Objective: Although an anti-inflammatory effect of Phaleria macrocarpa (Mahkota Dewa in Indonesian) leaf extract has been reported, the extract shows toxicity as the dose increases. Chitosan nanoparticles are known to have transport properties that can enhance the targeting of active compounds to tissues at a lower dose. The present study sought to determine whether the extract in chitosan nanoparticles can suppress angiogenesis in the colon tissue of mice. Methods: We determined the antiangiogenic effect in 6 groups Swiss Webster mice: normal (N) group, negative control (NC) administered drinking water containing DSS 2% w/v (7 d) and followed by water without DSS (7 d) in 3 cycles, 12.5 and 25 mg leaf extract of P. macrocarpa/mouse (EPM 12.5 and EPM 25) groups, and 6.25 and 12.5 mg leaf extract of P. macrocarpa in chitosan nanoparticles/mouse (NPPM 6.25 and NPPM 12.5) groups. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained samples was performed to determine the amount of angiogenesis in the colon tissue. Results: The angiogenesis in the NPPM 12.5 (p = 0.105) and EPM 25 (p = 0.07) groups was not significantly different to that in the negative control group (administered DSS alone). By contrast, angiogenesis in the EPM 12.5 (p = 0.03) and NPPM 6.25 (p = 0.02) groups was significantly less than that in the DSS group. Conclusion: Angiogenesis in the colon tissue of mice was reduced by the extract with or without chitosan nanoparticles. The greatest reduction was found for the 12.5 mg/mouse dose of P. macrocarpa leaf extract in chitosan nanoparticles.

Objective: The incidence of small intestine cancer (SIC) is rising despite available preventive measures. Kaempferol and quercetin are a potential chemopreventive agent for SIC, but in vivo findings are inconclusive. We aim to study the effects of kaempferol and quercetin on colitis-associated small intestine carcinogenesis in mice.Methods: Suppression effect was tested using mice divided into 6 groups of treatment, i.e.; normal (N) group, negative control (NC), leaf extract (medium dose [MD]) dose 12.5 and 25 mg/kg body weight (BW), leaf extract chitosan and nanoparticle of mahkota dewa (NPMD) dose 6.25 and 12.5 mg/kg BW. Dextran sulfate sodium induction of 1% w/v was administered through drinking water for 6 weeks of treatment. The suppression effect was observed histopathologically by counting the mitotic cells and hyperplasia cells of the crypt of small intestine with hematoxylin-eosin staining.Results: Mitosis cells mean of NC group was not significant difference either with MD 12.5 (p=0.394) or MD 6.5 (p=0.310). However, mitosis cell mean appears to be lower in the NPMD 12.5 (p=0.09) and NPMD 6.25 (p=0.05) groups than the NC group. There was a significant difference among the mean of hyperplasia NC group and MD and also NPMD group. Significant difference also can be showed between MD 12.5 and MD 25 (p=0.026), and between NPMD 6.25 and NPMD 12.5 (p=0.002), and between MD 12.5 and NPMD 12.5 (p=0.002).Conclusion: Our results demonstrate suppression of hyperplasia small intestine by either nanoparticle or extract of Phaleria macrocarpa extracts. The suppression of mitosis was showed by administration of nanoparticle.

Background: Peperomia pellucida L'HBK or known as messengers in the Indonesian plant is a herbaceous plant that belongs to the family Piperaceae. This study aimed to determine the effect of the stem and leaf extract cream messengers to the healing process of burns in rats (Rattus norvegicus. Methods: This was an experimental study using a completely randomized design. Test animals were divided into three groups, each - each group consisted of 3 rats. The first group is the negative control group (distilled water), the second group is a positive control group (Bioplacenton®), the third group is the group treated stem and leaf extract cream errand. The diameter of the wound and fibroblasts observed histopathology and is used as an indicator of the healing process of burns. The burns were treated and observed the healing effect for 20 days. Data were analyzed statistically wound diameter using ANOVA followed by LSD test. Results: The results showed the cream extracts of stems and leaves telling effect on the healing process of burns on rats. Conclusion: The results also showed that the treatment group and the leaf stem extract cream messengers and control groups positively influence the healing process of burns significantly when compared to the negative control group. Meanwhile, the treatment group stem and leaf extract cream messengers have no preformance difference influence the healing process of burns a significant positive control group

