimum difference of seedlings per stroke and percentage of missing hills among 120, 130 and 140 g of seeds tray-1 for the option of 4 to 7 (4.0 to 5.6 and 3.9 to 7.8 respectively) for BRRI dhan50. It can be concluded that 140 g of seeds tray-1 for short and bold grain (BR3) and 130 g of seeds tray-1 for medium and slender grain (BRRI dhan28) under the seedling adjustment options of 5 to 7 and 120 g of seeds tray-1 for extra-long and slender grain (BRRI dhan50) under the seedling adjustment options of 4 to 7 may be used for desired seedlings per hill and minimum missing hills along with good quality of seedling.
