<p><em><span>Facebook provides users comfort in communicating even though they cannot see expressions or any other nonverbal signs, which have been an essential factor in supporting face-to-face communication. Therefore, this research is necessary because the absence of nonverbal communication, especially facial expression, touching, and gesture, renders the communication process between individuals ineffective and uncomfortable, as it was when people first used email to communicate via the internet. Through the study of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) perspectives, nonverbal communication, Social Presence Theory and Lack of Social Context Cues theory, this paper will discuss forms of nonverbal communication in the digital era. This study is based on research conducted by researchers using the netnography method and carried out through literature studies. The research was conducted on the Muslim community Bening Society on Facebook because the communication between them is very intense, as required in netnography. The loss of nonverbal communication in interpersonal communication does not, in fact, reduce netizens’ comfort in communicating and interacting. The emergence of digital emoticons and nonverbals is a substitute for nonverbal communication because digital emoticon and nonverbal functions in mediated interpersonal communication are the same as nonverbal communication.</span></em></p>

Retrieved from kominfo.go.id, the Director of Information Services of International Directorate General of Public Information and Communication, Selamatta Sembiring, said that 95 % of internet users accesses social networking sites. The most accessible social networking sites are Facebook and Twitter. This research uses descriptive qualitative approach by using methods which are data collection, interview, and documentation. The interaction in interpersonal communication on Facebook tends to be similar to the daily interpersonal communication. Both of them have similar steps of daily interpersonal communication process as proposed by Devito (1997:233) which are contact, involvement, familiarity, destruction, and termination. The next development is that the connectivity among Facebook users is no longer based on known people who live far away. Facebook expands the reach of connectedness based on specific needs of humans. As shown on the early development of Facebook, that connection is expanded on university students. It can be seen from the specific need of university students that is the need of educational information. The existence of new media, especially Facebook, cannot be underestimated by public relations. It can be a chance to optimize its role and its function internally and externally or publicly. The existence of new media repositions public affairs function which tends to be closed and one-way communication to be open and two-way communication. This new situation requires public relations to have the appropriate interaction competence in the public as well as effective interpersonal communication on social media, especially Facebook.  Keywords : interpersonal communication, public information and communication,  facebook

Couchsurfing is an application that connects persons who need lodging, with individuals who offer their house as a free place to stay. Persons who need lodging are called surfers and individuals who provide their house are called hosts. When hosts and surfers are just getting acquainted through the Couchsurfing app, they hold some uncertainty with each other. This study describes the experiences of both parties in their efforts to reduce uncertainty and build close relationships, even though they only met through digital applications and never  face to face. This study uses a phenomenological approach with data search techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, direct observation, and data observation through the Couchsurfing application. The number of interviewees was 14  from various cities in Indonesia. To reduce uncertainty and build close relationships, hosts and surfers go through five stages; first, understanding and believing technology; second, pre-conversation; third, online conversation-1; fourth, face-to-face conversation; and fifth, online conversation-2. The description of these stages is summarized in the findings of this study. This finding also proves that the presence of technology may modify the previously known theories of interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication not only takes place between two people directly but also involves technology as an intermediary.

We are living in a digital era in which everybody who is not participating will be left behind. Yes, that is true. We are all chased by the rapid changes of this era, and we are running faster and faster to catch up with the latest technology. It seems as if we are all haunted to go deeper and deeper into the “tunnel of the digital era”. The same thing happens in the world of education. However, if we notice more closely, there are still some aspects that can be done directly without necessitating the use of technology. One example is student-student direct interactions. Technology can be used to facilitate peer assessments, not replace student-student interactions. One central research question to be answered in this paper is: What are male and female Indonesian students’ points of views towards peer reviews? Despite all the sophisticated technology we are all exposed to in this era, peer feedback should still be done directly with real, face-to-face communication in a classroom setting. Indirect online communication or chatting through social media may cause a misunderstanding and misinterpretation of one’s ideas. Data for this study was taken from 39 students’ opinions in their journals. They were Academic Writing class students of the English Department of UKSW Indonesia, in Semester II, 2015-2016. Most students stated that direct and interactive face-to-face communication is still needed. It proves that digitation cannot replace everything. Real communication with real peers in the real - not cyber - world can enhance successful learning. The findings also reveal that differences were found between male and female students’ reactions or perceptions towards peer reviews.

Abstract:  During the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, all communication activities have been carried out mostly through CMC, including online learning that students must experience. This situation brings big changes in the communication process between lecturers and students and vice versa. This paper aims to see how interpersonal communication changes in the online lecture process and what elements of interpersonal communication are lost with technology in online learning. The data collection method in this study was to conduct Focus Group Discussions on Sociology students at the Universitas Negeri Malang. 6 students were involved in the FGD with the criteria for students above the 2019 class who had experienced face-to-face and online lectures. Primary data was obtained through active observation of Sociology Department lecturers. This study indicates that many dimensions of interpersonal communication are missing in online lectures, such as the loss of empathy between students due to the absence of face-to-face communication and miss communication in online lectures, which causes interpersonal communication not to work effectively. Furthermore, Interpersonal communication cannot be established properly if the lecturer does not have high technological skills. It can then affect the spirit of student learning in online lectures.     Keywords: higher education, ICT skills, interpersonal communication, online learning

Generation Z is the generation that was born where internet technology already exists. The development of internet technology, especially digital social networks and wireless cellular devices, has fundamentally changed how Generation Z thinks in living life, both for communication, relationships, leadership, authority, and forming today's community. Therefore, digital social networks have profound implications for church ministry in the digital age. This study aims to propose the importance of social media as a teaching medium for Generation Z to build the spirituality of Generation Z in the digital era. The research method used in this paper is a literature study (library). Through this research study, it can be concluded that social media can be used as a sacred space and a tool to present a networked church, build and foster relationships with generation Z in the love of Christ. But real life or face-to-face with Generation Z is still important. Both virtual and real must be used in balance.