Tooth extraction is a process of removing teeth from the alveolar bone. In wound healing, fibroblast are very important cells. The main purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mobe leaf 1% and 3% extract gel (Artocarpus lakoocha) on fibroblast proliferation in post extraction tooth socket wound healing. This research used 16 samples of wistar rats, divided into 4 groups, a positive control group, a negative control group and a 1% and 3% mobe leaf extract gel group. The left mandibular incisors were extracted, then 1% and 3% gels of mobe leaf extract were applied on day 1 to day 7. Data analysis was calculated using the Kruskal-Wallis test on clinical data and one way ANOVA test for microscopic. The result of the socket wound healing activity test for a good concentration of mobe leaf extract gel was 3%. This research shows significant resultith p-value of 0.018 (< 0.05) on the closure of the socket wound clinically which means the closure of the wound accelerates because of the mobe leaf 3% extract gel treatment. The distance of fibroblast on microscopically shows significant resultith a p-value of 0.002 (< 0.05), which means that there was an enlargement of the distance fibroblast at the socket wound closure with application of mobe leaf 3% extract gel. From the results of the study it can be concluded that mobe leaf 3% extract gel has the best ability to show acceleration the closure of the socket wound either clinically or microscopically.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of neem leaf extract (Azadirachta indica) on parasitemia of rats infected with Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) Aceh local isolate. A total of 24 male rats aged three months were used in this study and randomly divided into six treatment groups equally. The negative control group (K0) without T. evansi infection and neem leaf extract, the positive control group (K1) was infected with T. evansi but no neem leaf extract given, group K2, K3, K4, and K5 were infected with 5x104 T. evansi and were given neem leaf extract after patent infection with dose of 50, 100, 400, and 800 mg/kg BW respectively. The extract was given orally for three consecutive days. On the fourth day, rat blood was drawn for parasitemia examination. The results showed that no T. evansi detected in rats in negative control group (K0), while parasitemia in group K1; K2; K3; K4; and K5 was 12,295 x106/mL; 10,495 x106/mL; 9,360 x106/mL; 5,080x106/mL; and 2,398x106/mL of blood, respectively. Percentage of inhibition of parasitemia in K2, K3, K4, and K5 reached 14.64, 23.78, 58.68, and 80.50%, respectively. Based on the result of the study, neem leaf extract of 800 mg/kg BW gave the highest reduction of parasitemia in rats infected with T. evansi.

Abstract: High blood cholesterol is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis. Gedi plants contain polyphenolic compounds that can lowering blood cholesterol levels. This study aimed to find out the effect of gedi (Abelmoschus manihot L) leaves extract on histopatologic features of aorta of those wistar rats, which had been administered an atherogenic diet. This was an experimental study on animal using 20 Wistar rats as samples. The rats were divided into 4 different groups, 5 rats for each group. Negative control group was fed only pelet, positive control group was fed pork fat as much as 2 ml/day, group C was fed on pork fat and gedi leaf extract, and group D was fed on pork fat then continued with gedi leaf extract. The results indicated that administration of 30 mg gedi leaf extract showed a histopathologic feature which is decreasing of foam cells. Conclusion: Microscopically, aorta of those rats fed on pork lard diet showed a number of foam cells in tunica intima and media whereas the rats that were fed on pork lard along with gedi leaf extract, generally there were no foam cells, but there aresome parts which contain few foam cells. On the group of Wistar rats which were fed on pork lard, continued with gedi leaf extract showed less foam cells compared to the positive control group.Keywords: Gedi leaf extract, pork lard, foam cell.Abstrak: Kadar kolesterol darah yang tinggi merupakan faktor risiko utama terjadinya aterosklerosis. Tumbuhan gedi mengandung senyawa polifenol yang dapat menurunkan kadar kolesterol darah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pemberian ekstrak daun gedi terhadap gambaran histopatologi aorta tikus wistar dengan diet aterogenik. Hewan uji yang digunakan berupa 20 ekor tikus Wistar yang dibagi ke dalam 4 kelompok, masing-masing kelompok terdiri dari 5 ekor tikus. Kelompok kontrol negatif hanya diberikan pelet biasa, kelompok kontrol positif diberikan diet lemak babi 2ml/hari, kelompok C diberikan diet lemak babi bersamaan dengan ekstrak daun gedi, dan kelompok D diberikan lemak babi kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pemberian ekstrak daun gedi. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa pemberian ekstrak daun gedi 30 mg mampu memberikan gambaran histopatologi aorta berupa berkurangnya jumlah sel busa. Simpulan: Secara mikroskopik, aorta tikus wistar yang diberi lemak babi menunjukkan adanya penumpukan sel-sel busa pada tunika intima dan media, sedangkan pada aorta tikus wistar yang diberi lemak babi bersamaan dengan ekstrak daun gedi maupun yang dilanjutkan dengan ekstrak daun gedi ditemukan berkurangnya jumlah sel-sel busa.Kata Kunci : Ekstrak daun gedi, Lemak babi, Sel busa.

