Dynamic Comparative Advantage of India and China: A study of Manufacturing Exports

This study analysed the dynamic export competitiveness of Indian manufacturing with China in the world market at HS 2-digit level classification. Dynamic RCA was utilised in this study for 2001-18. The study revealed that India was gaining a better dynamic competitive position of its manufactured exports in the world market than its Chinese counterpart. Besides this, the unfavourable dynamic position of lost opportunity included lesser Indian manufactured exports than China’s. However, China took the lead in including a higher percentage of manufactured products in those dynamic positions that showed relatively higher responsiveness to the declining demand of the world.

The present study discusses the short- and long-run trade patterns of India and China. Applying revealed comparative advantage (RCA) and bilateral RCA, this study specifically tries to find out the pattern of exports and areas of specialization of the economies under study. Major findings suggest that both the countries have been performing well, in terms of merchandise trade exports, over the past few decades, especially since 2000. The export-performing behaviour of India and China with each other, as well as with the world, is seen quite general in nature. In other words, irrespective of their institutional and structural differences, both India and China maintain almost the same upward moving trend with respect to the flow of exports between them and that with the world market. However, once we go from Standard International Trade Classification (SITC) two-digit to SITC four-digit level of analysis, the sample economies reveal their specialized products. At the disaggregate level, India’s export basket is void of food products and raw materials, and it generally contains engineering goods and technologically driven products as advantageous products. The study finds that the areas of specialization are much wider, and the technology-embedded products are larger for China as compared to India. JEL: F10, F11, F43

Fish is today one of the most important commercial material. In our market as in the world market they are present in fresh and manufactured products. Fish products always have some risk. They could be contaminated with dangerous chemicals and biological contaminants. From biological originated polutions Aflatoxin and other Mycotoxins are very dangerous. The contamination starts in fish ponds, in canals and swamps. Also, the contamination occurs at storage and prepararation of fish materials. It is very important to recognize hygienically correct fish material and control fish food and different products from fish by educated inspectors (Vlahovic, 1999).

This article investigates the impact of countries' comparative advantage following (CAF) strategy on their integration into the world markets for manufactured exports. The analysis uses a panel dataset of 113 countries (comprising both developed and developing countries) over the period 1995-2015. Based on the two-step system Generalized Method of Moments approach, the findings have shown that the CAF development strategy induces a rise in countries' share of manufactured export products in the world's total manufactured exports. Interestingly, the magnitude of this positive effect of the CAF strategy increases as the size of inward FDI stock rises. An important implication of this analysis is that countries that promote industries in line with their comparative advantage are likely to enjoy a greater integration into the world market for manufactured export products, notably when they experience a greater size of inward FDI stock.

The aim of this study is to examine the export performance and competitiveness of Pakistan's toy exports by using different indices of revealed comparative advantage. The data were looked at from the International Trade Centre (ITC) for Pakistan’s toys exports during 2004-2020. The results of this study show that Pakistan enjoyed a comparative advantage in exporting toys to the world market during 2004-2020, because the RCA index is greater than 1. The positive values of RSCA and LnRCA indicate that Pakistan had a CA in the concerned sector during 2004-2020. The study also observed that Pakistan had a competitive advantage by employing Vollrath index (RCA#). In addition, the revealed competitiveness index (RC) indicates that Pakistan experienced competitiveness in the toy export sector. The RMA index shows that Pakistan also enjoyed a comparative advantage in the imports of toys during 2004-2020. This means that Pakistan also imports these products from other economies of the world. The index of RTA describes that Pakistan had a net comparative advantage in this sector during analysis. TBI illustrates that Pakistan is the net-exporter in the toys and games sector in the global economy. Pakistan's toy manufacturers need to find new innovative and technologically advanced methods to stimulate domestic toy production and exports.

In the midst of stiff global competition among industrialized countries focuses on how Nigeria, as a developing economy develop policies and strategies for her exports competitiveness for sustainable development. To achieve this, this paper has estimated Nigeria’s exports competitiveness in the World market by utilizing the Bound Testing approach. The econometric estimate suggest that Nigeria’s exports are less competitive in the United Kingdom but highly competitive in the United States, Japan and Canada. Nigeria’s exports are strongly influenced by the level of foreign income and exchange rate at least for the United States, Japan and Canada. The study thus recommends amongst other things that, the Nigerian government should vis the foreign currencies and further develop and upgrade local industries in order to improve the productivity of these industries for better competition in the global market. The study thus recommends amongst others, that Nigeria should concentrate in the exportation of her goods and services to countries where her products are highly competitive, such as United State, Japan and Canada.

China's socioeconomic accumulation in the last 30 years has been probably one of the most outstanding global developments and has resulted in massive new challenges for core and periphery countries. The article examines how China's rapid and massive integration to the world market has posed new challenges for countries such as Mexico - and most of Latin America - as a result of China's successful exportoriented industrialization. China's accumulation and global integration process does, however, not only question and challenges the export-possibilities in the periphery, but also the global inability to provide energy in the medium term.
