Abstract Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) is an α+β phase-field alloy utilized in many industries due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and near-net shaping capability. Solution treated & aging, and stress relief annealing processes were performed on the samples to increase the strength and % of elongation. The heat-treated samples then thermally cycled for 500 cycles, 1000 cycles, and 1500 cycles to evaluate the microhardness and tensile properties. The presence of martensite and α2 precipitates in the thermally cycled samples was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). In this investigation, at 1000 thermal cycles, all specimens show improvement in both hardness and strength when compared within the cycles. Solution-treated and aging (STA), stress relief annealing (SRA), and without any heat-treatment (WHT) processes have their highest hardness values recorded for 1000 thermal cycles, and the values are 471 HV0.5, 381 HV0.5, and 374.6HV0.5, respectively. For the SRA process, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 925 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 896 MPa have resulted in 1000 cycles. Similarly, at 1000 thermal cycle WHT processed samples yielded UTS of 920 MPa and YS of 885 MPa. STA process samples that are heat-treated for 1000 thermal cycles have better strength properties than SRA and WHT and had a UTS of 1530MPa and YS of 1420MPa. From a ductility point of view, a maximum elongation of 29% for the STA process has resulted. Compared to forged titanium alloy (base metal), an increase of 31% elongation and 41% ultimate tensile strength for solution treated and aging process at 1000 cycles has resulted in this investigation.

In order to obtain high-strength and high-ductility Al–Si–Cu–Mg alloys, the present research is focused on optimizing the composition of soluble phases, the structure and morphology of insoluble phases, and artificial ageing processes. The results show that the best matches, 0.4 wt% Mg and 1.2 wt% Cu in the Al–9Si alloy, avoided the toxic effect of the blocky Al2Cu on the mechanical properties of the alloy. The addition of 0.6 wt% Zn modified the morphology of eutectic Si from coarse particles to fine fibrous particles and the texture of Fe-rich phases from acicular β-Fe to blocky π-Fe in the Al–9Si–1.2Cu–0.4Mg-based alloy. With the optimization of the heat treatment parameters, the spherical eutectic Si and the fully fused β-Fe dramatically improved the ultimate tensile strength and elongation to fracture. Compared with the Al–9Si–1.2Cu–0.4Mg-based alloy, the 0.6 wt% Zn modified alloy not only increased the ultimate tensile strength and elongation to fracture of peak ageing but also reduced the time of peak ageing. The following improved combination of higher tensile strength and higher elongation was achieved for 0.6 wt% Zn modified alloy by double-stage ageing: 100 °C × 3 h + 180 °C × 7 h, with mechanical properties of ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of ~371 MPa, yield strength (YS) of ~291 MPa, and elongation to fracture (E%) of ~5.6%.

Samples of the 6063 (Al-1.09Mg2Si) alloy ingot were melted in a crucible furnace and cast in metal and sand moulds, respectively. Standard tensile, hardness, and microstructural test specimens were prepared from cast samples, solution treated at 520∘C, soaked for 6 hrs, and immediately quenched at ambient temperature in a trough containing water to assume a supersaturated structure. The quenched specimens were then thermally aged at 175∘C for 3–7 hrs. Results show that at different ageing time, varied fractions of precipitates and intermetallics evolved in the specimens’ matrices which affect the resulting mechanical properties. The metal mould specimens aged for four hours (MTA-4) exhibited superior ultimate tensile strength of 247.8 MPa; microhardness, 68.5 HV; elongation, 28.2% . It is concluded that the extent of improvement in mechanical properties depends on the fractions, coherence, and distribution of precipitates along with the type of intermetallics developed in the alloy during ageing process.

The effect of heat setting methods on the structures and mechanical properties of high strength polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibre is studied in this article. The microstructure and mechanical properties of heat treated PVA fibre is investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and single fibre electronic tensile strength tester. Results show that the heat setting method with constant tension is a good heat setting method which can largely enhance the tensile strength of PVA fibre. During the heat setting process, the mechanical properties of PVA fibre are greatly affected by the temperature, tension and setting time. When the temperature is 220°C, tension is 5cN/dtex and setting time is 90sec, the tensile strength of PVA fibre increases from 12.0cN/dtex to 16.4cN/dtex in compare with the PVA fibre without heat setting

