Master athletes are often considered exemplars of successful aging, thanks to their capacity to maintain a high sports performance during their entire life. A high training capacity, regular participation in sporting competitions, and delayed alterations in body composition and physiological capacities have been listed among the main factors contributing to impressive master athletes’ performances. However, there is a paucity of data on the metabolism and dietary habits of master athletes, and the question of whether they need to adapt their nutrition to the aging process remains open. Herein, the authors presented a contemporary overview of the metabolic challenges associated with aging, including the risk of low energy availability, anabolic resistance, and periods of metabolic crisis due to forced immobilization. After assembling scientific evidence to show that master athletes must adapt their dietary intake, the authors proposed a summary of nutritional recommendations for master athletes and suggested the next stage of research.

Master athletes are genuine examples of successful ageing thanks to their capacity of maintaining a high level of sports performance during their entire life. Within the last decade many studies have focused on the evolution of performance in many sports with ageing, as well as on the training modalities to reach such performance. On the contrary, there is a paucity of data on the nutritional habits of master athletes and the question of whether they need to adapt their nutrition to the ageing process remains unsolved. This is within this context of the optimisation of nutrition for master athletes that this review stands. The aim is to identify the potential nutritional challenges encountered by master athletes and how to handle them through adapted nutritional strategies. Given the lack of data specific to master athletes, studies including master athletes are considered as a priority, though we also make inferences based on nutrition for young adults and perturbations induced by ageing in non-athletic populations. The first part of this opinion paper tackles the first challenge faced by master athletes which is the gradual reduction in energy intake with ageing. The second challenge is the anabolic resistance and the need for increased protein intake. The third nutritional challenge we present is the episodes of metabolic crisis master athletes may face throughout life. Finally, we gather the main nutritional recommendations for master athletes and suggest the next stage of research.

Dietary habits are a major determinant of the risk of chronic disease, particularly metabolic and endocrine disorders. Fish as a food group are a unique source of nutrients with metabolic and hormonal importance including omega-3 fatty acids, iodine, selenium, vitamin D, taurine and carnitine. Fish are also a source of high quality protein and have in general low caloric density. The impact of these nutrients on cardiovascular risk has been extensively reviewed, but the impact of fish on the broader field of endocrine and metabolic health is sometimes not sufficiently appreciated. This article aimed to summarize the impact the effect of regular fish consumption on conditions like the metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome and the menopausal transition, which are in and of themselves significant causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The review revealed that scientific evidence from food science, translational research, epidemiologic studies and interventional trials shows that regular fish consumption has a positive impact on thyroid homeostasis, facilitates maintenance of a healthy body weight, reduces the magnitude of age-associated increases in blood pressure, improves glucose homeostasis helping prevent diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, and has a positive impact on muscle mass preservation among the elderly. These effects are mediated by multiple mechanisms, only some of which have been identified. For most of these effects it holds true that the potential benefits are more substantial when baseline fish consumption is low.

AbstractObjectiveIn Ireland, the major causes of death are CVD. The current Irish healthy eating guidelines and food pyramid primarily advocate a low-fat diet. However, there is overwhelming scientific evidence for the benefits of a Mediterranean diet (Med Diet) in the prevention and management of metabolic disease as well as improving overall health and well-being. In the current commentary, the rationale to incorporate the principles of the Med Diet into the Irish dietary guidelines is presented.DesignPerspectives of authors.SettingLocal and international.SubjectsPopulations in Europe, North America and Australia.ResultsAdopting components of the Med Diet presents a more evidence-based approach to updating the current Irish dietary guidelines. Experience and lessons from other non-Mediterranean countries show that it could be a feasible and effective solution to improving the dietary habits of the Irish population to prevent and mange chronic diseases.ConclusionsPolicies and programmes to address perceived barriers to the Med Diet’s implementation and uptake in non-Mediterranean countries should be promoted.

