Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is one of the EU tools for rural development. Most of the literature on this subject is focused on premium prices and consumers’ willingness to pay for local products, since PDO and other labels aim to provide premium incomes for farmers. Our assumption is that PDO drives unexpected changes of farming styles not only related to processing or market strategies but also related to local resources using and to stablishing of different approach to agriculture and food production. We analyzed the PDO Queso Palmero (La Palma cheese) as a case of a dual label system (brand–certification common label) because it gives us the opportunity to compare farmers involved in a PDO scheme with farmers who works outside such systems. We conclude that private brands are more important than common label certification in price formation, but both are complementary, since PDO reinforces farmers’ efforts to improve quality. Beyond premium price, PDO also drives a radical change in farm structures, since it reconnects products to local resources (grazing vs intensification) and redesigns relationships with markets (shortening and diversifying chains and widening product offer). This change is characterized by implementation of new farming strategies in the context of PDO structure that coexist with classical farming strategies closer to intensification, not only in terms of productivity but also in terms of decoupling from local resources and productive and market specialization. Therefore, PDO is a powerful tool for rural development in a wide sense (resilience, empowerment, local capacity and network formation among others) far beyond its narrow remit of promoting economic growth (local or regional). Therefore, the coupling with local resources and the strength of local network and relationships as source of resilience, knowledge and capabilities improvement, have to be included in performance assessment of GIs in order to broaden the appraisal of role in regional development. Highlights PDO as institution is a powerful tool of farm transformation not only a protection structure of collective heritage or asset. Private brand effect on price is larger than common label effect (PDO label). PDO as institution leads radical changes of goat production systems from more production – oriented toward more market – oriented styles. Market chains and product diversification, focusing on quality, concern about consumers and coupling with local resources are distinctive features of farms involved in PDO.

Abstract Extensive and semi-extensive production based on local swine breeds such as Majorcan Black Pig, Cinta Senese, Gascon, Krškopolje and Turopolje is becoming extremely rare and on the verge of disappearing in Europe. In this context, the main aim of this study was to assess the potential feasibility of marketing strategies to act as guidelines for stakeholders along the supply chain to create and improve added value and match market demands. The sustainability of five production systems was evaluated together with 60 stakeholders representing five local swine breeds, using a World Café (WC) method combined with an Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP). The results showed that the proposed strategies could differ slightly depending on each system, while the product strategy was a common marketing priority for most of the stakeholders and represented all the systems evaluated. Diversifying production toward quality, innovative products, enhanced standardization, and quality labeling or seals of guarantee, such as the protected geographical indication or the protected designation of origin, would contribute to the sustainability of these chains. Advertising the storytelling of the meat products and emphasizing their healthier properties were also considered as positive strategies. To this effect, promotion should involve improving knowledge of the local systems and raising the profile of the meat products via public relations (networks, web pages, food and gastronomic events, workshops and so on) in the Hotels, Restaurants and Catering (HORECA) sector, stores selling top-quality products and local food shops. Better showcasing of these products and keeping the price in the premium segment would indirectly help the primary sector. By way of conclusion, other more developed local swine systems could be strong competitors, hence it is extremely important to effectively identify and trace all autochthonous swine breed products throughout the production chain. Furthermore, the entire chain must place greater emphasis on grazing (extensive or semi-extensive), the origin of the swine and their meat products. However, of utmost importance is cooperation between farms, firms and institutions.

Abstract Geographical indications (GIs) are valuable attributes that enhance the competitiveness of agri-food products, generate added value and revitalize rural environments. The aim of this work was to analyze the attributes spring fruit consumers associate with GIs when they decide to purchase these products. Moreover, the changes in these associations with the increasing distance between the region of production and the place of consumption were also evaluated. We specifically analyzed two GIs used for spring fruits: the protected geographical indication for Mountain Cherries from Alicante (Spain) and the protected designation of origin for Loquats from Callosa d'En Sarriá (Spain). Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. The results show the significant association in consumers' minds between the preference for GI fruit and the importance attributed to the place of production (origin). The association of different attributes with the GI fruit label is product dependent as the number of attributes associated in the case of cherries (origin, organic, color and variety) is higher than for loquats (origin and variety). Regarding the distance between the production area and the place of consumption, our findings suggest that the closer the consumer is to the GI area of influence, the more attributes they associate with these labels. In this regard, increasing the knowledge of the GI labels beyond their area of influence could boost the demand for these products as consumers would be aware of the different quality attributes concentrated in that label.

