The purpose of this quasi-experimental, phenomenological study was to use embodied cognition in understanding learning experiences in skill development and performativity (e.g., storytelling and emotional expression) among 17 beginners in aerial practice ( Mage = 20.59 ± 1.37 years old). Eight people were in the treatment-group class (skill development and performativity) and nine individuals participated in the control-group class (only skill development). Four themes emerged from the analysis: linking other exercises to aerial (e.g., cheerleading, dancing, and gymnastics) and uniqueness of aerial (e.g., artistic aspect while in the air); success in meeting aerial goals (at the posttest, performativity was valued more in the treatment group than the control group); exercise changes due to aerial, such as enhanced upper-body strengthening activities and stretches; and lessons learned, including importance of conditioning and small class size, switching Teaching Assistants (TAs), and silk awareness. Practitioners in community-based movement education programs like dancing and physical theater should recognize the need for embodied knowledge by emphasizing not only skill development but also performativity for enhanced learning experiences within supportive class settings. Although adding performative qualities to skill learning is more challenging than skill development alone, it can lead to enhanced performance, joy, and meaning of movement.

Formative assessment generates feedback on students’ performance, therebyaccelerating and improving student learning. Anecdotal evidence gathered by anumber of evaluations has hypothesised that audio feedback may be capable ofenhancing student learning more than other approaches. In this paper we report onthe preliminary findings of a quasi-experimental study employing qualitativetechniques for triangulation, conducted to evaluate the efficacy of formative audiofeedback on student learning. We focus on the delivery of ‘voice emails’ toundergraduate students (n = 24) and evaluate the efficacy of such feedback informative assessment and ergo students’ learning, as well as achieving a betterunderstanding of students’ feedback behaviour post-delivery. The results indicatethat audio feedback better conforms to existing models of ‘quality’ formativefeedback, can enhance the student learning experience and can be more efficientin feedback delivery. Despite this, and high levels of feedback re-use by studentparticipants, the audio treatment group underperformed in learning tasks whencompared with the control group. Differences between the groups were notstatistically significant and analyses of individual and mean learning gains acrossthe treatment group provide little indication of improvements in learning.

Background: The first labor anxiety is an unpleasant psychological condition due to physiological changes that cause psychological instability. The condition of excessive anxiety, worry, fear without cause, and stress, causes the muscles of the body to tense up, especially the muscles in the birth path to become stiff and hard, making it difficult to expand. This study analyzed the effect of pregnancy exercise on third trimester primigravida anxiety in dealing with childbirth. Methods: Quasi experimental design with nonrandomized pretest-postest control group. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with 34 research subjects. 17 people for the treatment group were given pregnancy exercise 8 times, and 17 people for the control group were given health education about preparation for childbirth. Results: The results of data analysis using the Wilcoxon signed rank test showed that the average reduction in the treatment group was 8.00 and the control group was 3.00. The effect of pregnancy exercise on third trimester primigravida anxiety in the treatment group with a p-value (0.000) <(0.05), while the control group with a p-value (0.180)> (0.05). Conclusion: There is an effect of pregnancy exercise on third trimester primigravida anxiety in dealing with childbirth in the Wuryantoro Health Center work area.

This paper reports the results of a quasi-experimental effects-of-instruction study examining the efficacy of applying a Cognitive Linguistic (CL) approach to L2 learning of the semantics of English modals. In spite of their frequency in typical input, modal verbs present L2 learners with difficulties, party due to their inherent complexity — modals typically have two divergent senses — a root1 sense and an epistemic sense. ELT textbooks and most grammar books aimed at L2 teachers present the two meanings as homophones, failing to address any systematic semantic patterning in the modal system as a whole. Additionally, ELT texts tend to present modals from a speech act perspective. In contrast, CL analyses (e. g., Langacker 1991; Nuyts 2001; Sweetser 1990; Talmy 1988) offer both a systematic, motivated representation of the relationship between the root and epistemic meanings and a rather precise representation of the semantics of each modal. To test the pedagogical effectiveness of a CL account of modals, an effects-of-instruction study was conducted with three groups of adult, high-intermediate ESL learners: a Cognitive treatment group, a Speech Acts2 treatment group, and a Control group. Results of an ANCOVA indicated that the Cognitive treatment group demonstrated significantly more improvement than the Speech Acts treatment group. The experiment thus lends empirical support for the position that CL, in addition to offering a compelling analytical account of language, may also provide the basis for more effective grammar instruction than that found in most current ELT teaching materials.