Objetiva-se identificar evidências científicas sobre a qualidade de vida em pacientes diagnosticados com insuficiênciacardíaca. Revisão integrativa realizada nas bases de dados Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde(LILACS), Base de Dados de Enfermagem (BDENF) e Sistema Online de Busca e Análise de Literatura Médica (MEDLINE)com a seguinte questão norteadora: Como a insuficiência cardíaca interfere na qualidade de vida dos pacientescardiológicos? Foi utilizada a estratégia PICO com recorte temporal de 2011 a 2016, nos idiomas português, inglês eespanhol. As informações foram tabuladas em programa Microsoft Excel® e processadas a partir de estratégia: médiaaritmética descritiva simples, frequência absoluta e relativa. Encontrou-se 712 artigos na sua totalidade, após aplicaçãodos critérios de inclusão e exclusão foram selecionados 17 artigos científicos avaliados a partir da categoria: os principaisfatores que comprometem a qualidade de vida dos pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca. Conclui-se que os pacientes cominsuficiência cardíaca apresentam intolerância à realização de atividades físicas e têm seu sono prejudicado por conta dadispneia e fadiga, sintomas que contribuem para o declínio da qualidade de vida.Palavras-chave: Insuficiência Cardíaca; Qualidade de Vida; Enfermagem. CrossFit® is a high-intensity functional training method consisting of daily workouts called “workouts of the day.” No nutritional recommendations exist for CrossFit® that are supported by scientific evidence regarding the energetic demands of this type of activity or dietary and supplement interventions. This systematic review performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines aimed to identify studies that determined (a) the physiological and metabolic demands of CrossFit® and (b) the effects of nutritional strategies on CrossFit® performance to guide nutritional recommendations for optimal recovery, adaptations, and performance for CrossFit® athletes and direct future research in this emerging area. Three databases were searched for studies that investigated physiological responses to CrossFit® and dietary or supplementation interventions on CrossFit® performance. Various physiological measures revealed the intense nature of all CrossFit® workouts of the day, reflected in substantial muscle fatigue and damage. Dietary and supplementation studies provided an unclear insight into effective strategies to improve performance and enhance adaptations and recovery due to methodological shortcomings across studies. This systematic review showed that CrossFit® is a high-intensity sport with fairly homogenous anaerobic and aerobic characteristics, resulting in substantial metabolic stress, leading to metabolite accumulation (e.g., lactate and hydrogen ions) and increased markers of muscle damage and muscle fatigue. Limited interventional data exist on dietary and supplementation strategies to optimize CrossFit® performance, and most are moderate to very low quality with some critical methodological limitations, precluding solid conclusions on their efficacy. High-quality work is needed to confirm the ideal dietary and supplemental strategies for optimal performance and recovery for CrossFit® athletes and is an exciting avenue for further research.

Background: Mental illness is one of the fastest rising threats to public health, of which depression and anxiety disorders are increasing the most. Research shows that diet is associated with depressive symptoms or depression (depression). Aim: This study aimed to investigate the diets impact on depression, by reviewing the scientific evidence for prevention and treatment interventions. Method: A systematic review was conducted, and narrative synthesis analysis was performed. Result: Twenty scientific articles were included in this review. The result showed that high adherence to dietary recommendations; avoiding processed foods; intake of anti-inflammatory diet; magnesium and folic acid; various fatty acids; and fish consumption had a depression. Public health professionals that work to support and motivate healthy eating habits may help prevent and treat depression based on the evidence presented in the results of this study. Further research is needed to strengthen a causal relationship and define evidence-based strategies to implement in prevention and treatment by public healthcare.

Abstract Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the differences between the consumption of plant-based v. animal-based protein-rich diets on successful ageing, as well as to identify the optimal combination of dietary protein intake for facilitating successful ageing in people aged >50 years. Design: A combined analysis was conducted in older adults of the ATTICA and MEDIS population-based cross-sectional studies. Anthropometrical, clinical and sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle parameters, dietary habits and level of protein intake were derived through standard procedures. Successful ageing was evaluated using the validated Successful Aging Index (SAI) composed of ten health-related social, lifestyle and clinical characteristics. Setting: Athens area and twenty Greek islands. Participants: A total of 3349 Greek women and men over 50 years old. Results: Participants with high consumption of plant proteins were more likely to be male, physically active, with higher daily energy intake, higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet and higher level of SAI (P < 0·001). Participants with ‘Low animal & High plant’ and ‘High animal & High plant’ protein consumption had a 6 and 7 % higher SAI score, respectively, compared with the other participants (P < 0·001). In contrast, ‘Low animal & Low plant’ and ‘High animal & Low plant’ protein intake was negatively associated with SAI as compared to the combination of all other consumption categories (P < 0·02). Conclusions: The consumption of a plant-based protein-rich diet seems to be a beneficial nutritional choice that should be promoted and encouraged to older people since it may benefit both individual’s health and prolong successful ageing.

