This study used Palmer’s (1986) theory to analyzed Modality and Halliday (2008) to analyze the meaning of modality. Relating to the statements above, this study was proposed to answer two articulated research problems, namely; (1) what are the types of modality found in Emma Watson and Michael Kimmel’s Speech Texts? And (2) To what extent do Emma Watson and Michael Kimmel’s Speech Texts show similarities and differences, if any, in their use of types of modality? This study employs a descriptive qualitative design. The data were all of the speech by Emma Watson and Michael Kimmel’s Speech Texts that contain modality. In terms of types of modality, 30 data of modality were found. The data are classified into two types of modality: Epistemic modality consists of 10 data; judgments (5 data) and modifications (5 data). Deontic modality consists of 20 data; directives (3 data), modifications (4 data), subjectivity (5 data), imperatives (3 data), commissives (2 data), and volitives (3 data). Moreover, in terms of similarities and differences, the data are classified into two terms similarities and differences. We found 11 data of similarities and differences in types of modality: In terms of similarities in types of epistemic modality (3 data) and similarities in types of deontic modality (2 data). In terms of differences in epistemic modality (2 data) and differences in deontic modality (4 data). Keywords: Modality, Epistemic, and Deontic

<p>This study investigated the marriage has human values to fulfill the instincts of human life. In the community of Tobati tribes, marriage has been arranged based on its customary traditions that have been agreed upon for generations. It focused on exploring the form of the marriage tradition of the repentant tribal people and how Islamic law analyzes the similarities and differences. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative design to explore the objectives of this study then analyzed by Miles Huberman’s theory. The findings show that there are several steps in the marriage process, namely: <em>first</em>, propose (ask in marriage); <em>second</em>, waiting for a period (waiting for a decision from the woman’s family); <em>third</em>, giving the application, and the last, the procession of the marriage. These four stages, there are similar to the stages of marriage according to Islamic law, but there is a very significant difference, namely the obligation to deliver the application after obtaining approval to carry out the wedding procession.</p>

<p><em>This study aims to describe the intertextuality relationship between the novel Pasung Jiwa by Okky Madasari and Calabai by Pepi Al-Bayqunie. The type of research is descriptive qualitative approach using content analysis. Data are collected by inventorying events that are similarities and differences, specifications on the characters, settings, plots, and themes of both text. The research results indicate that there are similar themes on the two novels, the theme of self actualization in addition with the theme of family and friendship. The same characterization are also used by both author, masculine figures with feminine soul characters. The difference between the two novels lies on the plot and setting. Pasung Jiwa uses progressive plot and Calabai uses a flash-back plot.. Okky Madasari takes Java Island as the background in the novel Pasung Jiwa, while the novel Calabai, Pepi Al-Bayqunie using the setting of Sulawesi Island. The basis of the similarity of theme and characterization supported by the similirity of events in the story shows the existence of intertextual relationship between the two novels. As a previously published work, the novel Pasung Jiwa by Okky Madasari is a hipogram and novel Calabai by Pepi A-Bayqunie as a transformational text. On the theme and characterization, the transformation of Calabai forward the hypogram, while in the plot and setting deviates his hypogram, Pasung Jiwa.</em></p><p>Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan hubungan intertekstualitas antara novel Pasung Jiwa karya Okky Madasari dan novel Calabai karya Pepi Al-Bayqunie. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan konten analisis. Data dikumpulkan dengan menginventariskan peristiwa yang merupakan persamaan dan perbedaan, spesifikasi pada tokoh, latar, alur, dan tema dari kedua teks. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat kesamaan tema pada kedua novel, yaitu tema aktualisasi diri, ditambah dengan tema keluarga dan persahabatan. Penokohan yang sama juga digunakan oleh kedua penulis, yaitu tokoh maskulin dengan karakter jiwa feminin. Perbedaan kedua novel terletak pada alur dan latar. Pasung Jiwa menggunakan alur maju dan Calabai menggunakan alur campuran. Latar dalam novel Pasung Jiwa, Okky Madasari mengambil latar Pulau Jawa, sedangkan novel Calabai, Pepi Al-Bayqunie menggunakan latar Pulau Sulawesi. Dasar kesamaan tema dan penokohan didukung kesamaan peristiwa-peristiwa dalam cerita menunjukkan adanya hubungan intertekstual antara kedua novel. Sebagai karya yang terbit terlebih dahulu menjadikan novel Pasung Jiwa karya Okky Madasari adalah hipogram dan novel Calabai karya Pepi Al-Bayqunie sebagai teks transformasi. Pada tema dan penokohan, transformasi Calabai meneruskan hipogram, sedangkan pada alur dan latar menyimpangi hipogramnya, Pasung Jiwa.</p>

Novel is a literary work which is also known as fiction. Therefore, the notion of fiction also applies to the novel, which is a result of dialogue, contemplation, and the author's reaction to the environment and life. Each writer has a message that is implied in each of his works, one of which is as a distributor of da'wah messages. In this study, the researcher chose the novel Hati Suhita by Khilma Anis compared to the novel Dua Barista by Najhati Sharma. Because these two novels are the work of writers who were born in Islamic boarding schools. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The results of this study indicate that there are similarities and differences in the message of da'wah in the novel Hati Suhita by Khilma Anis and the novel Dua Barista by Najhati Sharma.