The purpose of the article is to substantiate the innovation and investment principles of green tourism in rural areas in the context of decentralization with a combination of production systems in order to explore opportunities and provide proposals for further functioning of the national economy. Methodology research is to use a set of methods: economic-statistical, monographic, system, economic- mathematical, abstract-logical and others. The scientific novelty of the obtained results is the introduction of innovative, economically feasible and research meth- ods with regard to sustainable development of green tourism in rural areas in decentralization, which are associated with the adaptation of theories, principles and rules of great importance for sustainable rural development of green tourism in the context of global transformations. Conclusions. The modern principles of effective functioning of green tourism in rural areas in the conditions of decen- tralization at a combination of production systems are substantiated. The tools of the general research methodology with regard to sustainable development of green tourism in rural areas in the context of decentralization are proposed. Adaptation of a system of theories, principles and rules that are essential for the formation of sustainable rural development are related. <p>Biomassa tanaman perkebunan dapat dimanfaatkan untuk pangan, pakan, dan bioenergi. Hasil penelitian dan perkembangan teknologi telah mendorong pemanfaatan biomassa bagian-bagian tanaman tersebut. Tanaman perkebunan memiliki potensi besar untuk menghasilkan biomassa yang dapat dimanfaatkan dalam pengembangan energi terbarukan. Pemetaan potensi biomassa telah banyak dilakukan pada tanaman perkebunan, seperti pada: tebu, kakao, kelapa sawit, kemiri sunan, jarak pagar, kopi, kelapa dalam, karet dan teh. Pengembangan sistem produksi pangan dan biomassa untuk pembangkit energi melalui sistem multi tanam berbasis komoditas perkebunan telah dikembangkan.  Di Kabupaten Aceh Timur telah dilakukan pengembangan sistem agroindustri juga memanfaatkan semua produk samping, mendorong daur ulang dan pemanfaatan residu. Pemanfaatan potensi bioenergi masih dihadapkan pada berbagai kendala distribusi, kontinuitas pasokan bahan dan aspek ekonomi. Menyikapi hal tersebut langkah strategis dapat dilakukan melalui: analisis neraca karbon, alokasi lahan, pemanfaatan lahan, pemanfaatan sumber daya secara berkelanjutan, dukungan teknologi, fokus pada nilai tambah yang tinggi dan perbaikan tata kelola. Selanjutnya perbaikan pada pengembangan sistem pangan energi terpadu dapat ditempuh melalui: (1) sosialisasi dari inovasi teknologi, (2) membentuk kawasan-kawasan pertanian terpadu di daerah sentra pengembangan dan (3) memperkuat kelembagaan petani untuk mengembangkan agroindustri.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong><strong> </strong>ABSTRACT</p><p align="center">Biomass from estate crops can be used for food, feed, and bioenergy. The results of research and technological developments have encouraged the utilization of biomass of these plant parts. Plantation crops have great potential to produce biomass that can be utilized in the development of renewable energy. Mapping of biomass potential has been carried out in plantation crops, such as: sugar cane, cocoa, oil palm, candlenut, jatropha, coffee, deep coconut, rubber, and tea. The development of food and biomass production systems for energy generation through a commodity-based multi-cropping system has been developed. In East Aceh District an agro-industrial system development has also been carried out utilizing all byproducts, encouraging recycling and utilizing residues. The utilization of bioenergy is still faced with various distribution constraints, continuity of material supply and economic aspects. In response to this, strategic steps can be taken through carbon balance analysis, land allocation, land use, sustainable use of resources, technology support, focus on high added value and improved governance. Furthermore, improvements to the development of integrated energy food systems can be pursued through (1) socialization of technological innovations, (2) establishing integrated agricultural areas in plant centers and (3) strengthening farmer institutions to develop agro-industries.</p><p> </p>

In order to survive on the market, resist the challenges of competition, but also the demands of customers, companies are constantly innovating the production process in an effort to improve all the company's activities. One of the production systems that proved to be suitable for continuous improvement and improvement of the production process is Lean production system. It represents the way companies react to the challenges of the present and the future. The Lean production system offers a variety of instruments, and for their implementation and application, managers are at all levels of responsibility and responsibility. Bearing this in mind, it can be said that the Lean production system is part of the management accounting. In addition, it represents a complete philosophy of thinking and action, which results in significant results by adequate application. The condition and the assumption that this management philosophy will lead to proper effectiveness and efficiency and enable them to continually improve in the function of maximizing profits is the authorization of employees to engage in the process of continuous improvement and decision-making. Lean is based on certain principles and philosophies, including customer value, value flow mapping, continuous flow, system requirements, and continuous improvements. Lean focuses on the added value. Lean's principle is a continuous search for perfection, perfection in production and business cooperation, with complete elimination of losses. Companies that implement the Lean Concept are constantly looking for ways to continually improve their efficiency, reduce costs and improve the quality of their products.