Strategies for disease prevention can have a major impact on people's health. However, major gaps exist in our knowledge with regard to nutritional adequacy, nutrient-disease interactions, nutrient-gene interactions, and effective strategies for implementation of dietary recommendations which have the potential to decrease the disease burden and to contribute to successful aging of the population. Coronary heart disease is one of the major causes of mortality in the world. We have sound evidence that high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) are associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease. Lipoprotein concentrations are associated with environmental variables such as diet and lifestyle, but genetics also play a significant role. We have examined polymorphisms at candidate loci to determine their usefulness as markers for dietary responses. A G/A polymorphism 75 bp upstream from the gene encoding apolipoprotein AI (APOA1) has been described in ~ 30% of the population. Our studies show that this polymorphism is associated with variability in the HDL-C response to dietary fat, specifically to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the diet. Carriers of the A allele respond to increases in dietary PUFA with elevations in HDL-C levels, probably due to altered interactions of transcription factors with the mutated promoter. Therefore carriers of the A allele can potentially decrease their atherogenic risk by consuming high-PUFA diets. Likewise, we have examined the interaction between other dietary habits, such as alcohol drinking, and variability at the APOE locus, and have demonstrated that the classical associations between APOE polymorphism and LDL-C levels are observed primarily in those subjects who consume alcohol. Moreover, we have found a subgroup of the population, APOE4 carriers, for whom drinking alcohol may exert detrimental effects on lipid metabolism. This knowledge will contribute towards the development of more effective personalized dietary recommendations.

Typical woven fabrics for bedding were selected from the market in this paper. Based on test and analysis results of the structural parameters, the relevant performance indicators were measured in consideration of mechanical properties,comfort and style of fabrics, and the test data were systematically integrated and the relevant quantitative data were ultimately obtained. Meanwhile, Fabric Assurance Tester was used to determine the style of the fabrics and tested indicators were chosen, following with normalized statistics and processing. In addition, SPSS software was applied for the correlation analysis between fabric properties and structural parameters through the correlation and partial correlation analysis.According to the results of correlation coefficient,partial correlation coefficient, the paper revealed the intrinsic link between the fabric’s structural parameters and its properties. As to the main factors of the structural parameters which greatly affect the performance of the fabrics, they will provide scientific evidence for the design and development of fabric.

AbstractThe workload of emergency nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic includes mental and physical stress. They must always be ready to deal with patients who come with uncertain symptoms. The workload of emergency nurses is important to study to minimize the negative impact of excessive workload. The impact include fatigue, stress, and anxiety. This study aimed to determine the workload of emergency nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic based on the available literature. This study used the Narrative review method. The databases used to search articles were PubMed, and Clinicalkey for Nursing. Articles were selected based on their suitability with the keywords “Workload” OR “Workloads” AND “Emergency Nurse” OR “Emergency room” AND “COVID-19” OR “SARS-CoV-19” and the inclusion and exclusion criteria that had been determined. The search results obtained 6 articles. The results of this study showed that the workload Emergency nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic was in the moderate category with results of 68.36 ± 15.86 obtained from 2 articles, and obtained a range of 20-43 from 1 article. There are the same findings from the 3 articles; fear of being infected with a virus, high pressure, and new challenges during the pandemic. These could be the main factors that affect the work of nurses. The findings of the workload of emergency nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic are obtained from valid scientific evidence. Therefore, this study can be used ass a reference in research. Database yang digunakan untuk pencarian artikel adalah PubMed, dan Clinicalkey for Nursing. Artikel diseleksi berdasarkan kesesuaian dengan kata kunci “Workload” OR “Workloads” AND “Emergency Nurse” OR “Emergency room” AND “COVID-19” OR “SARS-CoV-19” serta kriteria inklusi dan eksklusi yang telah ditentukan. Hasil penelusuran didapatkan sebanyak 6 artikel. Hasil dari penelitian ini didapatkan beban kerja perawat gawat darurat dimasa pandemi COVID-19 ter masuk dalam kategori sedang dengan hasil 68,36 ± 15,86 yang didapatkan dari 2 artikel, dan didapatkan range 20-43 dari 1 artikel. Terdapat temuan yang sama dari ke-3 artikel ; takut terinfeksi virus, tekanan tinggi, dan tantangan baru dimasa pandemi yang dapat menjadi faktor pengaruh utama yang mempengaruhi kerja perawat. Temuan beban kerja perawat gawat darurat dimasa pandemi COVID-19 ini didapatkan dari bukti ilmiah yang valid sehingga dapat dijadikan referensi referensi dalam penelitian.