The composite materials are replacing the traditional materials because oftheir superior properties such as high tensile strength, low thermal expansion, high strength to weight ratio, low cost, lightweight, high specific modulus, renewability and biodegradability which are the most basic & common attractive features of composites that make them useful for industrial applications. The developments of new materials are on the anvil and are growing day by day. The efforts to produce economically attractive composite components have resulted in several innovative manufacturing techniques currently being used in the composites industry. Generally, composites consist of mainly two phases i.e., matrix and fiber. In this study, woven roving mats (E-glass fiber orientation (-45°/45°,0°/90°, - 45°/45°),UD450GSM)were cut in measured dimensions and a mixture of Epoxy Resin (EPOFINE-556, Density-1.15gm/cm3), Hardener (FINE HARDTM 951, Density- 0.94 gm/cm3) and Acetone [(CH3)2CO, M= 38.08 g/mol] was used to manufacture the glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite by hand lay-up method. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, SEM analysis, hardness test, density tests are evaluated.

In this work, the special master alloys containing aluminum and TiB2 powder with bimodal particle size distribution in three mixture compositions are prepared. The master alloys are infused into the melts using an external ultrasound source. The castings with particles had smaller grain sizes than the initial castings without particles. It is found that the hardness, yield strength, and ultimate tensile strength reach higher values with an increase in the relative elongation of the cast alloys with added particles. A warm rolling mode is employed for the studied alloys to obtain sheet blanks. It is shown that the staged shrinkage of the billets up to deformation of 80 % with periodic heating up to 300 °C allows one to obtain defect-free sheet products. The structure of the rolled sheet-alloys is characterized by the plate-shaped grains elongated along the rolling direction with pockets of submicron-sized grains in between. The strength properties of the studied rolled alloys exceeded those of the cast alloys. In the case of the rolled alloys, an increase in the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and ductility is revealed for the alloys with particles as compared to the ones with no particles added.

This work covers mixing of unsaturated polyester (un- polyester) with starch powders as polymer blends and study the effects of irradiation by UV-acceleration on mechanical properties of its. The unsaturated polyester was mixing by starch powders at particle size less than (45 µm) at selected weight fraction of (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3%). These properties involve ultimate tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation percentage, flexural modulus, flexural strength, fracture toughness, impact strength and hardness. The results illustrate decrease in the ultimate tensile strength at and elongation percentage, while increasing modulus of elasticity, with increasing the weight ratio of starch powder to 3 % weight fraction, whereas the maximum value of hardness and flexural, impact properties happened at 1 % weight fraction for types of polymer blends.

Characterized by light weight and high strength, cold-drawn galvanized cable wires are widely applied in all kinds of prestressed structures and cable structures. Investigation shows that cables are sensitive to corrosion. Severe corrosion of cables results in cable replacement which are costly, and even more, collapse of the whole bridge. In this paper, several tests were carried out to present the crack growth of wire in stress corrosion in different solutions. In particular, as Cl-, OH-, SO42- and NH4+ have major effect on stress corrosion in seawater and acid rain, these four kinds of ions are selected in tests. And all four kinds of corrosive solutions are tested with the concentration of 1.5 bsp and 3 bsp respectively. Effects on ultimate tensile strength and sensitivity of cable wires are different for each of chosen ions, and the increasing concentration for the same solution would drop ultimate tensile strength and the modulus of cable wires.

Effects of T6 artificial aging heat treatment on microstructure, microhardness and ultimate tensile strength of Al-4.93 wt% Si-3.47 wt% Cu alloy were investigated. The T6 age hardening treatment consists of solution treatment at 500±5°C for 8 hours followed by quenching into hot water at 80°C and artificial aging at 150, 170, 200 and 230°C for 1-48 hours followed by quenching into hot water. Microstructure was characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and SEM revealed that the microstructure in the as-cast condition consists of primary dendritic α-Al, acicular-plate and globular forms of eutectic Si and intermetallic phases including globular Al2Cu and a flake-shape Al5FeSi. By T6 aging hardening, some intermetallics were dissolved and spheroidized. The volume fraction of eutectic phases in the as-cast, solution-treated, and solution-treated plus aging at 170°C for 24 hours is 17%, 12% and 10%, respectively. TEM results showed that precipitates in under-aging condition at 170° C for 6 hours are in the form of disc shape with the diameter in the range of 7-20 nm. At peak aging at 170°C for 24 hours, thin-plate precipitates with about 3-10 nm in thickness and 20-100 nm in length were found, lengthening to about 30-200 nm at longer aging time. The microhardness and ultimate tensile strength were increased from 71 HV0.05 and 227 MPa in the as-cast condition up to 140 HV0.05 and 400 MPa after solution treatment plus aging at 170°C for 24 hours, and decreased at prolong aging time.