Objective: The plant mahkota dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa) is known to have anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to determine whetherchitosan nanoparticles containing mahkota dewa leaf extract would yield superior anti-inflammatory effects in the colon of a mouse model of dextransodium sulfate (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis, compared with ethanol extract alone after testing the acute toxicities (lethal dose) of both preparations.Methods: For acute toxicity testing, 10 Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 6000 mg/kg body weight (BW) of leaf extract alone or with nanoparticles.Subsequently, mice were divided into the following six groups to determine the anti-inflammatory effects: Untreated, negative control (DSS 2% w/v), leafextract at 12.5 or 25 mg/kg BW, and leaf extract in chitosan nanoparticles at 6.25 or 12.5 mg/kg BW. To induce colitis, DSS (2% w/v) was administeredthrough drinking water for 6 weeks. The anti-inflammatory effect was observed histopathologically by imaging the inflammatory cells of the mice colonwith hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining.Results: For acute toxicity testing, 10 Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 6000 mg/kg BW of leaf extract alone or with nanoparticles. Abstract The study aimed to investigate the possible anti-inflammatory activity of larch sawdust as feed supplement in lactating sows’ diet and its possible effect on the prevalence of Postpartum Dysgalactia Syndrome under field conditions. In a Greek farrow-to-finish pig farm, fifteen sows were randomly and equally allocated to a negative control group (NC group), a positive control group (PC group), and a treatment group (LT group). The animals of the first two groups received 99% basic diet and 1% corn starch, while LT group animals received 99% basic diet and 1% larch sawdust. The whole trial period lasted 35 days (7 days prior to farrow – day of weaning). At parturition day, animals of the PC group received 2 ml of an anti-inflammatory drug intramuscularly (meloxicam, Metacam®, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica), while the animals of both other groups, received 2 ml of normal saline. Results showed insignificant differences among experimental groups for parameters such as post-partum rectal temperature and piglets performance. On the contrary, a significant increase of mean milk lactation index was observed in LT and PC groups on the 4th day of lactation period, when compared with NC group (p=0.014). Additionally, mean IL-6 concentrations in blood in the LT group showed a tendency for reduction when compared with those found in NC, and insignificant difference (p>0.05) when compared with those observed in PC group 24 hours postpartum. Moreover, the respective TNFα mean level in the LT group at 24 and 72 hours after parturition was similar to that found in PC group, respectively) and significantly lower than that determined in the NC group (p=0.003, p=0.024. The results suggest a possible anti-inflammatory effect of larch sawdust in sows.

ABSTRACTMosquitoes are type of insect that acts as a disease vector. One of them is Culex sp mosquitos which their existence is many around us. In Indonesia there are still a lot of disease cases that caused by Culex sp mosquitos, one of them is filariasis disease. The efforts to control thecurrent population of Culex sp mosquitoes mostly use chemical insecticides. The control becomes difficult because of the resistance to chemical insecticides and adversely affects the environment. This study aims to determine the potential of jackfruit leaf extract as biolarvasida against Culex sp. The type of this study was post test onlycontrolled group design, using 625 larvae Culex sp instar III, divided into 5 groups (negative control group, 0.25% extract, 0.50% extract, 0.75% extract, extract and 1% extract). Observation was performed 24 hoursafter the treatment and counted the number of larvae death.The data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis test followed by Post Hoc Mann-Whitney U test to determine the killing power of leafy leaf extractusing Probit analysis. The results of data analysis in this study were thedeath rate percentage of larvae after 24 hours treatment was 0% incontrol, 44% in 0.25%extract, 52% in0.50% extract, 60% in 0.75%extract,while in the extract group of 1%, the number of larval deaths was 72%. Itobtained results with significant differencein some treatment groups thatwere concentrations of 0.25% - 1%. Probit analysis showed that LC50 wasat 0.382% concentration.From results of the studyit can be concluded that jackfruit leaf extract(Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk) was potential as Culex sp mosquitobiolarvacide. So it is necessary to conduct further research on the effectsof compounds that contained in other plant parts such as flowers, stemsand roots which will be expected to have a function asbiolarvasida.Keywords: Leaf Jackfruit, Biolarvasida, Mosquito Culex sp

