The corona virus disease, otherwise known as COVID-19, is an extremely communicable and pathogenic viral infection caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which emerged in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and has spread to almost all the countries in the world. The transmission of the virus is through touching of the nose, eyes, or mouth by a finger that has been contaminated through droplets on a surface when a carrier sneezes or coughs. Since the existing fingerprint devices are predominantly contact based, it implies that they can aid in the transmission of the virus. This paper discusses the application of fingerprint devices in notable places with high rate of COVID-19 infection as well as the threats to fingerprint technologies and the countermeasures. The need to change focus and orientation towards contactless biometric technologies as sure solution to the fear and animosity expressed towards contact-based fingerprint technology is also expatiated.

Advent of internet of things (IoT) has significantly enriched the opportunities of crafting state-of-the-art applications of smart connected objects. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are playing a vital role in the development of smart systems for transportation throughout the world. Based on IoT, the internet of vehicles (IoV) paradigm is emerging to revolutionize the field of ITS. In this paradigm, vehicles leverage the use of internet for socializing with other vehicles, infrastructures, passengers, and drivers. This concept of vehicle socialization is referred to as social internet of vehicles (SIoV). This chapter presents the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) perspective of SIoVs by highlighting the latest trends being followed by GCC countries in the broader field ITS. It also provides an insight into opportunities enabled by SIoV applications that can be availed by GCC countries along with the challenges and limitations.

The widespread digitization of technologies, materials, and processes, and the constant use of the internet for communication and consumption, have led to dramatic changes in our lifestyle. We begin Chapter 12 with the internet and social media’s enabling people to better connect with family, friends, acquaintances, and communities. There can be more mutual awareness and closeness. Yet we may never be able to ‘unplug’; the line between work and play can become increasingly blurred. Having no down time is one manifestation of a broader corrosive phenomenon—technology or social media addiction. We shall see how a battle is being waged between those who want to engage us with more seductive user experiences, and those who would counsel a saner life in which technology and media play a more modest role. We then move from electronic communications to the physical world. We shall consider the effect of ubiquitous digital media, especially the so-called Internet of Things, in which almost all objects become digital. Such objects can sense people near them and general aspects of the world. They behave based on what they sense. One form of this is the rapid integration of voice assistants in everyday objects such as speakers and lamps. People can also transcend the real world by moving into virtual worlds, via augmented reality and virtual reality. The former allows the world to be enhanced with computer-generated visuals and sounds, while the latter allows immersion into worlds that are totally synthetic. We look at how people meet one another nowadays, and the increasingly important role of internet dating. For those who find intimacy or romance with people too challenging or insufficiently satisfying, and as robots become more and more lifelike, there are new opportunities for intimacy and for sexual satisfaction using sex robots, a development in which there are passionate advocates on both sides. How we do financial transactions is also changing. Cash is disappearing; money is becoming increasingly digital and intangible. Investors speculate in cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, which are implemented with an ingenious secure networked digital ledger known as blockchain.

With the growing use of internet across the world ,the threats posed by it are numerous. The information you get and share across the internet is accessible, can be tracked and modified. Malicious websites play a pivotal role in effecting your system. These websites reach users through emails, text messages, pop ups or devious advertisements. The outcome of these websites or Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) would often be a downloaded malware, spyware, ransomware and compromised accounts. A malicious website or URL requires action on the users side, however in the case of drive by only downloads, the website will attempt to install software on the computer without asking users permission first. We put forward a model to forecast a URL is malicious or benign, based on the application layer and network characteristics. Machine learning algorithms for classification are used to develop a classifier using the targeted dataset. The targeted dataset is divided into training and validation sets. These sets are used to train and validate the classifier model. The hyper parameters are tuned to refine the model and generate better results

Abstract Background Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) corona virus mediated CoVid19 (corona virus disease 19) pandemic is a global concern. At the present, almost all countries of the world are home to the CoVid19 infection with varying rate.Methodology To understand the role of alcohol consumption and rate of CoVid19 infection, we conducted a comparative statistical analysis using the top CoVid19 infected countries of the world and compared them with per capita alcohol consumption per year. In addition, a Google trend analysis was conducted to understand the sentiments of the people towards the search of alcohol. Results We found that higher alcohol consumption is not proportional to the higher number of CoVid19 infection and deaths. Google trend analysis for search of alcohol for last 12 months was found highest for Australia followed by New Zealand, Ireland, United States, and South Africa, suggesting sentiment of higher alcohol search also not related to the SARS CoV-2 infection and deaths.
