The present work was done to investigate the ability of Yemeni Sider honey to ameliorate the level of blood sugar and lipid profile in rabbits. For this goal 36 rabbits were used, after adaptation period the animals were divided into 6 groups as follows: group 1 and 2 served as control, and other 4 groups were served as treatment groups. Metformin was used as comparison in alloxan –induced diabetic rabbits. After the end of experiment (day 27) our results showed stabilization of sugar level and lipid profile, cholesterol HDL, LDL and triglycerides. We concluded that the use of honey in addition to metformin is more effective and ability of this drug in dealing with the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats.

ABSTRACT Background: A study to investigate the level of the neurobiochemical marker, Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE), at the time of admission and its correlation with the blood sugar level in ischemic stroke patients. Patients and Methods: We investigated 90 patients with complete stroke who were admitted to the Stroke Unit of the Department of Neurology at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences. NSE was measured with commercially available quantitative 'sandwich' enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits obtained from R and D Systems. Hyperglycemia was defined as blood glucose concentration ≥ 7 mmol/L, and measured using the glucose oxidase method immediately. Results: Significantly increased NSE and lipid profile levels were found in ischemic stroke patients as compared to the control. Hyperglycemic ischemic stroke patients had increased levels of NSE, lipid profile, and National Institute of Health stroke scale scores (NIHSS score) compared to normoglycemic ischemic stroke patients. In addition the serum NSE level of hyperglycemic stroke patients was also positively correlated with the blood sugar level (r = 0.734 P < 0.001). Conclusions: Hyperglycemia predicts an increased risk of poor outcome after ischemic stroke and it is reflected by a significantly increased level of Neuron-Specific Enolase.

This study was aimed to analyses the serum Hs-CRP level and fasting Blood Sugar level in patients with Hyperlipidemia in a Super Specialty Teaching Hospital in north Kerala. This was a hospital-based prospective observational study which was conducted to study the status of Hs-CRP and Fasting Blood sugar level on lipid profile status of newly diagnosed Hyperlipidemia patients which was compared with Normal Lipid Profile people. Healthy subjects were recruited as a control group and newly Diagnosed Hyperlipidemia patients were recruited as Test group. Study subjects of both gender in an age group of 30 to 70 were selected for the study. Serum Hs CRP, Fasting Blood sugar and serum lipid profile were estimated after overnight fasting condition. After the biochemical estimation, values were entered in an Excel sheet and level of test and control group was statistically analyzed by using Student's t-test using SPSS software. The values were expressed in Mean ± Standard Deviation (SD) and The status of serum Hs CRP, fasting Blood Sugar and Lipid Profile Parameters were shown a statistically significant difference (p<0.01) between Control and Test groups. The result of the study points out that the elevated level serum Hs-CRP and Fasting Blood Sugar can be used as predictive markers of Hyperlipidemia.

Background: Dyslipidaemias are the major cause of increased atherogenesis. Lycopene is a pigment that imparts red colour to fruits and vegetables like tomatoes. Risk of cardiovascular diseases has been shown to decrease with dietary intake of tomatoes. Although the antioxidant and hypolipidaemic properties of tomatoes have been studied extensively, beneficial effect of pure lycopene supplement as hypolipidaemic is still debatable So, we aimed to evaluate the effect of pure lycopene powder on lipid profile, serum antioxidant enzymes and blood sugar level in hyperlipidaemic rabbits. Methods: Adult male New Zealand White rabbits (1.5-2.5kg) were divided into three groups of six each. Group I-High Fat Diet (HFD) (5ml/kg). Group II-HFD (5ml/kg) + lycopene (10mg/kg) orally. Group III-HFD (5ml/kg) + lycopene (20mg/kg) orally. Blood samples were taken from all rabbits for baseline estimations of serum lipids, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) and blood sugar. Same tests were performed after six weeks. Results: There was significant decrease in the levels of serum TC, LDL-C, TG and VLDL and an increase in serum HDL-C and antioxidant SOD with lycopene administration. However, significant increase in HDL was not seen with lycopene 10mg. TG and VLDL levels were significantly less with 20mg lycopene compared to 10mg lycopene. There was however no change in blood sugar level with lycopene. Conclusions: Pure lycopene supplement showed significant hypolipidaemic and antioxidant activity. However, it did not show significant effect on blood glucose levels.