We sought to determine whether receiving major re-selection (MRS) advising benefits undergraduate students' grade-point averages (GPAs). We used a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design to compare a treatment group (n = 219) of undergraduates who changed their majors after receiving MRS advising with a control group (n = 206) who changed majors without advising during the same semester as the treatment group. Findings showed that, on average, students who received MRS experienced no change in their program GPA but an increase in their semester GPA; however, the control group experienced a decrease in program and semester GPAs. Multiple regression analysis confirmed that MRS advising had a positive effect on posttest semester GPAs (β = .33, p < .001) and program GPAs (β = .28, p < .001). Implications for student advising are discussed.

PurposeA recent paper by Morris et al. (2013b) presented evidence that students can develop entrepreneurial competencies through international fieldwork. This paper explores whether the same results can be developed in a traditional classroom setting.Design/methodology/approachThe study is a systematic replication of the Morris study with the addition of a matched pair, quasi-experimental design, with a self-replication. Data were collected on 13 self-reported competencies at the start of a semester from two groups using the Morris instrument. The treatment group was exposed to a curriculum designed to teach entrepreneurial competencies, and both groups were re-surveyed at the end of the semester. The process was then repeated with a different cohort, one year later, to replicate the initial study.FindingsFive competencies saw significant increases in the first treatment group. However, only three of these competencies increased more in the treatment group than the control group. In the replication study, only one competency was significantly higher in the treatment group, and that competency was not one of the original three.Practical implicationsEducators and policymakers should select a curriculum that is valid and reliable. Entrepreneurship educators and policymaker should devote more time to evaluating the effectiveness of different pedagogical techniques for improving entrepreneurial competencies.Originality/valueTo the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first studies in entrepreneurship education to undertake a matched pair, quasi-experimental design with an in-study replication. The results indicate that serious inferential errors arise if simpler designs are used, even though such designs are the norm in entrepreneurship research.

This article reports a quasi-experimental study of how error labeling in remediation exercises affects students’ writing performance. Students in five sections of a course in written business communication composed the control group, whereas students in two sections composed the treatment group. On the first letter each group wrote early in the semester—before the treatment group began error labeling in remediation exercises—no significant differences were found in the writing performance of both groups. However, on their last letter written late in the semester, studentsin the treatment group significantly reduced the number of sentence-level errors they made, compared to students in the control group. The improved writing performance of the treatment group is attributed to error labeling in conjunction with error correction in the remediation exercises.

Abstract: The inadequate, slow production of breast milk makes mothers unable to provide enough breast milk to their babies. Besides the prolactin hormone, the lactation process also depends on oxytocin hormone which is secreted from the posterior hypophysis as a reaction on nipple suckling. Rolling massage is one of the relaxation therapy which aims to stimulate the central nerve on posterior and anterior hypophysis, so the breast milk production can be increased, particularly in the postpartum mothers, and comfort and relaxation after childbirth can be provided. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of breast milk production in the postpartum mothers with massage rolling (back) in Sri Sukeni Community Empowerment Agency, Sleman. The methodology in this research is Quasi-Experimental Design with two-group posttest design. The control group is postpartum mothers without massage rolling and the treatment group is postpartum mother treated with the massage rolling. Data analysis used the independent t-test and the paired sample t-test. The research shows the result that in samples of t-test, there is a meaningful difference (p = 0.023<) in breast milk production (weight of baby) between control group (2,687.07 ± 160.155) and treatment group (2,846.13 ± 198.968). This difference is shown in the average weight of baby in treatment group which is higher compared with the control group. Massage rolling affects breast milk production in Sri Sukeni Community Empowerment Agency, Sleman in 2017.