Wound refers to partly damage or loss of body tissue. One way that has been used by the people in helping the process of wound healing is the use of medicinal plants, such as gotu kola (Centella asiatica). Gotu kola (Centella asiatica)  is kind of plant that found almost in all territories of Indonesia which functions as a cell revitalizing substance which quickens wound healing those are burnt, skin ulcer and to prevent keloid. This study is aimed to know the effect of giving gotu kola leaf extract (Centella Asiatica) against to the healing of the wound incision on male white rats (Rattus Norvegicus) wistar strain. This study is a pure experimental research using the randomized post test only control group design with the subjects are 30 male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar strain that were divided into 3 groups, namely K1, K2, and K3. The incision wound were made on the back of all white rat in each group with a length of ± 2 cm and a depth of ± 2 mm. The wound in the negative control group (K1) was not given any substance; in the positive control group (K2) was given povidone iodine 10%; and in the treatment group (K3) was given gotu kola leaf extract at a dose of 37,5 mg/150 grBB. The study was done for 10 days. Furthermore, wound observation and monitoring is held. Then the results were processed by using One Way ANOVA. The result study of wound incision healing on male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar strain shows that there is significant difference among the negative control group (K1), the positive control group (K2), and the treatment group (K3) on One Way ANOVA test which significant p-value are 0,027 (p < 0.05). The result of Post-Hoc LSD test also shows a significant differences among the K1 and K3 groups, and K2 and K3 groups which significant p-values are 0,011 and 0,038 (p < 0,05). From these results, it can be concluded that gotu kola leaf extract (Centella asiatica) effective on quickens wound healing of the wound incision on male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) wistar strain.

Abstract: Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory drug which can cause side effect such as damage of the gastric mucous. Soursop leaf is usually used for medical treatment because it contains flavonoid compound which has the antioxidant and anti-inflamatory activity and may protect gastric mucous from the side effects of aspirin. This study aimed to reveal the histopathological features of the gaster of wistar rats administered with soursop leaf extract after induced with aspirin. This was an experimental study using 20 Wistar rats. Rats were divided into negative control group (A) and treatment groups. Treatment groups were divided into; rats induced with aspirin 30mg for 10 days (B); rats administered with soursop leaf extract 80mg before induced with aspirin 30mg for 10 days (C); rats induced with aspirin 30mg for 10 days and administered with soursop leaf extract 80mg for the next 3 days (D); and rats induced with aspirin 30mg for 10 days and not treated for the next 3 days (E). Groups A, B and C were terminated on 11th day, meanwhile groups D and E were terminated on 14th day. The results showed normal histological features in group A. Group B showed acute gastritic features such as many PMN inflammatory cells in the mucous to serous layers, submucous edema, and capillary dilatation. Groups C and D showed many PMN inflammatory cells in the mucous to submucous layers. Group E showed decreased PMN inflammatory cells in mucous to submucous layers. Conclusion: Administration of soursop leaf extract could not decrease the acute gastritic signs such as inflammatory cells, edema and capillary dilatation in the gaster of Wistar rats induced with aspirin.Keywords: aspirin, soursop leaves, gaster. Abstrak: Aspirin merupakan obat anti inflamasi yang bisa menyebabkan efek samping gangguan mukosa lambung. Daun sirsak sering digunakan sebagai obat tradisional yang berkhasiat karena mengandung senyawa flavonoid yang berkhasiat sebagai antioksidan dan antiinflamasi yang mungkin dapat melindungi lambung dari efek samping aspirin. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran histopatologik lambung tikus Wistar yang diberikan ekstrak daun sirsak setelah induksi aspirin. Jenis penelitian ini ialah eksperimental yang menggunakan 20 ekor tikus Wistar. Hewan uji dibagi dalam kelompok kontrol negatif (A) dan kelompok perlakuan. Kelompok perlakuan dibagi atas kelompok tikus yang diberi aspirin 30mg selama 10 hari (B); tikus yang diberi ekstrak daun sirsak 80mg sebelum induksi aspirin 30mg selama 10 hari (C), tikus yang diberi aspirin 30mg selama 10 hari dan diberikan ekstrak daun sirsak 80mg selama 3 hari berikutnya (D); dan tikus yang diberi aspirin 30mg selama 10 hari dan tidak diberi perlakuan selama 3 hari berikutnya (E). Kelompok A, B dan C diterminasi pada hari ke-11, kelompok D dan E diterminasi pada hari ke-14. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan gambaran histologik lambung normal pada kelompok A. Kelompok B menunjukkan gambaran histopatologik gastritis akut yakni baanyak sel-sel radang PMN pada lapisan mukosa sampai serosa, edema submukosa, dan pelebaran pembuluh darah kapiler. Kelompok C dan D menunjukkan banyak sel-sel radang PMN pada lapisan mukosa sampai submukosa. Kelompok perlakuan E menunjukkan sel-sel radang PMN yang lebih sedikit pada lapisan mukosa sampai submukosa. Simpulan: Pemberian ekstak daun sirsak tidak dapat mengurangi tanda-tanda gastritis akut berupa sel-sel radang, edema, dan pelebaran pembuluh darah kapiler pada lambung tikus wistar yang diinduksi aspirin.