Writing skill is one of the skills that is difficult to learn because we have to know the correct sentence composition and also what we hear must be in accordance with what we write and therefore this skill is very important to learn. The objective of the research is to identify the sudents’ responses toward think talk write (TTW) strategy in teacihng writing skill. The research used descriptive qualitative design. The respondents of this research were eighth grade students of SMP Pasundan 1 Cimahi. The instrument of this research was questionnaire. The result of data analysis shows that students gave positive responses toward TTW strategy. The respondents agree that TTW strategy can increase students’ motivation, TTW Strategy can help students in improving their writing skill and TTW strategy can make teaching and learning process interesting. Keywords:  Writing, Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy, Student’s Responses

Indonesia was well known for the variety of tribes, traditional languages, society and culture. It triggered to conduct this research that concerned to social stratification and Karonese register in giving pedah pedah perjabun. The problem of this research was how far the Karonese register change in this modern era or whether there were any differences among society group in Karonese traditional wedding ceremony. Based on this problem, this research aimed to 1) investigate the types of social stratification in traditional wedding ceremony of Karonese, 2) describe the reflections of social stratification toward the Karonese register, and 3) explain Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were taken from Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony and the source of data was Karonese native speaker who involved in traditional wedding ceremony. This research showed that 1) the interaction of Karonese society in traditional wedding ceremony stratifies Karonese people into four divisions. They are kalimbubu and anak beru that categorized as closed social stratification and sembuyak and teman meriah that categorized as opened social stratification, 2) social stratification were reflected through the differences and similarity form of register .Kallimbubu and anakberu used formal register as the most dominant regiser while sembuyak and anak beru  used consultative register as the most dominant, and 3) the cause of Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony was caused by register with reference to field that covered factor of arena and register with reference to tenor that cover formality and status. Keywords: Karonese Register, Pedah Pedah Perjabun; Social Stratification

Generally, blending can be defined as combining two clipped words. Kvetko in Bednarova defines blending as a word formation process similar to shortening combined with merging two different words. There are many types of blending words both in Indonesian and English context. Therefore, the aim of this research is to analyze the comparison between Indonesian blend words and English blend words in terms of its types, its similarities and differences and also how its formed. In this paper the researcher use descriptive qualitative method as the method of the research. The source of the data is taken from some journal articles that relevant with blend words both in Indonesian and English context. The result showed that Indonesian blend words and English blend words not only have similarities in the forming word, but also have their differences that make them unique to each other. The writer hopes that the reader of this article gets more information about both Indonesian and English blend words based on its types and the similarities and the difference between them.

The aim of this paper is to report the observation findings of foreign language beliefs and behaviors among three communities of English speaking communities’ specific of their cultural identity. The study used descriptive qualitative design since the author wants to describe the phenomenon happened in this study. Three English speaking communities were taken as the data; first, Krismit whatsApp group conversation; second, a private whatsApp conversation between two non-native speakers; third, a classroom talk. Those data were taken from the author’s cellphone, then the chats were exported, transcribed and analyzed well through their beliefs and behaviors specific of their cultural identity. The findings of the present study indicate that the awareness of using English pattern in two communities needs to be more highlighted, while the other community revealed the cultural matter in the form of expressions. Therefore, teachers’ and educators’ big effort in decreasing this issue is crucially needed.

In this research, the researcher was focusing on the psychological conflict and the character development in which it could be found in the character of Elsa in Frozen. There were two theories that the researcher used for the research problems in this research. The first theory that the researcher used to answer the first research problem was about the psychological conflict that was proposed by Kurt Lewin to find variety of psychological conflict that was expressed by the character of Elsa in the story itself. As for the second theory that the researcher used to answer the second research problem was about the personality development which was proposed by Elizabeth B. Hurlock to explain the effect of psychological conflict to Elsa personality development. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The result of this analysis showed that there were two kinds of psychological conflict which was shown in Elsa character which were approach-avoidance conflict and avoidance-avoidance conflict and those two conflicts which gave a huge effect to Elsa personality development in which the researcher found that there are five determinants they are emotional, aspiration and achievement, intellectual, social, and family.

Literary works are never separated from previous works or other texts. “Aku Dipenogoro!” is a literary work in the form of a drama script written by Landung Simatupang which was inspired by the power of divination by Peter Carey. The process of forming a literary work based on the acceptance of the past works can be said to be a reception. Therefore, this study used a reception approach to see how far the acceptance of previous works in Aku Dipenogoro!. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative. In this case, the researcher compares the texts by looking at the similarities and differences. Furthermore, the findings are described. Based on the results of the analysis conducted by Aku Dipenogoro! as a literary work made several changes from the previous work (Peter Carey's Power of Prediction). These changes are used to give a dramatic effect in the work. Improvisation is used to get certain effects and aesthetics in a work. As a drama script Aku Dipenogoro! refers to dramatic effects in the performing arts (theater).

Nyai Ontosoroh is a character in Pramudya Ananta Toer's novel Bumi Manusia, which depicts a woman's struggle against injustice in her life. R. Giryadi adapted Nyai Ontosoroh's struggle in this novel into a short drama titled "Nyai Ontosoroh." The plot of this drama revolves around Nyai Ontosoroh's opposition to her husband and the Dutch government, which wants to take over the company and custody of her child. A Javanese woman's resistance to the colonial government was courageous at the time. Despite being defeated, Nyai Ontosoroh had fought for his rights in a dignified manner. She deserved to be referred to as a "hero." The purpose of this study is to explain and describe the various forms of gender injustice against women in R. Giryadi's drama script "Nyai Ontosoroh." This study is descriptive qualitative in nature. It is tailored to the formulation of determined research problems. It is a qualitative study that is thoroughly and analytically described. Forms of gender injustice against women are described. The conclusion of this paper indicates that women in Indonesia continue to face numerous gender injustices. Women must fight for gender equality as they should.
