Since 1998, Indonesia has experienced a major transformation in the relationship between the rulers and the ruled. State–society relationships were previously subject-object, military-civilian, or superior-inferior. In other words, the state played a central role in all matters, while civil society ‘Muhammadiyah’ was limited to political and social activities. This tended to negatively impact community involvement in prevention and risk-reduction for natural disasters. This paper examines the role of civil society in disaster management in Indonesia. It does so in relation to the particular example of Yogyakarta, a special province where local values traditionally have more inherent authority than government-imposed law. The paper further discusses how there are important lessons for the future to be drawn from a Yogyakarta case study of how the national government has generally failed to build a private–public partnership and state–society relationship to deal with natural disasters based on local community needs.

From the analysis, it is found that there were still many challenges experienced by local communities in exploiting job opportunities, such as the incompatibility between labor qualifications required by the tourism industry and the capacity of local communities. The lack of capacity of human resources resulted from the low quality of education, the lack of knowledge and skills in the tourism industry, especially the hospitality, and the attitude and behavior or work ethic of the local community itself. The success or failure of cooperative relationship between the company and its human resources is inseparable from the role of desa adat. The role of desa adat here is to provide job-related information required by the company to assist the prospective workforce to obtain a job. The tourism sector is expected to build motivation and increase work productivity for the community in order to encourage the growth of the economic sector.

The article provides a scientific analysis of the issues of spiritual education and attention to the ideal person in the family as one of the most pressing problems in the process of globalization. We know that since ancient times in the East, great attention has been paid to the education of children. The fact that the morality of parents in the family, an example for children, is the basis for the strength of the family and the further prosperity of society is confirmed by the facts about how young people are being brought up and educated today. They say that the parent is an immortal figure in the family, the teacher is the ideal person. Especially in the family it was emphasized that the future of the country in the spiritual morality of mothers and children depends on how young people are being brought up and educated today. Therefore, every parent, teacher and educator must see in the image of every child, first of all, an ideal person. Jewish Cemeteries in Wrocław – Places (Un)known. Knowledge and Beliefs of Young Residents of Wrocław The article is based on empirical research, one of the elements of which was to verify the knowledge, beliefs and ideas of young Wrocław residents about the Jewish cemeteries located in the city. The subject of the analysis was, first of all, knowledge of their history, importance for local culture and community; ideas about the role of cemeteries in Jewish culture and customs related to death and funeral. An important aspect was also finding out what the place of cemeteries is and how they are perceived in the local community, do they function in the minds of young people and in what way, are they really known to them and are they associated with the Jewish community living here, or rather perceived as places of memory and museum space.

This perspective article is divided between the account of an emerging youth political activist, Katelyn Higgins, and the subsequent collaborative research project she coordinated. After 10 years of experience in youth political action, Higgins worked with co-authors to develop a qualitative study to explore the processes underlying youth influence over local environmental policymaking. We present findings from that study to supplement her perspective. The study supported fourth and fifth grade teachers by offering a marine debris curriculum which encouraged students to share their knowledge with local community members through environmental activism events. At the first event, students aged 8–10 presented at a town hall meeting; we interviewed 16 adults in attendance. The second “event” was a series of video PSAs (Public Service Announcements) in which students from across the state of North Carolina, United States, explained the harms of marine debris. Those PSAs were emailed to local officials; we conducted follow-up interviews with two officials. Four themes emerged to characterize how adults responded to youth environmental activism: young people were inspiring; adults want to support young people; and adults view young people as able to provide leadership for local action and challenge the establishment. Youth leaders and those looking to support them should be encouraged by these results, as they suggest adults, including local public officials, consider youth voices valuable and uniquely situated to foster productive political processes for addressing marine debris. Future research should continue to explore the degree to which positive feelings expressed by adults translate to action.