Another specific goal is to help create prosperity and comfort in community life. Through this service activity the target team is partners producing products that are safe, hygienic, healthy and halal. The expected target in this activity is the target partners to have new knowledge and skills and utilization of science and technology, including creative marketing through social media (one of which is open stalls), packaging improvements and product diversification to provide product added value, able to compile simple financial reports and managerial business, in order to optimize production, so that there is an increase in income and welfare for partners and the surrounding environment. Through this Community Partnership Program, it is expected that the knowledge, motivation and enthusiasm of partners will increase. This activity is at least able to increase the spirit of entrepreneurship in household business members BAROKAH and RAHMAH.

AbstractThis paper first investigates empirically the relationship between risk aversion and social network structure in a large group of undergraduate students. We find that risk aversion is strongly correlated to local network clustering, that is, the probability that one has a social tie to friends of friends. We then propose a network formation model that generates this empirical finding, suggesting that locally superior information on benefits makes it more attractive for risk averse individuals to link to friends of friends. Finally, we discuss implications of this model. The model generates a positive correlation between local network clustering and benefits, even if benefits are distributed independently ex ante. This provides an alternative explanation of this relationship to the one given by the social capital literature. We also establish a linkage between the uncertainty of the environment and the network structure: risky environments generate more clustered and more unequal networks in terms of connectivity.

PurposeThe paper examines the factors that influence the production of cash flows in a sample of Italian farm accountancy data network (FADN) farms to generate information useful for calibrating policies to support farmers' investments.Design/methodology/approachAn econometric analysis on the sample estimates the influence of structural, economic, commercial and financial variables on CAFFE, i.e. the cash flow that includes the payments to the farmer's resources and the free cash flow on equity (FCFE). The econometric problem of endogeneity is treated by adopting the Hausman test to choose between fixed and random effects models. The results for Italian agriculture and its types of farming (TFs) are examined based on the FCFE/capital depreciation ratio, where FCFE subtracts from CAFFE the opportunity cost payments to the farmer's resources. This ratio identifies TFs with problems of sustainability of the production system.FindingsThe results show that increasing the productive dimension, in particular the endowment of farmland and working capital, is still essential to stimulate the production of cash flows of Italian agriculture. Without this growth, increasing the depreciable capital base is ineffective. FCFE does not compensate for depreciation in several TFs, which in various cases could also improve by improving economic efficiency and commercial position.Research limitations/implicationsAssessing the factors that most influence cash flows can help to better calibrate rural development measures to the territories and farming types that most need public support. Our analysis procedure can be applied to all production systems equipped with farm accounting networks; however, the criteria for rewarding farmer resources and calculating the replacement value of agricultural capital need to be better discussed.Originality/valueThe specification of rural development policies rarely takes into account the financial sustainability conditions of farms, as well as the factors that determine them, in defining the support parameters and the selection criteria for funding. Our approach, based on the analysis of FADN data, considers these aspects and provides ideas for better calibrating public support for investments among agricultural territories, sectors and types of farms.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyusun strategi yang tepat dalam peningkatan nilai tambah andaliman (Zantoxylum Acanthopodium) di Kabupaten Toba Samosir yang mempengaruhi ekonomi pemangku kepentingan. Langkah-langkah yang dilakukan ialah: i) pengumpulan informasi produksi disentra penghasil andaliman yaitu Kecamatan Habinsaran, Bor-bor, Nassau, Lumban Julu, Ajibata, dan Silaen, ii) identifikasi/analisis model rantai pasok iii) menganalisis peran/pengaruh serta pemetaan para pemangku kepentingan iv) analisis nilai tambah setiap mata rantai pada rantai pasokan. Terdapat dua jenis metode yang diaplikasikan dan termasuk dalam deskriptif-eksploratif. Pertama, metode kualitatif mencakup studi literatur dalam memperoleh data/acuan pengerjaan, observasi, wawancara dengan pelaku rantai nilai dan pemerintahan. Kedua, metode kuantitatif dengan perhitungan Hayami untuk mengetahui nilai tambah andaliman. Fakta menunjukkan luas lahan produktif pertanian andaliman ± 62,9 Ha dengan kapasitas produksi sebesar ± 417,2 ton/tahun. Terdapat dua model rantai pasokan yaitu andaliman segar dan olahannya. Kemudian pemetaan rantai nilai dilakukan untuk mengetahui nilai R/C dari margin setiap node rantai pasokan. Saat harga andaliman netral hingga tinggi rentang nilai R/C antara 1,08 hingga 1,73 yang menandakan setiap aktor akan untung. Namun apabila harga andaliman rendah nilai R/C antara 0,85 hingga 1,9 dengan keadaan tersebut ada aktor yang sangat dirugikan atau diuntungkan. Hasil terkait peta rantai nilai mengungkapkan rekayasa nilai andaliman belum optimal terbukti dari produk yang dihasilkan rantai pasokan masih jauh dibawah nilai potensial yang mungkin. Analisis SWOT memberi informasi peluang dan tantangan mengembangkan rantai pasok demi meningkatkan nilai produk andaliman. Akhir penelitian ini ialah rekomendasi strategi peningkatan nilai tambah diantaranya, menambah diversifikasi produk, membuat sentra khusus pengolahan andaliman, dll.   This study aims to develop appropriate strategies for increasing the added value of andaliman (Zantoxylum Acanthopodium) in Toba Samosir Regency which affects the economy of stakeholders. The steps taken are: i) gathering information on production of andaliman producing centers namely Habinsaran, Bor-bor, Nassau, Lumban Julu, Ajibata, and Silaen Districts, ii) identification / analysis of supply chain models iii) analyzing the role / influence and mapping of the parties stakeholder iv) value added analysis of each link in the supply chain. There are two types of methods applied and included in the descriptive-exploratory method. First, the qualitative method includes the study of literature in obtaining work data / references, observations, interviews with value chain actors and government. Second, the quantitative method with Hayami's calculation to find out the added value of andaliman. Facts show that the area of productive land of andaliman is ± 62.9 hectares with a production capacity of ± 417.2 tons / year. There are two supply chain models, namely fresh and processed andaliman. Then the value chain mapping is done to find out the R / C value from the margins of each supply chain node. When the reliable price is neutral to high, the R / C value range is between 1.08 and 1.73, which indicates that each actor will profit. However, if the reliable price is low, the R / C value is between 0.85 to 1.9 with this condition, there are actors who are greatly disadvantaged or disadvantaged. The results related to the value chain map revealed that optimal value engineering has not been proven to be optimal from the products produced by the supply chain are far below the potential potential value. SWOT analysis provides information on opportunities and challenges of developing supply chains to increase the value of andaliman products. The end of this research is a recommendation to increase added value strategies, including increasing product diversification, creating special centers for andaliman processing, etc.

Ukraine produces large amounts of crop residues every year, much which could be utilized to produce biofuel. However, efficient supply chains and system configurations are needed to make such systems efficient and cost effective. One option is to integrate torrefaction, power production and biofuel production into a single, coordinated system. This approach allows for high value product (i.e. biofuel), greater utilization of the energy content of the feedstock, and supply chain efficiency. Initial analyses indicate that revenues can be enhanced through this approach, and further analyses and optimization efforts could identify a sustainable approach to renewable fuel and power production for Ukraine. The question of scale and layout remains of interest as well, and a thorough logistical study is needed to identify the most suitable configuration. Agricultural operations often benefit from smaller scales of operation, whereas fuel production processes tend to operate profitably only at very large scale. Thus, a balance must be struck between the needs of both ends of the supply chain. The processing center concept helps to balance those needs. A system such as this also has potential to synergize with other agricultural production systems, such as the production of animal feed, fertilizer, and other bio-based products. The complexities of the Ukrainian agricultural market will need to be reflected carefully in any model that seeks to assess the system's potential. Presents a concept for coupling thermal pretreatment (torrefaction with biofuel and power production for the transformation of wheat straw into a value added product for Ukraine. Torrefaction provides supply chain savings, while conversion provides added value to the product. This paradigm has potential to utilize a widely produced waste material into a valuable source of energy and possibly other products for the country.
